I met him in '86 at a surf expo in Orlando. He asked me to stay and just talk with him as everyone else was just taking pictures and getting Mango stickers signed. We talked about surf, and food for hours. Food mostly actually.... mostly. The best thing was when my buddy who brought me showed up and MR introduced me to Jeff as his "friend" Jeff almost dropped, it was sweet. Super funny. He was one of the most giving famous folks I've ever met.

The wounded seagull the best but hey I am a newly boy. I used to go Richards Surfshop in Newcastle West every Thursday night Ray, mum and Mark was always there and I'd get a ding repair kit..

Remember back in 80' when I was really into surfing MR was the man and the guy everyone wanted to surf like. My first good board was used Red and Yellow MR Retro Twin Fin with the Lightning Bolt on the deck. Couldn't surf nowhere near what MR could on his worst day, but I did have a cool board. 🤣🤣🤣

30 years on mr still looks pretty modern. one of the most influential surfers of all time, but he was never comfortable in the tube.

I own 2 Mark Richards Surf Boards made by Reno Abillira in the late 70's. I surfed on those boards all over so cal. and Hawaii. I was proud to pass on one of those boards to my sun. It wasn't just the name resemblance but I admired and was inspired by MR's surf style and attitude.

r m @ . . . you are not "too old." MR as an amazing surfer. He was over 6 feet tall and had that unique gull wing stance. I was lucky enough to see him surf at Fairy Bower (Manly Beach) in the very early Eighties. I used to love watching the end of year surfing specials when he was World Champion for 4 consecutive years ! MR was my hero as he did not look like a traditional "Aussie surfer", was shy and humble. In comparison, his main rival in Cheyne Horan, was loud, blonde and eventually ...belittled. Mark Richards wiped Cheyne out on all fronts. It is rumoured that Horan could barely get a sponsorship deal after MR's dominance.

I got my first surfboard in the early 70s. I put up with these pieces of crap for almost ten years. These days a 12 year old on a modern board surfs better than a world champion of the Mark Richards era.
