The Manila You Don't See 🇵🇭
We took the ferry down Manila's pasig river and got off in a random neighbourhood to explore.
When I heard about the free ferry service here in Manila I knew we had to check it out so I called my mate @timtense and we went on a mission to explore a local area I'd never heard of.
We cruised down the Pasig river all the way to Santa Ana and the ferry costs a whopping 0 pesos.
I knew nothing about Santa Ana so was excited to see what these smaller areas of Manila are like.
As always in the Philippines we had such a good time. We met so many friendly locals and Santa Ana itself was a really nice area.
It was alot quieter than where we came from in Binondo and the church here in Sta Ana was stunning.
We had some Calamares which I heard were some of the best in Manila. They were alright the homemade sauces were delicious but I'll be honest our calamari in Europe blows them out the water.

Philippines was inder Spanish rule longer (333 years from 1565-1898) than Mexico was under spanish rule (300 years from 1521 - 1821). Also the trade route of goods from east to west is via the Manila Acapulco galleon trade that run twice a year for 250 years without fail from 1565-1815 between Manila in the Philippines and Acapulco in Mexico. Between the 250 years of the galleon trade significant number of Mexicans settled in the Philippines and vice versa. 10 percent of the tagalog language are traced to nahuatl the precolonial Mexican language. The Philippines was not ruled directly from Spain, it was administered by the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico). Most people familiar with the Filipino language are aware that roughly 20 to 30 percent of our words can be traced to Spanish roots but what many people, even Filipinos themselves are unaware of, is that a sizable portion of Filipino vocabulary can also be traced to an ancient language spoken in Mexico since 5CE called Nahuatl. Some of the everyday Filipino words that have Nahuatl origin are words like "nanay" (mother) "tatay" (father) "palengke" (public market) "tiangge" (flea market) "pitaka" (wallet) "tukayo" (namesake) "achuete" (anato) The past Mexican Ambassador to the Philippines, Ambassador Camarena mentioned that about 10 percent of the Philippine vocabulary has Nahuatl origins. How this came to be is because of two events 1. The Christian Muslim War in the mid to late 1500s an 2. The Manila Acapulco galleon trade that run twice a year for 250 years without fail from 1565-1815 between Manila in the Philippines and Acapulco in Mexico. During this long period, there have been tons of cultural exchanges between the Philippines and Mexico.

The cleanup of the Pasig River is a work in progress. It was declared biologically dead but massive clean up over the last decades have been done. There are several esteros or tributaries flowing into Pasig River. I pray that in the next 10 years years Pasig River will be much much better.

@@EllisWR Was going to comment on this too. Though our Pasig River can never be brought back to its original state, it has actually improved tremendously in the past years because of the ongoing rehabilitation work being done on it (dredging, removing floating garbage, etc). It was a lot lot worse before the rehabilitation. And it actually even won the first Asia Riverprize in 2018 for all the work that has gone into it. It's like Dolomite Beach. You should see photos of what it looked like before. It was full of garbage.

@@EllisWR oh you guys are now in Bicol region, the land of beauty queens. I supposed you will feature lots of bicolano cuisines such as pinangat, laing, bicol express among others. Bicol is known for spicy and coconutty dishes. There are beautiful beaches there too, a perfect cone shape volcano, some extreme sports, a number of waterfalls, hot springs, lots of rice fields similar to Bali, you can do humpback whale watching or swim with whalesharks too. Did you guys patronize the train (PNR) to get there or you just do it by means of a bus liner? Excited about your adventures there
the most likely culprit of those waste are those informal settlers living near the river. Pasig River used to be clean several decades ago until those people came living in Manila. Good thing the cleanup efforts of the government continues. There are of course some clean urban rivers in other islands.

Why were those informal settlers allowed to settle there in the first place? It is a very inefficient and lackluster government you have there.
@ericroca8879
Жыл бұрын
@@raychabaharuddin3399 for years the local government units used them for political purposes. You can't really force them out else the human rights commision will be your number one enemy.
@raychabaharuddin3399
Жыл бұрын
@@ericroca8879 What an absurd excuse! Naturally, the state has the right to compel them to leave, but the problem lies not with those illegal settlers per se, but rather with the government itself. The Human Rights Commission is pursuing your government because once you are evicted, your government will be unable to offer suitable homes to those settlers, such as through the housing commission for the underprivileged. All of this stems from the poor governance and corruption prevalent in the Philippines, of course.
@ericroca8879
Жыл бұрын
@@raychabaharuddin3399 lol, both the informal settlers and the government are involved of course! Corruption can be found anywhere and not just in the Philippines. Seriously, I get tired with these 'blame the government' rhetorics when the issue is the whole system itself. This is not just the government's responsibility alone but of all Filipino citizens. At least now there are efforts to fix the problem.
