    I like how the art style changes from when he’s a boy to a man. The boy is smoother and has his eyes visible, while the man has more scribblish art with his eyes hidden, showing his anger, and when his eyes do appear it either shows his vulnerability when he hears his mother or his crazed drive for revenge when he finally has the captain in his grasp

    @6:50 Look at the difference between the captain's face on the left, and the orphan's face on the right. The captain is actually of this world, and fears death, whereas the boy on the right is no longer human; he's just a walking force of nature-- the living embodiment of revenge and death. The captain thrashes around spluttering salt water, and the orphan just sinks silently into the black depths with only one thought on his mind. There are all these great little scenes throughout this whole video, but this one is one of my favorites.

    Revenge may be a dish served cold, and there may be two graves involved- but a young man robbed of a good father is certainly something to be avoided, now if you'll excuse me I think there's a possum to go look at at this late hour and I rather like nature watching. But yeah screw that guy.

    Actually, whales do have teeth. The whales you're thinking of are baleen ( their teeth are fibrous and hair-like, but still made of enamel). This whale was a (check out this creative name) toothed whale, obviously based off of Moby Dick, which was a sperm whale. @Artur Janz: This was incredibly well done. I thought the style matched the mood of the song really well. Kudos!

  • @marchofsaints

    @marchofsaints

    10 жыл бұрын

    Well, I'm not sure where you looked up that definition, but it's not quite accurate. A roustabout is a general term for a blue-collar type worker that works in rough conditions, also called a roughneck. Sometimes it is used disparagingly for people that don't have much of a life and have a tendency to go from job to job learning no real skills. Given the context of this song, this is most likely true. That, and the artist even admitted it was a goof up. Still, great art and stylization. Well fitting and well done.

    It wasn't his father, his father died and his mom was a fresh widow. He took advantage of his mom and gave her consumption (TB) and then piled all of his debts on them causing the land lords (magistrate) to evict them. She then dies of consumption and he spends 15 years homeless before joining the church to sustain himself while he found a way to get revenge. Eventually, he joined a band of privateers (pirates) and likely told them what had happened to him so they chased after the fucker with the intent of giving the lad his revenge.

    The point of the line is that it’s in his head and she never said that. He twisted her words so he feels guided and doesn’t have to feel guilt as he is going through with it. In his head he definitely will go through with it and that’s why his mother says “as you avenge this wicked deed” instead of “if you avenge this wicked deed” since she never said that and it’s just what he thinks she would say It’s confusing as hell but basically she didn’t say it and he is thinking that’s what she would say as he was going through with it.

    Man.. this song hits too close to home. My father was a sailor, much like in this song, he was a bastard that wronged my mother, dissapearing after all the shit he put her through. She's luckily still alive, but damaged, so my hatred for my own father is great. Ended up working offshore aswell, only because i have a love for the open seas. I hope i meet the bastard one day, just not in the belly of a whale.

    ViciousEmperor doesn't hit close to home for me but i did have a fk'd up father myself... :/ unfortunately ended up going on longer then it should and some days i wonder if it's really stopped or not. Kinda drives you over the edge and with everything happening now (especially in Australia) makes things quiet hard So despite not being a sailor or having much related to this story exactly it does give flashbacks...

    I always thought his method of finding out who the guy was seemed sketchy (pun not intended). Like what kind of description did the "penitent whaler" give that would so unerringly describe the roustabout after 15 years? How do we know he has the right guy? How does he know he has the right guy? Like...what if the "captain" at the end is just some poor whaling captain whose entire crew and livelihood was swallowed by a whale, leaving him as the sole survivor, except there's this half-mad, deranged sailor claiming he was the man who wrong his mother 16 years ago? So miraculous to somehow have survived the whale attack, only to be tortured to death in the belly of a whale.

  • @Zixxiee

    Well being a song (and not a novel) and limited by meter and whatnot, it likely didn't (couldn't?) give all the details that may have been present in the protagonist's experience. Perhaps he questioned the Penitent Sailor further? Perhaps his passed mother gave him some hint? Regardless, Meloy's writing is so descriptive that this art is so easily conjured to mind. Janz's skill put it to digitalised beauty. Kudos to him.

After he is drug away, the Apprentice's gaze lingers a moment, then he turns away as he leans back into the cushioning. All we see is the hint of a smile from the shadows as he raps on the ceiling of the carriage with his cane and the driver snaps his whip to spur the horses on.

    I loved this animation. I heard the song recently and I wanted to hear it again, and you hit the spot nicely. I'm glad you left the ending as FIN, since it has a bit of "Lady or the Tiger" feel to it. Something just don't need explicit detail. Especially since if you think about it, the frenzy that the musicians left did NOT fill in that detail, since the mother's refrain was not recalled at that point. Don't let anyone tell you different!

    the mother basically took her son's life, the only thing he knew was revenge and that's because of his mother. If she had just said I love you he probably would've lived a better life where he wasn't trapped in a whale murdering a man. I guess you could say his mother basically killed her son, if he didn't seek revenge he wouldn't be in a whale in the ocean with no way out. He gets revenge but he also dies, unless his mother's vengeful spirit somehow possessed the whale causing that to happen and then swimming back to land.
