The Many Identities of Istaroth (Genshin Theory and Speculation)

Ойындар

Istaroth, also known as the God of Time, is quite a mysterious character in Genshin Impact. Hints regarding her can be found all over Teyvat, from the mountains of Mondstadt to the depths of Enkanomiya. In this video, I go over my thoughts about her, and why I think she could have eyes everywhere.

I think Venti to the God of Time is gonna be like Nahida of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. Anemo Statue of Seven: Legend say it was sculpted in the image of the Anemo Archon. "Seeds brought by the wind will grow over time." The statue silently anticipates the arrival of the noble soul, while *thousand winds of time* will soon unfold a new story. Venti: Ah, Traveler, we meet again! What? You don't remember me? Ahaha, well allow me to join you on your quest once again. Or Venti could also be the God of Time? Think about Morax, God of Contracts but also the God of Wealth.

@@eihr267For Zhongli God of Contracts/Wealth, I don't think it could be used as an example :") All Archons has an ideal, an element, and the way they use to spread this ideal. Venti's ideal is freedom, his element is anemo therefore the God of Wind, and the way he spreads freedom is through songs and poetry. Zhongli's ideal is contracts, his element is geo therefore the God of Earth/Rocks, and the way he spreads/uses contracts is through money, wealth. Ei's ideal is eternity, her element is electro therefore the God of Thunder, and the way she spreads eternity was stasis during the archon quest, and now transience. Nahida's ideal is wisdom, her element is dendro therefore the God of Plants/Grass/Nature, and the way she spreads wisdom is through dreams. I like your theory though!

@@eihr267 id like to add to this by explaining how venti and ista are literally both born from the *branches* of time: theres a riddle in the byakuyakoku collections to which the answers are: years, months, weeks, days, minutes, seconds etc and "all of these came together to form the winds of time (aka istaroth)" these are essentially what branches of time are, as for the meaning of the verb "to branch" is to divide into one or more subdivisions, like weeks divide into days

True! And i feel that Venti is definitely hiding something from everyone. Like he knows how things will go, he knows who is who, what they hide, and what they try to disclose.. i think he also knows about Lumine, The Abyss and everything yet powerless to actually to anything... He wasn't joking when he said he's "weakest" Archon.... He actually cannot do anything against his progenitor, Istaroth... He's just a pawn who happens to gain a powerful seat or is otherwise called as (Queen) "Gnosis"... He became Archon just like as if Istaroth was playing chess with her Pawns (Thousand winds) as to keep an eye on the world or more precisely on Celestia... There's something more to it... Why was she the only one who helped when the other three shining shades gave cold shoulder...??? Why her?? Why didn't others came?? Why did she went into hiding her entire existence..m it's though as if she manipulated Irminsul all over... Except for the archons who hold knowledge about everything related to Celestia... ? Is everything a part of her grand plan? Was the primordial one killed and the is tricking everyone and she's taking her revenge through this...???? Personally i think so too.... It's either that... Or the Abyss order is secretly worshiping the ? Or vice-versa... Because the entirety is confusing as hell.... Untill they decided to drop some lore about it... T^T

There’s a theory that Teyvat is sort of a matrix situation, in which everyone is trapped in an endless loop of Samsara. The world blooms from a seed, grows, and reaches the end of its life, only to begin anew. Istaroth is present in each one of these instances, watching over humanity, but also having an existing consciousness tied to the other parallel universes. She is mostly a silent observer in Teyvat, forbidden to affect the natural progress of events, but still doing what she can, hoping that one day, some day, the loom of fate is destroyed…and the endless cycle of Samsara ends. It’s why Scaramouche said the sky is fake. At each cycle of Samsara, a person dies and becomes a star in their own constellation. With each cycle, they add another star and become stronger and evolved in a sense. It’s interesting how the Traveler has a special set of constellations for every element they become able to use.

and if Venti were to be a part of Istaroth, or their network, and Istaroth is a shade of the Primordial, not the current seat it would explain Ventis dislike for Celestia. Archons are described as having a throne in Celestia, but Venti mentions having to be invited (I would not go even if I was invited). If he were a Part of Istaroth that would explain his difference from the other Archons who don't need this invitation. Also Istaroth talking to the traveller is something I doubt. She's been shown to be an observer so far, and only few parts of herself actually interact with the world. I personally believe the voice could be Monas Teacher, who is a member of the Hexenzirkel and rival of Alice.

