Fun Fact: Sirens are, as is written in The Odyssey, actually bird-like creatures and not mermaids, which is why singing is a part of their lore. They lived on rocky outcroppings and would lure sailors into crashing into the rocks and eat the corpses.

You're both right - in modern interpretations, sirens and mermaids are practically synonymous with each other, but the original Greek sirens were bird-people (not unlike harpies) who called out to sailors from an island. There are some wonderful pottery depictions of the Iliad that make that very clear.

SPOILERS: For those wondering what the opening scene to Ghost Ship is: There's a party on the ship, most staff and passengers attending, and the little girl they're talking about is attending alone (I think she is, anyways. We don't see her parents.). She's dancing with the ship captain and a wire above the dance floor snaps and cuts everyone in half between waist and chest height, except the little girl because she was shorter than that. Blood everywhere, people's limbs squiggling about with at least one person trying to retrieve their bottom half, girl screams, scene ends. All in all, fairly decent movie if you like gore and ghost movies. I'd give it a 6 out of 10. Opening scene gets a 9 out of 10.

Sirens were imagined in Greek mythogy as bird-bodied maidens living in a rocky island. They lured nearby sailors with their enchanting voices to shipwreck...Mermaids, even though they also have a Greek mythological origin, are mentioned in many cultures worldwide. Both creatures caused shipwreck thus oftentimes people think they are the same.

The original sirens were actually half bird half woman creatures that sat on rocks somewhere in the Mediterranean and lured sailors to their deaths by singing. As they sang, whoever heard the song would see them as beautiful women and in some cases the sirens and mist that surrounded them turned into the listener’s heart’s desire. It was said that one could gain great wisdom by listening to their song (if they survived to tell the tale). They come from Greek Mythology and are featured greatly in The Odyssey, where Odysseus had his crew tie him to the mast of their ship. The crew then stuffed their ears with wax to protect themselves while Odysseus listened to the songs and saw the beautiful sirens. The crew, of course, only saw the sirens’ true forms which were actually particularly unpleasant to look at. If you were to swim out to them, they’d kill you on their rocks and eat you.

actually the mythos of mermaids/sirens comes from manatees!!! even though manatees are known as being pretty silent creatures, they werent always that way! they used to make noises that served similar purposes to the noises dolphins make to talk to eachother, but that bared an uncanny resemblance to human speech. as time went on, though, these vocal sea cows were hunted and caught by confused sailors, and so most modern manatees have adapted to life without much chattering. some sources in case anyone wants to read some more! www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/11/141124-manatee-awareness-month-dugongs-animals-science/ www.history.com/this-day-in-history/columbus-mistakes-manatees-for-mermaids oceanconservancy.org/blog/2018/05/23/mermaid-sea-cow-dugong/

Sirens are not like mermaids, and they don’t drag people under the water. They’re women with bird-like qualities who lure sailors to their death with their songs. The sailors’ ships crash into the island that the sirens live on. They’re also 100% mythical.

Have you heard of watcher entertainment? It’s a youtube channel that they run with steven lim and the three of them do little video ideas they like e.g. Puppet history! The Professor (the puppet) is portrayed by shane and ryan is the co-host/guest that’s thwre each episode (?) there’s also spooky small talk where (before covid) ryan would have an interview with people about what led them to become the person they are today, inspired them in their carriers etc. while walking through a haunted house! Steven lim has a series Homemade Goods (i think, I just found the channel recently and I haven’t ventured into steven’s part of it, so I can’t tell you much about it but I know fans love it) and so much more!! Anyway maybe you can suggest this over there (i think they have a business email too? I’m not so sire though) to see if they’d be interested in doing something like that! I know they already have a show called Top 5 Beat Down where they (shane and ryan bothe the hosts with kne guest) rate things in a list of 5 where they did rate pixar films in one of the episodes so maybe that could work for you? Since it’s sort of close to what you said, but not exactly as they didn’t really say what they’d do differently, or very seriously apply what they learnt in film school, but it’s still amazing. This is long as hell and not proof read (I have a tendency to make typos) and I hope that you actually get through all of this mess (or actually manage to see it, lord knows youtube won’t show me when someone replies to my comments)

My retired Naval officer dad likes to watch your videos. After watching about the Mary Celeste he told me that he actually read the Admiralty report on this case and that it was believed that the following happened: the captain smelled fumes and believed that the industrial alcohol in the cargo had leaked in the hold and he was worried the ship would explode. In order to keep everyone safe they got into the life boat with a line still attaching them to the ship. They had set a course for the Azores and it was assumed they hoped to come close enough to the islands that they could row the lifeboat to safety. It seemed at some point they detached from the ship and attempted to make it to the Azores but failed.
