How do these episodes feel? Do they feel like Star Wars but smaller? Am I immersed in the world? What is worldbuilding like in these episodes? Star Wars to me always felt like a grand epic. Each trilogy began with our main characters in their isolated worlds, but as the trilogy began they were thrusted into adventures that took them to places and battles that had galactic importance. Each Star Wars movie had epic battles with dozens of different vehicles and starfighters that added so many layers to what was going on on screen. With this show being on the small screen, I was curious yet nervous about how it would translate to something much smaller in scale. The clone wars and rebels had the benefit of being animated, so while the graphics were amazing, it wouldn’t cost a shit ton of money to create large scale battles and locations. When I realized that the final climactic battle of the season was going to be a man with a jetpack fighting one tie fighter, I instantly thought about this shot from the force awakens teaser where we are getting tie fighters left and right. Was this a concern, yes but a small one. So how did the mandalorian handle the budget of a TV Series and not a movie? Well darn tudint the series did a fantastic job. From the very first shot the mandalorian sets the tone of what kind of show this is. Every Star Wars movie has begun with a shot in space, panning down towards an entire planet, showing off the scale of the star wars franchise. The mandalorian begins with a shot of a device that looks like an HDMI adapter. Now this is not a bad thing. Jon Favreau knows this show is going to be significantly smaller in scale, so let’s set that tone right away. Also the scenery of the worlds that we see aren’t these giant ass city planets that have a moving pixel everywhere. They are just these small run of the muck towns that are filled with everyday people. And I’m not talking about the bozos like me who have a 9-5 job, I’m talking about people who have to work their ass off everyday just to put food on the table. Star Wars has always had a solid grasp of making their settings feel really old school while still feeling like it’s in a universe with planet killers and laser swords and wide boys. In the first 15 minutes our main character goes to 2 different bars. And these aren’t the trashy bars you would go to if you’re a horny 19 year old college kid trying to find some hot ass. People aren’t dancing around bopping out to some random ass song while you feel like the king of the world drinking a natty lite. These are western bars. You walk on and only the hardest people are chilling there drinking. Maybe there’s some classy music playing and there’s definitely going to be a fight. There’s a great quote by Jon Favreau that proves why he gets Star Wars so right. He doesn’t take inspiration from star wars itself, but the things that inspired star wars. The kurosawa's and the flash gordans of the world. You know how when you watched the force awakens for the first time and they went to takodana to that bar in Maz’s castle and you were like, oh shit this is basically the mos eisley cantina but in 2015. You don’t get that vibe in the mandalorian. This is just a regular bar that seems like it belongs in the star wars universe. Another thing I love about the scenery here is the diversity. That’s right I just dropped the D word. I hope you are now triggered. The original Mos Eisley cantina was so awesome because there were all these different aliens. Some looked like humans kinda, and others looked like some wacko shit. I like how we see some familiar aliens and some new ones. This is where I think the sequel trilogy messed up a little bit.

From a production standpoint, two things happened: the heads of Lucasfilm were too busy dealing with the movies when this was in production (which means Jon and Dave got minimal input from non-creatives), and the second? They decided to do their own thing, and have fun doing it. This matters. It's authentic storytelling Now? Lucasfilm's biggest moneymaker IS the Mandalorian, so I expect more interference from executives as they go on (but hopefully Jon & Dave stand their ground).

My favorite thing about the Mandalorian is how they kept themselves from telling the "Save the galaxy, all life everywhere is at stake!" overly big stories we kind of expect from Star Wars, and just did small stories. The life of a single child is at stake, and we care more about that than we do about the big story First Order blowing up a whole solar system.

Damn I love your videos. They bring the exact mix of genuine positivity and honest criticism I've been trying to find in the Star Wars community. Also you have such a great variety of interesting SW videos too. The new format is working very well for the review! Especially the world building section was very appreciated since that's one of the most interesting things about SW. I'd say one thing to improve is that you could do less explaining of what you're going to do instead of just doing it (by that I mean explaining the structure of your video). But this wasn't a big deal or anything, just came to my mind. Awesome job dude, can't wait to see what the future holds for your channel!

Bro, you just single handily made me realize with 7 minutes and 36 secs that the reason Djin wants to regain his place with the children of the watch is so after they view him as mandalorian again they’ll follow him and with the dark saber and after he brings together the other mandalorians he can change all the rules and unite the entirety of his people.

And season 2 is great too! And not just cause of frickin O.G. Luke Skywalker turning up. Yeh sure season 2 Mando did feel alot like a kind of "fetch-quest" type series. But it's honestly cool Favreau made it like that because he was actually trying to set up a kind of branching out for future spin-off shows. Yeh the first season of Mandalorian is just awesome. From the moment it opened, and our mysterious Mandalorian character takes out a guy using the frickin door! That and the episode where the Jawas strip his ship and run off with ALL his parts lol; and he doesn't just go and kill them all (cause you know Fett would have in a heartbeat), there's this nice playful kind of thing that goes on, and Mando has to get this egg that they want, all just for the yolk which is a delicacy. Those are the two main things that had me hooked straight in, cause i was seeing grittiness, but also the show wasn't afraid to have nice, jokey kind of quirky comedic parts, which is alot like George Lucas's storytelling sensibilities. So it made me think, shit, this guy Favreau he get's it! He understands how George crafts starwars. I can't wait until Favreau get's to make his own starwars movie. With Favreau's experience as a solid director, and Filloni's immersive knowledge of Starwars lore and his storytelling skills, they make a great team.

"The Mandalorian Season 1... Why It's Great" ? The answer is simple. It is not great. It's a mediocre at best cowboy show, that has barely any good elements in there, but disney, with their utter garbage work with the Star Wars universe dragged down people's expectations to the level where anything that is not negative looks great. And of course there is baby yoda. Second season is better. Still not great. What makes a show great is the story that it wants to tell. Mandalorian fails at that.