I also feel there is a special meaning behind Cecilias, they look stragelly similar to triquetras and if you compare the petals, pretty similar to what is depicted on mora and locked domains. Also, I don't think we were ever told why is it that Raiden put the visions on the statue of what we believe is Istaroth? I wonder if that had any special meaning....

I've been thinking that the Traveler's awakening are the core catalyst for all of the major events in the narrative so far. * Barbatos is asleep while Dvalin is raging until the Traveler awakens. Venti directs you to Morax. * Morax doesn't pull his contractual evasion schtick until you show up. Which is something he could've pulled at any point in time. He also directs you toward Inazuma. At this point, I think Barbatos and Morax are aligned on a bigger plan that depends on the Traveler being a "witness," and they are directing us toward each of the other Archons for their own agenda (of sorts). Inazuma and Sumeru's situations being rectified are important for their goals. Now-- I was thinking that Greater Lord and Makoto were also in on it as a reaction to the cataclysm. The plan already being laid out and known-- I suspect Greater Lord already knew that Nahida would lose her memories, but understood how she'd react and what would be needed to set up her up for her own role to play... If we think of the archons as their own faction of sorts, I would've put Greater Lord as the leader, but after your video Istaroth makes a lot of sense. I'm inclined to think that maybe the Archons are not quite acting on Istaroth's behalf directly though. Istaroth first and foremost seems like an observer with much more subtle intentions. If we think of all the major factions (that exist beyond national borders) that we know of so far, Istaroth has potential involvement in a lot of them... as if the whole of the current events are machinations of their design? Hmm... I guess I think the questions to really dive into are around what Istaroth's goals actually are. If we look at all of the factions, what outcome is expected from all of them interacting and how does the Traveler catalyze that?

Re: The Sacred Sakura- Domains seem to have a different flow of time than Teyvat- Ei was battling the Shogun puppet for 500 years continuously. When people line up the events of Enkanomiya to that of the war of The Second Throne or the Archon War, things don’t line up with either. The path going into the Makoto’s Realm was a chaotic collection of streams of time and events… If Istaroth is able to manipulate those paths, the seed of the Sacred Sakura could have been placed into a stream to the past as easily as we moved 500 years into Ei’s future. The seed may have actually been planted, and Irminsul may not have been changed. That is: Domains may be adjacent to Teyvat, not exactly in it. Any direct intervention by Istaroth into Teyvat may be seen by Celestia or others, but working from Domains, small and subtle changes can be made. …just a couple thoughts.

Small note, during 3.5's Windblume event, the Traveler speculates that the voice he heard at the end of Scaramouche's quest is a witch belonging to the same Hexenzirkel as Alice. Said witch's name is Nicole, codenamed N, and pointed by Alice as being a prophetess and having a habit of suddenly speaking to people telepathically. While i personally do not believe she could be one of the Thousand Winds, its one more person to add to the list, should there be enough evidence for it. Plus the witches of this particular Hexenzirkel all seem to be particularly powerful, having at one point in time decided to face off against Barbatos. Rhinedottir was also part of this circle, and there are suspicions that Rosalyne (La Signora) might have also been part of it.

Another character that might have some connection with Istadroth could be Yae Miko. I remember reading somewhere that it implies she can see everything that is going on in Inazuma through the sakura blooms (sorta like being omnipresent throughout inazuma), though this might be a metaphor for how she manipulates Inazuma's situation to get Ei out of the plane of Euthymia (and this is from my memory of a reddit post I saw so, y'know, probably not the most prestine source of information, but it could still be something to look into.) Either way, her appearance is still very similar to the statue of the omnipresent god, particularly her hairstyle. A counterpoint to this is that we know that Yae was born ~500 years ago, making it less likely that she is actually an instance of Istadroth, but she might still have some connection to her.

