Meryl is one of those rare few who was BORN to be what she does. Ridiculously talented. Incredibly attractive. She has the most classically lovely features. She is innovative, genius and a legend.

+Cammiboe : Agree 1000%. Greatest actor I have ever seen, and I've seen a heck of lot in my time : great British, European, American actors etc. She beats them all. A truly gifted actor. Just her range of accents is amazing. I live in Australia and I can tell you that she got the voice of Lindy Chamberlain perfectly. I really don't know how she does it.

didnt even mention that not only did she do a polish accent in sophies choice...but she learned german and spoke it in a POLISH accent as well speak in the polish language itself. shes so awesome it hurts

She is amazing and extremely versatile not only in her accent but in her look and body language too, she is never Meryl Streep. She is always someone else. Great video

It's not just the accents. It's the change in the tone, resonance, pitch, just everything. The same woman does Julia and Sophie? THAT is amazing. She is amazing. Even physical embodiment. And the same example. Julia? Sophie? Play the scene where Sophie is at the station and is so frail and just slips to the floor and where Julia enters a room "Hellloooo".

Have you seen her portrayed a rabbi in Angels in America? Talk about physical embodiment. Speaking of which, how about the first scenes in Iron Lady where she was now the aging Margaret buying milk from a store.

Someone should make an animated movie where Meryl Streep dubs every single character!!

Her Polish impersionation is beyond excellent. She even has that glow in her eyes that people who have limted command in a language have, if you ever talked to a foreigner with basic English you'll know what I am talking about.

To me, her very best one was the Polish accent from "Sophie's choice". There were moments I could not even understand what she was saying. Her most tragic role, I think her performance truly marked me. Oh, and as for her perfect british accent, I believe it was more accurate in "Plenty". If I hadn't known better, I'd have said she was born and raised in England. Amazing woman, Meryl Streep.

I agree --her accent in Plenty is deeply and seriously British !! Just my two cents: perhaps her British accent in French Lieutenant's arises from the character she portrayed: a damaged, lonely, tragic, and self-deprecating artist.: hence lots of drama in the persona. Whereas in Plenty, her character was more of social in nature.

i love that "android" is a dialect.

You forgot Margaret Thatcher's impersonation in the iron lady. Superb performance!

i do SO agree with Mr. Alvin Elmore.... JUST stumbled across this. Am confused by the (so called) "commercial" actor's" comment (???) Meryl was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in 2011...I mean (smiling) not for nothing. The musical tribute was divine at the KC ceremony, and she, a NJ woman, like me. (NOT here to discuss my own "commercial/pro career") Her eastern European accent as well as the "Bronx"..impeccable! (i have a slight problem with the "dingo took my baby"...THING) hahaha... SHE IS among THE. .... BEST and LOVE her! Iconic and beloved.

She is not only masterful with language and dialect but she has the uncanny ability to get deep into the heart and soul of every character she plays. Marvelous Meryl Streep!

I can't personally vouch for the authenticity of any of the accents affected here, since I don't really know what a proper Polish, Australian, Danish, Irish or Italian accent sounds like. Accents tend to be very specific to the person using them. For instance, not everybody who was born and bred in The Bronx sounds like the Mother Superior character that Ms. Streep played in "Doubt," but her specific Bronx accent was consistent enough and had enough of the flavors of general New York City speech that I bought it. However, that is not what makes Ms. Streep a great actress. It takes far more than being a good mimic to be a good actress. Ms. Streep is expert at building a character from the ground up. Mimicry is just a part of that process.

I have never seen a more mind blowing performance by an actor than the one she gave in Sophie's Choice.

She's great in everything, but her performance in Sophie's Choice was absolutely the best performance by an actress in a movie I have EVER seen! It was like a tour de force and almost super human! Totally brilliant.

Meryl Streep is TOO bloody brilliant. When she plays a role, she's not Meryl playing a character, she IS the character.

Her Polish accent is phenomenal.

Unquestionably, the greatest actress of our generation. She has no competition.

What as amazing actress! "Acting happens or it does not happen" - it happens every time when Meryl Streep acts.

I was born in Germany to Croatian parents and therefore spoke a blend of German-Croatian, emigrated to Canada at age 6, was immediately indoctrinated (simultaneously) into English and French.....and I now as an adult my English has long been colored by a mild European-ish accent nobody can identify, not even me. An indistinct sound.....suits me just fine.

She is the ultimate chameleon! Love her

Meryl Streep is the greatest actress who ever lived. But Gary Oldman does an entirely different voice (not just accent) in every film he's ever done. If you made a video like this for him, it would be twice as long.

I saw Sophie's Choice with my mother, who is German. I remember asking Mom how Meryl Streep sounded when she spoke German in the film. Mom was awestruck - she said Meryl sounded exactly like a Polish woman speaking German! She could not get over that an American actress could get the accent so right.

I‘m german as well. And yes your mother is right. Only in some words I can hear that she’s an englisch native speaker. But in 90% I heard german with polish accent.
