The Manta Ray: Northrop Grumman Unveils New Underwater Drone

Ойын-сауық

Northrop Grumman has recently introduced an innovative addition to underwater drone technology.
Named the Manta Ray, this unmanned underwater vehicle not only mirrors the form of its namesake but also symbolizes a significant leap in capability for extended-range military operations. Developed over a span of four years for DARPA, this project integrates advanced technologies, including the ability to harness energy from the ocean.
In this video, we’re taking a closer look at Northrop Grumman’s latest advancement in uncrewed underwater vehicles, providing an initial glimpse into the capabilities and potential applications of this new class of underwater drones.

    It's not going to need a typical drive, why make a wing unless you need lift? It will use buoyancy give it an up or down force and glide in almost complete silence forward.

  • @mike_oe
    @mike_oeАй бұрын

    I don't get it: Why use wings, when you already have sufficient lift/bouyancy? When not required for thrust, like in the case of the Manta Ray, wings indicate that the contraption needs them for lift, and being so much heavier than water is that large wings are required, is an inherently bad idea.

    The problem with UUV's (unmanned underwater vehicles) is communications. Just like with a submarine, it's impossible (with current tech) to communicate with UUV while it's under water.

    Dollars to doughnuts it doesnt sit on the bottom (because of the suction effect when you lose buoyancy on one side of your vessel....ask a submariner). Itll probably deploy a cylinder capped on one end that it pushes into the mud, then pumps the water out allowing the ocean pressure to push it deeper into the mud. Platforms use this type of anchor all the time. Want your anchor back? Just pump water back into it and iit pops right out. However, that little water current energy harvesting flyer is pretty neat! Though one wonders why not just use an RTG..... Sure there wont be enough energy to charge and swim, but it can 'hibernate' and charge.... Also, what is its propulsion system supposed to be? Those 4 props on the wing tips? Itd be interesting if they tried magnetohydrodynamics again, but as I understand it that tech has too many issues to be reliable and grunt proof..... And why doesnt if flap its wings?!?! What was the point of all that research into how fish swim?!?!

    @@llorttaf Honestly it does seem pretty pointless to have it ray like and just strap propeller tipped motors on the trailing edge. It feels like when stuff pops up on wish that is absolutely a material overrun or prerun of a canceled product design (Some company ordered a few prototypes and they ran off a bunch thinking it was going to be a thing...then wasnt). Like, this idea was floated in a spitballing meeting and people (media side, not development side) ran with it....