We now know that Nichole of the Hexenzircle was the voice we heard at the end of 3.3. Also, Paimon shares way too many similarities with the welkin moon sister to not have some connection to either the moon sisters or istaroth. And most likely to istaroth. They both are the only characters to have an upside down Triquetra associated with them. The welkin moon sister has hers right side up, but istaroth has hers upside down (as seen on her thousand winds temple) which she shares with only Paimon. And Paimon also has the crown above her head, which is VERY similar to the 5 crowns we see in domains that represent the primordial one and the 4 shades. And lastly, she finished Venti’s line about seeds of stories being brought by the wind and cultivated by time, which is the sentence on istaroth’s compass thing (which coincidentally points towards Celestia). Paimon is likely the main reduced form of Istaroth. As in the main body. Similar to Guoba being the reduced form of Marchosius. This would also explain why Paimon always has some basic knowledge of any region of Teyvat but doesn’t know the whole story. Because she USED to know but lost her memories about it all. I’m not 100% certain but I’m around 90% certain at least. This is the most likely situation in my opinion. I feel like some catastrophic event led to Paimon being in that river when we fished her out. Either that or it was the final link in a chain of horrible events that led to her losing her powers and forgetting who she is. And we fished her out in Mondstadt, which is the above ground region most associated with Istaroth. I feel like this one is just Mihoyo slapping us in the face with some big clues about Paimon’s origin but without outright confirming anything.

Yes, this was before the Hexenzirkel event. And Paimon very well may have connections to Istaroth too, but I don't think they are the same. Mainly because Istaroth and Paimon are both names derived from the Ars Goetia, and so far no god has had two Ars Goetian names. Perhaps there is a connection, especially since the names of the moon sisters are all musical terms (Aria, Sonnet, Canon) and the name of Mondstadt translates to "Moon City," perhaps indicating a link to Istaroth and/or Venti.

What I like about you as a theory crafter is that you visual all your words through video like a presentation. You show where, when, what, or why, or how in the video. Though editing must be exhausting but for me its easy to understand this way especially its KZread. Other theory crafters are just talking like a podcast and just put random videos on it. I'm not gonna name of one of the many. That kind of format is really annoying since i get distracted on a video instead of what he/she saying. Basically, the reason of why I subscribe to you is your theory video format and I love it. Hope you wont chant this kind of format. I watch your theories from Genshin to Honkai Star Rail. two salvageable thoughts on this, other than that i was mostly the pepe silvia meme gif. one: istaroth would, with time powers, easily be able to see what was actually happening and what had happened in the past. while we as travelers can find out what "timeline" we're in by finding any evidence of change -- and "timeline" here is really just "what timeline everyone remembers happening vs what we lived through and remember" -- istaroth would likely have to ability to see each individual change. irminsul essentially has retcon powers, and although it's limited to not COMPLETELY erasing anything, it's hard to say it's not forcing everyone onto one particular "branch" of a timeline at once. istaroth, being the god of time, would likely be able to not only access those discarded or "pruned" timeline branches, but to manage literally all of them even if they continued on past where we diverged. additionally, with her essentially limitless ability to see, she can easily find the information she'd need to determine what in a particular timeline separates it from another. plus, there's no indication that time would be any less accessible as an element than the others, like dendro for example. nahida has been able to notice corruption in dendro energy, recognize the source of that energy, and more as the dendro archon. a god of time would be able to do at least this, and would likely allow for bypassing of any actual footwork. the timelines (or changes) would be clearly palpable to her, as we've seen or heard of every archon having a close connection to their element, along w/ being able to sense it in ways others can't. two: ei and makoto are like, 80-90% not istaroth. what happened there blew my mind (and i could be wrong) but i am pretty darn sure istaroth's power was literally growing the tree backwards through time in that realm. that allowed it to move forward naturally later. literally such a baller move i cannot even fathom. anyway this was excellent and confirms that we can know a WHOLE LOT and still ABSOLUTELY nothing. thank you for your time and effort :)

