Rippers Without Stickers is a new series that pairs the world's most ripping (yet also relatable) unsponsored surfers with Firewire's most popular surfboards. This is a series that shows you what talented surfers with down-to-earth talents look like when riding shapes in Helium, LFT and otherwise.
In this episode, Rip Curl's James Harrah reviews the Mashup; a new shape collaboration between Rob Machado and Dan Mann, built in Firewire surfboards Helium technology.
He also discusses his favorite fins with the Mashup - the Endorfins KS1 Thruster from Kelly Slater and Slater Designs.

Nice! Great concept. I felt like I was in a surf shop getting advice from a fellow surfer, with some video clips to boot!

James knows his stuff. He has ran the Rip Curl store in San Clemente for a few years now, and before that he managed surf shops in Australia and New Zealand.

@@firewiresurfboards Impressive - no wonder. Very articulate 👌
This is an exceptionally good review of this board , inspiring surfer and well articulated.... I've seen a few reviews of this board so far but they either don't have surf clips or the surfer can literally BARELY surf and has no business reviewing a surfboard.... this review changed my mind and I'll be placing my order today, KEEP THESE KINDS OF REVEWS COMING

James is the Man! Way to rip it. Great review. Get me one yesterday
If you ever want old and can barely stand up I'm your guy :-) I wonder how this compares to my Evo? It's such a fun board in a wide variety of conditions.
Amazing review!! Thank you guys 🤙🏼
Nice review, good to see this kind of content out there. The pros shred on everything, it's hard to tell from their surfing what you might be able to do on the same equipment.

@@firewiresurfboards this is so valuable! I’d love to see reviews like this for all models glazer, Dom 2 flat earth. It’s so helpful to see how a board would go for you at your local break
Totally agree - a heaps fun board in a huge variety of conditions and super lively underfoot!
Great job James!!!
nice review, waiting to get it here in canaries! used to surf uppers a lot, amazing spot, after pedro's or wahoos tacos nice life
Awesome Review James Harrah 👏👏👏
great review lots of info as it should be.
looks fun!! cant wait to get one for my quiver! nice surfing too!
Awesome review🤙🏽🤙🏽I’m glad to see someone that rips do an unbiased review without trying to promote anything. This vid made me get a mashup and been enjoying it for the last 2 weeks. James is spot on with the characteristics and feeling of the board. I’ve used the machado tri keels and Dan Mann quads and the board is 🔥🔥🔥. More reviews from this guy pls firewire. We need more reviews for a lot of firewire surfboards🤙🏽🤙🏽

Tyrone, thanks for this feedback. James has a couple of our other boards right now, and we'll make something like this again with him in the future. But he's got to stop surfing his Mashup so much first.

Ripping! Such a good review. I’m so right dead in the middle on sizing between 5’8” and 5’9”. In your opinion which way should I go, up or down?

The way the tail is foiled out, you won’t be disappointed in going up to guarantee paddle without sacrificing performance.

@@firewiresurfboards yes!!! Been waiting for this for a while.
Great review. I can't wait for mine to arrive. I weigh 170 (180 with a suit on) and im debating getting large or med fins. I saw that you liked the med fins. With the large fins, was the board too stiff? I'm worried if I get the meds, I'll have a looser board but with less drive. Thoughts? Thank you!

Mediums I'd say. I'm same weight. All round fun on a board like that. Be different if it's your grovel board though.

@@a.lame.username. yeah it’s my groveler. I’ll just switch to meds when there’s waves. Thanks for the help!

Yes, Probably best to start with Mediums. Also - a 2 + 1 setup can be fun in the Mashup as well. What helps most is having a thruster set that doesn't have a huge trailer (I.E. the medium fin set James mentions in this video).
Age 55 190lbs. Alway ridden a short board but now I need more paddle power. I don’t get to my feet as fast as I use to. Still want to do tight turns. Not ready for a mid length yet. Thinking about the 6-6 Mash up? Surf head high beach breaks any bigger going to a point break.
@firewiresurfboards

Yes. You can size up the Mashup easily because of how thin the tail gets, and because of the step rail. Both design elements enable this board to feel drivey and stable even when riding more volume than you usually would. Enjoy! 😀🙌🏼
What tail pad do have on yours please? I am trying to pick a pad that fits well with the step in tail.
@jamesharrah6531
2 жыл бұрын
I used Slater’s Action Pad - fit well enough on my 5’5 with a little roll over the step. Most standard pads will be fine, but if you really want it to fit the flat part of the deck, you’ll want to do a narrower pad (Slater’s Flat pad, Firewire Low Rider, Dakine JJF, etc.).

How is it compared to the dominator 2? I have the dom 2, would this be redundant?
@firewiresurfboards
2 жыл бұрын
Good question - both boards are very different from each other. The Dominator 2 is an all around shortboard that can function as your daily performance board, but slightly beefed up from traditional performance boards. Per length when compared to 'standard shortboards', the Dominator II contains much more volume. The Mashup is really not a performance shortboard like the Dominator II is. The Mashup is a groveler hybrid - its the Seaside with more 'shortboardability' added into it. What this means is that it has the same ease of paddling and speed as the Seaside, but it can fit into tighter turns and feels more controllable in a tight, punchy pocket.
@smacker360
2 жыл бұрын
@@firewiresurfboards Thanks for the quick response. You answered my question with enough detail to save me from buying something I already have covered. I am more of a performance surfer and can get all I need from the dominator 2, even when groveling. I just didn't want to miss something in a swallow that might be on the same performance level as the dom 2.
