Though Marius instituted these reforms and had the political will and moral courage to see them through they were hardly original ideas of Marius and probably would had occurred without Marius. However with the Cimbric invasion being an existential threat to Rome and the catastrophic loss of two Roman Armies at Aruosio, due primarily to the incompetence of Aristocratic Generals it was this devastating defeat that really precipitated these Reforms to professionalize the Legions. The main reason was that the Republic was designed to govern a City State and not a world wide empire. So though the actions of men like Marius and Sulla ultimately led to the collapse of the Republic the real underlying reason was Romes Republics inability to govern a large empire. It had become hopelessly corrupt by faction and interest of the powerful Aristocrats who placed their personal ambitions above serving Rome. So these reforms became necessary if Rome was to survive as the dominant power in the Mediterranean and what was needed was a strong central government that did not exist under the Republic as it grew larger and larger and thus the pressure to reform centuries of traditional finally became intolerable.

Don't know if you mention it or not, but Marius was married to Caesar's father's sister, making him his uncle. I realize this is entirely a different subject, but when Marius lost to Sulla in the first Roman civil war, Sulla killed many of his enemies' families, ran them out of town, or allowed them to stay within the borders of Rome as private citizens on thin ice. Caesar's immediate family was stripped of their wealth, causing him to grow up relatively poor in contrast to his forefathers, but at least came from nobility. This really contributed to his character in being a man who stood with the common people, but born of nobility, which would later propel him to great power, winning the second civil war against Pompeii and the Senate. Sulla became a dictator (but not in the sense we understand it today) and passed legislation designed to make this impossible for anyone else to achieve, which ironically, would lead to Caesar later becoming a dictator himself. This paved the way for the transformation of Rome from a republic into an empire, under his distant nephew Octavian, whom he adopted as his son in death, and succeeded him to become the first Roman emperor. It is a VAST subject but infinitely interesting. Kings and Generals just did an amazing 5-6 hour long documentary on that very subject. Keep up the great work!

You missed some of the reforms. They got rid of their light infantry and cavalry and hired mercenaries to fulfill these roles. They went from three classes of heavy infantry to one single type. You failed to mention that the cohort was a much larger unit than the maniple which it replaced. I do not believe that scholars are sure if all of these reforms happened at once or were a gradual development after the Punic wars.

The videos are fairly short so often, not everything can get squeezed into the scripts. We really only scratched the surface of the consequences as well. So really it would have been decades before they fully came to fruition