  • @lnsflare1

I mean, time did change when Scaramouche failed to erase himself (due to having insufficient amounts of divine power remaining, and because even a full power Archon can't erase themselves), it's just that the narrative momentum of time was so great that the broad strokes of the events still happened, just done by someone else rather than the puppet who was more never known as Scaramouche. The evidence of this is that physical objects like written records and the Wanderer's outfit were changed, which is not something that would occur if just memories were altered. Additionally, Katsuragi, the guy who discovered the puppet allegedly lived for decades past the time he was supposed to have committed ritual suicide in the original sequence of events, though we still need to see if we get some more heard evidence that this actually happened, like him having currently living descendants who can be traced to a child born after his previous execution date.

hear me out, So my take on this for now atleast, is that theres a possibilty the third descender is actually Istaroth, The goddess of time. My reasoning isnt super amazing, but i feel like it could actually make some sense, while it could also be easily debunked so im going off with what I know. Istaroth for SOME reason was somehow FORGOTTEN in each place she was being worshipped in but her legacy was perserved through phrases which are related to the 'Wind of times'. The places where shes being mentioned a lot is Mondstadt and Enkanomiya, In mondstadt there was a world quest that involved the sundials which are related to Istaroth and keeps mentioning the Thousands winds and such, (Kairos, the *Thousand Winds* of time) Apparently Both Istaroth and Barbatos were worshipped in mondstadt until a certain point where it was just barbatos. And barbatos (venti) has some (a lot) of similarities to istaroth visually. which gets us to inazuma where we actually get to see Istaroth's appearance, which is the Statue of the Omnipresent God (most likely being Istaroth's statue,) She has a pair of angel wings, an amulet that represents 'eye of the storm (the wind being in mondstadt) and her bangs that look exactly like that of the welkin moons sister. (when you buy welking moon there is the animation where the lady uses her staff and gives you the primogems, that lady is probably one of the three moon sisters.) well and Venti's bangs look a like except the fact theire braided. and mentioning Inazuma there is the entrance to enkanomiya which sinked below the world like mentioned in the video, (beacuse of the second who came) And when the people of enkanomiya plead for help from the primordial one, only Istaroth responded. resulting in her being worshipped there until one point where it turned to worshipping orobashi (not sure about this part anymore, i dont remember as much of enkanomiya anymore) and well this brings me to my reasoning as to why shes probably the third descender. in my theory she probably at first sided with Phanes ( 1st descender.) until some point in history she changed sides (probably beacuse of the second who came, maybe showing her the real nature of Phanes or persuading her to beacuse of enkanomiya) Phanes probably didnt like that and probably killed her which resulted in her becoming the welking moon (3rd descender being Dead & Unknown beacuse she was killed, and forgotten but still present.) and another reason i have for it is she was the one who made the Gnosis and visions. here it could go two ways for me so either she made The gnosis for all the seven and the visions as a way to stalk those who have a will that is able to shake the heavens Which Phanes "requested", Or. She made the Gnosis beacuse of Phane's "request", then turned sides, some things in the history happening like Istaroth answering the people of enkanomiyas pleads, and ect, Until one day she was killed beacuse of these actions by Phanes, became the welking moon, and started giving out these visions as a way of being OMNIPRESENT over Teyvat and giving the Mortals and Any other being who gains a vision a way of conquering Phanes. Angelic wings, and eyes are probably Istaroth's main symbols, and her death is exactly why she does not intervene with Teyvat beacuse she cant, since she was killed, but shes still present beacuse she became the welking moon. Which is how she is Omnipresent, i also got this theory beacuse Venti's gnosis is the queen piece. which might have some advatages agaisnt the other ones, and in this case if Istaroth really did make the gnosis she probably gave it to him knowing him best compared to all of the other archons.

