Threw the doctor off the radio tower, doctor lets him fall into castrovalva and watches him burn alive, master gets him, and so on. It's the universe basically playing tug of war with itself and never wanting it to end.

With everything that happens between the Master and the Doctor, it's easy to forget that they were friends once.

Also how have I only just realised the timelords seem to have their own name-titles. It's weird. The Doctor, The Master, if any other timelords were left they might have name titles as well.

I love how The Master was being all cocky about dying in refusing to stay with The Doctor but when he asked if the drumming would stop even after death only for The Doctor to say nothing, he was legitimately scared

I disagree. I think he refused to continue living because he achieved his lifelong goal of conquering the Earth, and building a galactic empire.... But, in the end, he could not handle it. He could not keep everyone on Earth from overthrowing him by working together! To someone as fiercely obsessive and ambitious as the Master, that must have been a horrible disappointment, and proof to him that his only dream in Life could not come true because of his own personal inadequacy. That would be enough to drive a human to suicide, or at least to not care if they live or die. 😢

Even though Matt Smith is my favourite *doctor,* nobody can argue that David Tennant's era (2006-2009) is simply the most solid, and the peak of New-Who. Such a brilliant three partner this. Loved Utopia!

This scene is made all the more powerful when you realise that the Doctor believed he was personally responsible for the destruction of the Time Lords and regrets that action. Finding out that the Master was the other "survivor" replaced his hope of redemption with purpose - reforming the Master (the Doctor makes a go at this about 1000 years later in his lifetime, resulting in Missy being conflicted between siding with her past self and siding with the Doctor). The Master refusing to regenerate hurts the Doctor 3 times; 1) It's an insult - the Master has the option of regenerating and living as the Doctor's prisoner or dying. In choosing to not regenerate (I didn't know regenerating was a choice until this scene), the Master is implying that death is preferable to a life under the Doctor's supervision - the idea of such a life openly disgusts the Master. 2) The Master dying would leave the Doctor alone (as the last Time Lord) once again - the Doctor's hope of redemption would have been replaced with regret for his actions in ending the Time War. 3) The Doctor still considered the Master to be his friend, despite them being rivals. He's watching his friend die, and that is one of the worst things a person can experience.

This scene becomes all the more powerfull when you realise that the doctor only wanted to keep the master so that eventually one of them would regenarate into a woman and they could repopulate the Time Lord species. I understand why the master refused to regenerate, he probably would've been some sort of sex slave in a pregnancy cult. This is the real lore I refuse to believe the Doctor wanted him to live because he was "the last of the timelords", the Doctor was hiding his true intensions behind that phrase. Naughty

The last of the Doctor’s kin, his childhood friend, his one of the greatest enemies but still the only friend he got in the end, dying in his arms and his last words were him winning the game. One of the few moments I really felt that I was watching a time lord’s adventures.

Why cut out the awesome bit with Martha’s Mum and the gun?? It showed real character development for her, listening and putting trust in The Doctor, it’s a great scene!

I believe (though I may be wrong) that that moment was cut from the BBC America broadcast for time - that part's also cut from the episode on Netflix - maybe this clip's taken from that version. Or maybe they cut that bit so they could keep this clip to 4ish minutes while still keeping the context of the start of the scene. Either way, you're right, it's a jarring bit to cut when you know what's missing

One of the best scenes from a very solid run of episodes! Btw why has the part with Martha's mum pointing the gun at the Master in an attempt to kill him and then being prevented by the Doctor been cut from this version? The original version showed such character development and impact as it showed Martha's mum to be able to do the right thing even after enduring the hell the Master put her through. :)

I loved Missy, and her lines was funny as hell. But, this will always be my favorite Master. He just had this fun-loving, but scorched-Earth personality. That thumbs-up after "You're insane!" was the epitome of his character.

I love how tragic the character of the Doctor was during Russel T. Davies' era. Always alone, constantly losing even when he won (in the first season he died, in the second season he lost Rose, here he lost what seemed as his only chance of not being the "last Timelord", fouth season he lost Donna and finally he died again).

It’s really tragic that the Doctor had been dying internally over believing he had killed all Timelords only to find his childhood friend then somewhat lead him to his death.

