The man who lost his sense of touch - Antonio Cataldo
Explore the science behind how your body and brain process different sensations like touch, pain, temperature, and spatial awareness.
--
We don’t often think of touch as being a vital part of movement, but touch is one part of a network that oversees all the sensations arising from the surface and interior of our bodies. Touch, pain, temperature, and our spatial awareness are regulated by this system. So, how exactly do our brains process these sensations? And what happens when something goes wrong? Antonio Cataldo investigates.

I’ve had severe migraine before to the point that I needed to get my brain scanned because it resembled a stroke. One half of my body went numb and I had aphasia which means I couldn’t speak properly. It is rlly freaky to lose feeling. I can move my body but I have to look at it to confirm movement because I really couldn’t feel it move. And walking was a nightmare. People don’t know how much we depend on our sense of touch to walk in a balanced way. Depending on eyesight alone is really tough and downright impossible as someone with a migraine whose eyesight was also affected. I was not aware of how we walk because we just usually depend on our sense of touch.

It is quite common to experience numbness in feet when sitting uncomfortably for a long time. I think everyone has had this experience of not knowing when the feet touches the ground and not knowing how much force to apply to stand erect (when experiencing numbness).
Fascinating. Can you imagine not knowing where your limbs were without actually *seeing* where they were?

It was the scariest sensation ever, I knew I was moving my arm, but my brain couldn't understand what was happening and how I was doing that 😅. I don't really know how to explain, but I thought I was going to lose it, lol!

Excellent video. Sensation is a key factor in learning process.
A very good video of TEDx. It’s truly fascinating to see how complex and delicate our bodies are!
Thank you for his video !! this will be very useful to teach people about losing the sense of touch. Sometimes, I asked my friends which sense would they pick if they have to sacrifice one, and I'm often surprised that some people choices the sense of touch as an easy answer for this question.
The body can so terrifyingly fascinating sometimes.
Wow...This dude, I didn't even know that it's so important for us to feel the body parts in space. Nevertheless, the human body is capable of much and can be considered a real treasure of nature. Seriously, I am surprised by such a complex and thought out to the smallest detail system. Even if something breaks, the body always finds a way out. Body and mind connection is fascinating. I'm a SA survivor and it's very interesting how trauma is stored in the body. I sometimes disassociate from my body, which is what I did to mentally survive the SA. Problem is it still happens now when I have flashbacks or am triggered by things. The book The Body Keeps the Score by expert Bessel van der Kolk discusses how yoga can retrain the brain and body to understand that it is safe now, to untrap it from the trauma of the past.

I had a mild stroke 9 years ago and for a couple of weeks I lost all feeling on the left side of my body. I could still move and walk but like the video describes, I had to watch my left hand to know what it was doing. If I picked something up, I didn't know how tightly I was gripping it so if I stopped watching it, I would drop things. Luckily my feeling came back. A man in my stroke recovery group never got his feeling back on one side and he accidentally burned his 'unfeeling' hand really badly on a grill. he didn't feel it but eventually noticed the smell of his burning hair and looked down.
This woke me up to some issues and challenges since brain injury thankyou

What I’m getting is that the song Paralyzed is about this guy. “Where are my feelings? I no longer feel things, I know I should. I’m paralyzed”
Actually the pressure sensing problem was a big thing with the first generation of “nervous”prosthetics which uses sensors attached to your nerves to a CPU and wires within the arm to control and relay touch and movement like a real arm would
All of our senses are just refined forms of touch.
الحمد لله على كل شيء