I'm not convinced Istaroth is any of these characters nor that she is one of the moon sisters. I do think the goddess of flowers likely was one of the moon sisters, but I don't think she was Istaroth. If you read the description of the Staff of the Scarlet Sands, which is written by King Deshret and appears to be about things Nabu Malikata told him, "First, the sun and the moons were created" and it talks about how there should be three moons. Now, plenty of people, including yourself, have already discussed how the moon sisters likely are shades of the primodial one, but there are four shades not three. If you include the fact that the moon sisters are described as riding across the sky in a lunar chariot, and there is also a solar chariot which fell, it seems likely that the fourth shade is the one who rides the solar chariot. In the temple of the thousand winds, the single detail we have, both on the shore and on the hidden island, is a SUN dial. Moreover, we've never had any direct association between Istaroth and the sun. The sun is a key part of the lore that so many people seem to overlook. Remember, the book about the primordial is called before Sun and Moon, not just moon. I'd also point out, the four shades are the four principle archangels of christian mythology. They are, in order of how well known they are, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. A shorthand for their names is written on Mona's Astrolobe in the Latin based language used frequently in the game. I'm sure, since you mentioned her, that you're aware of Ashikai's videos on the subject. That is the primary inspiration for the shades, and in truth, I think you look too deeply into the lore and draw a lot of reaching conclusions. There's a lot of things that are true about the mythological inspiration for these characters that are not true about the characters themselves. Anyway, if you want to talk more about the deep lore of Genshin, I have a lot I can share and I'd be very happy to have someone to discuss it with. If I changed your mind about anything and use my theory in a video, I'd appreciate it if you said it was mine. I'm not promoting anything. I'd just appreciate the recognition.

The statue of Istaroth is probably in Inazuma because Inazuma is a nation ruled by a god of eternity... which is just a word to express endless unmeasurable time and/or the type of moments in time we see in the Eternal Oasis in Sumeru's questlines. I don't know what the connection is between Makoto, Ei and Istaroth... but it seems Ei especially we see trying to better understand/represent the concept of eternity (albeit all wrong which she sees in the end). Istaroth really is everwhere and youre right, she's that statue in Inazuma for sure. Time bears witness to all things and I wonder if Istaroth's children (Venti, others...) also recall even what Irminsul forgot? You cant fool time, you can only fool people's recollection of it by tampering with record of it. I'll just bet it would be impossible to fool children of Istaroth, as well as any other children/servants of the 4 shades who weren't truly of Teyvat similar to the Traveler and Primordial one

I have been trying to read into ars goetia and the other Christian/Jewish texts which mention the demons like Astaroth, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Baal, Morax etc. Interesting things I have noticed so far, Baal is the archon who is a king of hell in goetia. The others, Morax, Barbatos, Buer, Focalors all are either Dukes, princes or presidents, which begs the question is it just a coincidence or Raiden is actually very important. Interestingly enough, Ei's demon name Beelzebul is not mentioned in ars goetia, rather it seems as though it's just another name of Baal. However in other literatures such as the kabalah, Beelzebub (very similar to Beelzebul) is one of the three highest ranking demons alongside Astaroth and Lucifer. These demons are used in the anime Black Clover as well. Where Astaroth is a devil that controls time, Lucifer can control gravity and Beelzebub can control space. Back to Goetia, Paimon is a king of hell that is very loyal to Lucifer. So who is Lucifer in genshin impact, the traveller or the Primordial One? I am also wondering if the Tsaritsa could have a demon name from one of the kings of hell in goetia, since she seems to have a very important role to play in the future. But I can be wrong. Who knows? I am just mentioning this because it all is really interesting.

