In the mid-Ming Dynasty, the emperor could not go to the court to govern under the coercion of the cabinet and Dongchang. The eunuch group headed by Zhang Jing, the eunuch of Dongchang, and the cabinet group headed by Wang Zuo, the chief minister of the cabinet, struggled for power. Zhao Chongxi, the general manager of Jinyiwei, was caught between the two. The two factions remained neutral and insisted on being loyal to the emperor, but Jinyiwei had already been planted with many traitors by both factions. One rainy night, Zhao Chongxi was assassinated. Shi Jingyao (played by Bai Jian'en) and Di Qing (played by Yang Haoyuan), the commanders of the Beizhen Prefecture who were deeply favored by Zhao Chongxi, were late in rescuing him and were heartbroken. The emperor decreed that whoever could solve the case would be appointed as the general manager of the Jinyiwei. A battle broke out between the northern and southern town officials of Jinyiwei, but secretly between the eunuchs and the cabinet began to unfold.
