Everyone talks about "collectors" in these videos but by far the bigger issue for merch sales is that kids aren't interested in Star Wars. The tiny number of grown adults who are still buying action figures can never hope to approach the massive volume of sales Lucas enjoyed when every kid wanted Star Wars toys for christmas. Sure, that handful of adults are likely, and able, to spend more per toy than the kids but the numbers still aren't going to match up imo

meanwhile, I just bought 3 Micro Galaxy Squadron ships on Amazon. But I'm a bloke who is 30 and thus a collector. And these things are expensive nowadays. I think the classic characters will still sell. Even prequel characters. Anything Clone Wars and Rebels related will sell too but their market is naturally small because they're tv shows and not big movies, and the kids who watched them have now grown up too for them to just now be marketing the new toys based on them. Even the ships I just bought were mostly from the original trilogy. The Falcon, the Slave 1, the snow speeder. There really was no coming back after TLJ, and Book of Boba Fett and Obi Wan put the nails in the coffin for the market. I want a baby Leia and a Drash and a Space Lizzo and Space Jack Black playset. Said absolutely nobody ever. At least Rey was goodlooking.

The rejection of Dizzy's Star Wars Merch is probably the single most vivid proof of the public reaction to what The House of Mouse has done to a former money-printing machine. Disney can play a shell game with annual reports, SEC filings and all that paper junk, sugar-coating it to make it look far better than it is. But when you walk into a store and see that junk merch hanging there gathering both shrinking price stickers and loads of dust, It is the one thing that Disney can't sugarcoat or make look better with fancy accounting or long-winded speeches from executives who know diddly squat about the merchandising end of things. What you do is to show what Disney cannot hide, any more than they can hide the declining quality of their new shows. It's all interconnected with a decline in quality and the (buying) public knows it, no matter what Disney tries to sell them.

Aside from the obvious reasons, why disney SW toys didn't sell, they also massively overproduced toys. Even in the past the starwars toys sold came in waves with a rather modest assortment, Disney on the other hand tried to fill half the toys section with all kinds of starwars merch. Then when the movies sucked, they couldn't sell the mountains of crap they dumped onto the market. back in the 90s-00s when i was a kid, i never could get a Boba fett figure, because he was always one of the first to sell out in a wave, and it took a long time for me to get a lando. Now both of them rot on the shelves. thanks disney.

That's true, but it wasn't just action figures that Disney put out, on the first force Friday, there were action figs, dolls, plushies, games, lamps electronic toys, picture books, you name it. If it could get the Star Wars brand slapped on it, it did. They tried marketing Star wars stuff into sections of the toy market that Star wars never was marketed too in the past, and none of it sold. I remember going to Toys-r-Us to Christmas shop in 2015 , and half of the Toy section was Star wars. And i remember when Toys-r-us sold, and they clearanced alot of it out. One thing in particular i remember not selling was the Power wheels landspeeder from ANH, because my sister had wanted to but one for my neice when the first came out, but couldn't justify the $300 price tag. When Toys-r-us closed those things were still rotting in the store. Back in the 90s when they rereleased the Starwars figures, there was always a modest assortment, maybe 12-15 figs per wave, and a few vehicles and maybe one special figure set (wampa, rancor, ect..) The most Star wars merch i remember at 1 time was when ROTS came out. The initial wave was around 20 figs or so, and there were some strange spin off 6 inch "force battle" figs or something that didn't sell well. But it never was firehosed out like disney has done with their merch.@@tomservo5007

I think the collector base quickly felt that it was being made by people not like them. JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson, KK - they're not Star Wars people. They're nothing like Lucas, who absolutely is. With the wrong people at the helm, it's no wonder the quality declined in both storytelling and merchandise. Imagine the money they could have made if they'd faithfully adapted the best stories from the original EU. Those stories were all written by true Star Wars fans and were beloved for decades.

The articulation being minimized was something that was going to happen. A former Hasbro employee talked about the angry letters/emails they'd get from parents about figures breaking, wrists popping off, etc. I think that a some of it was parents being cool and giving little kids the types of action figures not meant for them. But that's why the last of the animated style Clone Wars figures had reduced articulation. What started to kill Star Wars action figures and merch was the 3D Phantom Menace. Lucasfilm insisted Hasbro push that product, and it glutted that year. Lots of figures went to places like Five Below. Rising production costs pushed prices up, helping to kill the dying traditional toy market. Not that Disney didn't contribute. They cancelled the Clone Wars. That show was generated the last large amount of young fans, since Cartoon Network was on basic cable. Rebels was on Disney XD, not a part of basic cable packages. The Force Awakens saw a brief surge in general public interest in Star Wars merch. It didn't last. Disney's secretive nature prevented what would be great sellers from coinciding with media releases.

Because Luke was a super hero who saved the princess. Then princess herself was a badass who could hold her own. Han was the rebel, against the rules hot shot pilot who ran the Kessel run in 12 parsecs. Chewy was the gigantic beast that nobody wanted to mess with. Swashbuckling, laser fighting soldiers of the underground. The new characters were what? Councel members who brought up a significant point at the next meeting?