This scene was so heartbreaking!! You can tell that the Doctor cares so much about the Master... even though he did terrible things. Doctor Who really knows how to mess with your emotions! *cries*

This scene is so.... I fell in love with John Simm. Such a wonderfully twisted, broken, passionate character. Beautifully portrayed. That need to frustrate the Doctor even if it cost him his life as well as being at peace while dying in his arms. Uff. Tennant I already was in love with, so no change there. If an actor could get an award for a scene, this is it. For John Simm. And Tennant, because I just like him.

10: "Regenerate. Just regenerate. Please. Please! Come on!" M: "And spend the rest of my life imprisoned with you?" Well, that more or less came to pass.

The way the doctors face changes when the shot is fired gives me the chills this scene makes me wanna curl up with my cats and watch doctor who while eating all the candy and ice cream i can find this show is awesome i know alot of people that say this show is silly and stupid

When the Doctor say "Were the only two left" I hear "Please don't leave me alone".

0:34 Looking back I'm really happy Moffat let 12 live out this dream even if for only a short while. 12 decided to guard and care for Missy (and teach her to be good) in the Vault. He settled down at the university and (initially) stopped going off world for her (and we’re suggested through bill that this lasted at least 70 years). He even started to change her and she joined the TARDIS crew for a while (that was AMAZING, I still wish we got another series of 12, Bill, Nardole, and Missy as a team). Series 10 never explicitly said this, but 12 must have been so happy to “keep” Missy. I wonder how happy 10 would feel to know he’s able to make this happen eventually (albeit over a thousand years in his future).

😭It's such a powerful scene😭 that's makes everyone cry 1 of my favorite doctors of all time it's so sad see him care so much for the master and all the things master has done😭😭😭😭

This scene broke my heart 😢💔 cause he was actual kinda happy not being the only time lord, and having someone to care for that wouldn’t “wither and die” and it would be even better because it was someone he grew up with, someone he knew, someone he truly cared about, and then he died right in his arms and the doctor had no way to stop it, no control over any of it and knowing him he feels like it’s all his fault. Then there’s the fact of no one would like to burn their childhood friend because their dead. For real. Heart. Has. Been. *SHATTERED* 💔💔💔

The music, the acting, the writing, the emotion, the chemistry. It all just bloody brilliant. Tennant was peak doctor who

Why did they cut out the scene where Mrs Jones picks up the gun and tried to shoot the Master?

Looking back on scenes like this and comparing it to what we have now makes me weep.

It's scenes like this that made me fall in love with the show. As a kid, I couldn't really appreciate the history between the two characters, but seeing the bad guy lose - and die - just to spite our hero, and that being portrayed almost as bad as a defeat to us is such a powerful representation of the Doctor and Master's relationship.

I'm eternally grateful that Moffat picked up that thread about the Master being 'kept', a concept which fascinated me, and on which terms they'd accept it. Though uh... I don't remember it being this heavy on the extreme close ups. Laying on the subtext rather heavily there. Like... more than usual between the Doctor and the Master.

Let's not pretend we don't notice the glaring hole that has been edited out where Martha's mum threatens the Master with a gun. Wonderful acting by Adjoa Andoh. It's missing from the Netflix versions of Who as it had to be cut down to accomodate adverts. As a Brit, I'm naturally appalled. BBC iPlayer for the win.

When "This Is Gallifrey" starts playing, my heart hurts. This is probably my least favorite of the RTD-era finales, but the Doctor holding the Master in his arms and sobbing... what a moment.

The Doctor The Master was resurrected in End of Time. He's been resurrected and swapped bodies multiple times in Doctor Who history because he's wasted his regenerations. The first time we see him in the Classic series with the Third Doctor is him on his last regeneration.

Are you sure he didn't sincerely want to die? Conquering Mankind and then the rest of the Galaxy had been a _burning ambition_ for most of his life! He finally achieved that, he had achieved *Everything* he had ever wanted! But, in the end, he just could not deal with it well enough! When a person accomplishes their dreams, but finds they cannot handle it, that can be... Dispairing. 😢

This was an epic finale, definitely on my top five.

Ah! The scene that makes me question if this is the best finale. The acting abs music in these couple of minutes are so powerful...

*SPOLIERS* (get the reference?) In The End of Time, the Master is reborn, but is sent back to Gallifrey where he was supposed to die with other Time Lords (& Time Lady)... Skip to The Day of the Doctor, and 11th, 10th, and War Doctors save Gallifrey instead of burning it, which means that the Time Lords & Ladies survived INCLUDING The Master. He then regenerates sometime there, and finally, in season 8, we meet Missy, the regenerated female form of The Master.