Just found this video today, after arriving into similar conclusions last week thanks to one long insomnia-fueled lore deep dive session that started on the *ESOTERICA* Channel, here on KZread, and went everywhere from entries about the Qur'an on the *Jinn Wikia* at Fandom, to other pre-abrahamic obscure wikis and pages: this forgotten goddess, which goes by many names, can be found pretty much everywhere at a certain time in human history, as a friend or consort (or sister, or both) to many male gods, even being the female counterpart to the one true god *"El"* and the mother of the twin gods of Dusk and Dawn (as in the passage of time). ... My current crazy headcanon is that Istaroth is the mother to the siblings, who are divine in nature and somewhat linked to Teyvat, even if not native to it; She also is the Seelie ancestor who fell in love with the Sun (or Morning Star or Venus or something similar), "breaking" the firmament with their forbidden love and leaving her sisters, possibly the other shades, hanging, thus causing a second war in the process? So "our" father may be the original sinner / Second who Came, an actual god to Phanes' Demiurge-like rulling... while Istaroth got fragmented into multiple beings in the process - just like said beings got gradually fragmented even further, from Seelies to Jinns and water spirits and the such... all of whuch can still be described just like the JINN wiki says: _"These are conscious beings, which are invisible. In the Holy Qur'an they are described by the word JINN; among the ordinary people they are also known as 'spirit', ‘fairy’, ‘giant’, ‘ghost’, ‘JINN’ ,‘elf’, ‘aliens’ and various other names are given to them depending on the image they display. The people think that they are the SPIRITS of the dead people, so they try to establish contacts with them by calling them. Last but not least, these conscious beings introduce themselves as ’BEINGS FROM OUTER SPACE’ to those people whose level of knowledge is insufficient to be able to buy their stories with respect to Nafs (Soul) the JINN take its existence, its liveliness and its ‘self’ conscious from the absolute ‘SPIRIT’. [1]"_

When you mentioned the hundred-eyed statue being a representation of Istaroth I had a brainwave that I'm sure other people have thought of but I don't think has been expressed anywhere. Generally people say that Visions are the "eyes of God" and are referencing them as being Celestia's eyes on the ground, more or less. But. Like. What if they're Istaroth's? How better to be omnipresent than having these things scattered everywhere across the world? It's already been said that it's not the Archons who give out Visions and then Nahida said that the Heavenly Principles (presumably Celestia) have been silent for a very long time. But Visions are still appearing in the world so they have to be coming from somewhere, right? I suppose the other argument might be like they manifest solely due to the Vision holder's will (subconsciously) or something and they never had anything to do with either Celestia or any of the gods but I'm not really feeling that idea. Anyway, thought provoking video, thanks! :)

I think vision distribution is kind of an automatic thing it's source are the archons/gnosis possibly and its kinda like, the visions are automatically given to people who the archons would already give said vision to anyways some sort of fate/constellation thing maybe

@@_Flame9029 No spoilers but since my comment a few months ago we've learned a lot more about where Visions come from. So....my brainwave appears to have not been quite on the mark. :)

I don't think there would be so many hints left behind about her if that were the case. Rukkhadevata's existence is only evident through the Eternal Oasis and artifact/weapon descriptions.

The Moon Sisters theory is a popular one, and it might be true, but for me I think they're Instances. And yes, the other Shades would likely be equally as strong.

I don't think any of the real world mythology works but if you are going to use it then at least I think you should make sure the connections are real. For example why do people keep saying the star of Ishtar (8 points) is the same as the star used by Deshret (10 points)? 8 is not 10. Is the idea that it's just a star any star at all is good enough? Ashikae made this mistake and I feel people just repeated it.

  • @SiliconOneFour

The star of Ishtar is most commonly seen with 8 points yes, but it does sometimes vary. The star of Ishtar was also shown to have an eye symbol in the center many times, like King Deshret's star. Basically, King Deshret's star is the game's interpretation of the Star of Ishtar, and has just been slightly modified. Also, two of the points on King Deshret's star are on the outside of the main outline, and that main outline has 8 points. So no, it wasn't a mistake.