I can hardly believe anyone collects anything Star Wars at this point. The first three films became the equivalent to a modern, western mythology. Then it became more and more corporate. Now it feels like the pizza party meme, where instead of your employer giving you the raise and appreciation you deserve, they serve you barely edible food in a cardboard box while spouting corporate slogans, and yet, they still expect you to be enthusiastic about their bullshit.

Do it as a Barbie Signature doll and you'd also get the obsessive Barbie collectors hurling bales of cash at them as well. They could market the hell out of the Leia's a badass (no matter what she's wearing) and killed Jabba aspect. Let's see Rey do a fraction of that whilst wearing a metal bikini. . .

Disney should be scared. The toys from the 90's and 2000's are selling like crazy on ebay and if they aren't still in the original packaging, they aren't that much more expensive than the ones on the shelves today (IE: Micromachines Action Fleet vs. Squadrons Toy Series) AND the ones made in the 90's are slightly better quality.

Here's the problem: Hasbro and Disney want their merchandise to be top-tier level and force people to pay premium prices for it. However, Hasbro is working two different camps as far as action figures go with the 6-inch and the 3.75 inch lines (Black Series and Vintage Series). They release tons more characters with the Black Series because they can charge a lot more and don't have to worry about vehicles. The Vintage Line gets screwed over as it's more of a dumping ground for re-released characters. The Bad Batch had every character released in Black Series while the Vintage collection got Hunter only. Long-time collectors and fans who grew up with the 3.75 inch line feel under-represented and have, for the most part, walked away as Hasbro's new character additions are glacial. Since new releases are so seldom, and the Star Wars name is still strong (in their eyes), they feel they can charge premium prices. We used to pay $7.99 for a fully articulated character about ten years ago. Now that same figure is around $23 and comes with less accessories. Star Wars isn't the cash cow it used to be and collectors are showing their frustration and hatred for Hasbro with their wallets. I used to buy a few thousand dollars of Star Wars figures every year. Now, it's maybe a couple hundred and even that is dwindling when I see the Vintage collection still not getting the characters I want.

And if you look at their 'new' Vintage collection it's - Vader, Stormtrooper, Leia, Luke, and maybe one other character. Even the Ahsoka series doesn't give us the whole Rebels crew because you have to fork out $500 for the Ghost to get those figures. @@jazznickel

Not scared enough because they continue to destroy whatever is left of the franchise by following Kathleen Kennedy and even the Filoni who is the opposite of a "savior". There's nothing to save, they've destroyed whatever good will that Luke's return at the end of season 2 of the Mandalorian had given them.

Back in the day when I collected SW figs - the 3-3/4" line was almost all there was back then - you could get any SW figure for $5 or less on sale. Today, the same size, worse quality figures in the line are $12 each - that's NUTS and 3x what they're worth, from a quality perspective. And what kind of faux-wealthy nutcase is going to spend $20-$25 on a 6" "black series" figure ? Again, way back when I still collected figs, I could get imported Japanese anime vinyl figs in sizes up to a foot tall/long, with intricate sculpts and paintwork for $25-$35. Even the Spawn figures in their earlier days were only $13-$18 each, and way better quality than what you see from McFarlane Toys today.

Your old TRU video is showing the same problem as today: HASBRO MAKING TOO MUCH PRODUCT! Always trying to add a new line of scale or sculpt type instead of sticking to a) 4" b) 6", c) play toys like lightsabers. Also, STICK TO THE POPULAR FIGURES. In 1979, my mother was able to buy Tatooine Luke, R2-D2, 3PO, etc. If shelves have any figures at all, you can have none of those main characters. Luke, Leia, Anakin, Padme, Rey, R2, Mando. This has been a problem since 1995 and Hasbro seems completely uninterested in addressing it. At this point, as someone who grew up with these toys and has spent a ridiculous amount of time acquiring them, I say let it all die.

As I've said on another video, I remember back in the 90's and early 2000's, back in the middle of Star Wars being at the height of popularity. I remember seeing "We are unfortunately sold out of "insert character" " or simply "No more Star Wars" signs, I remember not just a small section in the action figure aisle being dedicated to Star Wars, I remember ENTIRE AISLES AND THE END CAP being NOTHING but Star Wars. Those days are gone... And they are probably never coming back.

Absolutely makes sense to me. As a collector not only has the quality of their figures gone down, but the MAIN thing is no one cares AT ALL about the characters they are releasing. I use BBTS for pre orders and they never get sold out of any black series figures unless it’s of old school characters. The only one recently that sold / sold out was as Baylan Skoll. But just like their movies, they never seem to take a hint and keep producing figs no one wants. We only got our second starkiller (technically first cuz it’s been so long since first) while we have like ten versions of a character we don’t care for. Even Sabine, a highly sought after figure years ago is now a character no one wants. As for me I only buy their old school stuff as well. As much as I hate the company, but they just released some KOTOR characters I had to have.

That is how bad Disney's Star Wars is doing as a brand. A bottom of the line store can't shift them, I can see Disney's toyline landfill rivalling Atari's ET landfill of 1983.*