Plot twist: The Master was Harriet Jones and everybody knew who he was therefore he got fed up of life and died without regenerating...

One of the best clips of David's reign as the doctor.

How dare they cut off the end of Murray’s score!

David’s run was the best as you felt basically every emotion to its fullest when things was sad you felt like crying When things was happy you felt really happy

Watching this for the first time right now... very emotional, dramatic, and amazing acting from The Tenth Doctor David Tennant and The Master John Simm. Also brilliant writing and plot twist by Russell T Davies. People just HAD to acknowledge amazement... I hope I get to see a 100th Anniversary when I’ll be all old... Keep it up, Doctor Who!! 👋👍

This is my favourite moment in the Tennant era. And it shows off how great the Doctor/Master relationship is post-Time War. The Doctor is ready to forgive him for all the terrible things he's done, if only for the sake of having his old friend back and so he's no longer alone. However, The Master is too far gone and what started out as a rivalry in the Pertwee/Delgado days, turned into a full on war by the Davison/Ainley era. And The Master sees no reason why he should change just because the Time Lords are gone. He's pretty much free to do what he wants and The Doctor doesn't have the guts to beat him as easily anymore. I know there's a lot of shipping between these two, but this Master HATES The Doctor. He makes it his business to make him suffer as much as possible. Whether leaving him stranded at the end of the universe, making him watch as he decimates the Earth, torturing him and his friends with no intention of letting him die, turning everyone on his favourite/surrogate home planet into copies of himself, Cyber converting his companion or refusing to regenerate so he can live out the rest of his days alone. That's pure, petty hatred. That's The Master right there.

And yet, when he came back, the Master couldn’t help but return the favor to save the Doctor when the Doctor didn’t shoot him regarding the whole thing with Rassilon

I'm sure everyone's raving about tennants acting, but we've got to respect simms. Not only being cradled, but then also having someone shout full volume directly into your ear😂

Yup, Martha's mum pointing a gun at the Master until she's persuaded not to kill him by the Doctor.

Why did the cut the whole scene of Marthas mum holding the gun at the Master?

At that point the Doctor knew that he was truly alone in the univers

These 2 great actors together in the same serie was just incredibly awesome

"We take forever to die. Even if we're too injured to regenerate, every cell in our bodies keeps trying. Dying properly can take days. That's why we like to die among our own kind. They know not to bury us early." And the Doctor BURNED the Master's body in the very next scene 💀Don't even want to imagine what that felt like.

I imagine he waited days, weeks even in the TARDIS staring at his corpse, hoping that at some point he'd change his mind and come back. That he's so much more composed at the pyre because he's been crying so long already.

Just rewatch this episode Cause right now, making like a complete timeline in Doctor Who But it's getting confusing XD. I can find sources, but until Series 4 and above, the present day date getting more confuse, I can identify the year, but the exact month is hard to come by And oh my... Series 5 onward, they use the term "Far Future" sometimes XD

You can't make a comprehensive timeline for Doctor Who anymore. The dating for events that happened in Old Who were confusing enough, but Moffat sunk any chance of there being a singular timeline with all his retcons and "my timeline is in flux" BS.

One of my favorite moments of the 10th Doctor!

David Tennant was such a brilliant actor as Doctor. I fear noone will ever get even close to what he did with that character. When he was gone from the show I could never watch it from there on.

Master: "Always the women.." Enter Missy seven years later, killing people on whim.

This scene is part of what makes that three-parter my favourite story ever.

I love how once he 'died', the song 'this is Gallifrey, our childhood, our home' started playing

The master has "died" so many times before this. And AFTER this for that matter lol

To be fair, this is pretty melodramatic. A Time Lord "refusing" to regenerate is like a human "refusing" to let a womb scab. Aren't both supposed to be involuntary actions? ... Also, the Master decided to regenerate again, anyway... Somehow. Of course, that's not the first time that he regenerated from ash, either, given the Eighth Doctor movie.

Why does this scene make me cry so much?I mean I'm not someone to cry over sad scenes unless the situation is similar to everyday experiences. Great acting

The scene where 10 talks Francine out of shooting him is one of my favourites in this story yet for some reason it gets cut out in several versions of this episode. It’s still there on iplayer and I think the dvd release, but sometimes like in this clip they cut it
