Im familiar with Culloden and most (or so I thought) about English Atrocities. I am overwhelmed with my ignorance. Thanks again for the opportunity to form a more accurate framework. 🙏 when's the next fix coming? Lol I check notifications for you every day, lol but happy to wait on quality!
I remember reading in a history book as a kid that one of the soldiers accompanied a few MacDonalds to the hills where he encountered a boulder now known as the Henderson stone and said the following: 'Great stone in the glen. Though you have every right to be here, if you knew what was to happen tonight, you would not stay here on any account.' The MacDonalds accompanying him took the hint, packed their bags and left as fast as possible before the massacre began.

The massacre at Glencoe is a story which forms an integral part of the oral history passed down from my family’s MacDonald heritage. Centuries later, this event hasn’t faded from those who were forced to flee the highlands for the relative refuge of far-flung Australia. The yearning for our ancient home has not entirely deserted us (and it’s bloody hot down here). There’s no going back, unfortunately.

Great download and narration. 💞 I have Scots ancestry on my mother's side, and feel great affiliation with my ancestral roots. This massacre has shocked me from an early age, especially as my birthday falls just a few days before it. I highly recommend the short film from 1971, as mentioned on this download. 😱

I think the worst thing that was done, was send Scottish against Scottish. I've watched the movie as you recommended. IMO: 1. Those who wanted revenge - got it (in white gloves); 2. Those who ment to get lesson - also got it; 3. "Heavy weather conditions" - gorgeous and handy excuse 😅 (now replaced by "covid")
Man ! You have some GREAT content. Well done 👍
My clan name is Campbell, I am also descended from Stewart and Laurie( a border clan).I stayed in Glasgow for the best part of 50 yrs, I was a keen mountaineer and frequented Glen Coe regularly. Whenever I stayed at the Clachaig Inn, I always signed in as Stewart Laurie. As in Ireland, it is up to the murderers to remember and the murdered to forget Always a Geal.

It's such a shame that religion, a force for so much good, can also result in such acts. For this all boils down to (in my whisky aided mind) to power, religion and security. I have visited Glencoe, it is absolutely beautiful but there is an aura of sadness in some parts especially the places where the killings were said to be committed. I went to a site called Inverigan House ruins which is a site where several MacDonalds were killed. It is especially profound there.

I'll argue invasion, as William was invited by a good number of the great and good of the time. But yes, it's definitely a point for debate :-)
The campbells are coming be quick be quick
I watched the other film. It was insidious, what they did. They thought themselves safe... sleeping in their beds: the soldiers that killed them, had food in their bellies from the innocent families who had hosted them. Freely given hospitality, despite likely not having enough, as it was winter. The soldiers likely would have lost their lives to the weather had the clan not sheltered them. It defies belief that the unit leaders could go through with it. Soldiers, who had laughed, joked, and been welcomed with open arms for two weeks, killed men, women and children in cold blood. In their sleep, in the deepest darkness of the night, no less. They saw the families' children at play, their babies rocked in cradles, and their elderly folk, and the whole time, likely knew what they were there to do. It only went to show that the Scots were right: the British had no honour. Knowing full well that they couldn't beat the Clans in a fair fight easily, they chose the coward's option. The chiefs had no choices: take this blood money, or you will be killed. Disgusting. Even when the chief who could not give his oath tried his best, they were still marked for death. No wonder that oath of "protection" had zero meaning after that. Because it was totally worthless. I'd have been furious enough to raise a rebellion as well. Out and out war is one thing: those who are there know WHY they are there, and are prepared as much as they can be, to protect themselves. The sleeping clansmen had no chance. The absolute WORST point? The unit were made up of Highlanders. They knew how bad murder under trust was.
Scotland should have been left alowne . They didn't need the idealistic mentality of others . That was is ruff country sides and they took care of their own people just fine with out the invasion they should have tried to be friends. Back stabbers still exist today and not in a good way. Love you works DD
so it turns out it was mostly an internal Scottish matter!
