The Man From Uncle - IIlya Kuryakin -The Cool Spy

Ойын-сауық

Robert Vaughn and David McCallum were well known actors before they worked on The Man From Uncle TV series.David had just made The Great Escape with Steve McQueen and Robert had made The Magnificent Seven with a stellar cast that also had the great Steve McQueen in it.The Man from Uncle pushed their fame into the stratosphere with the show attaining cult like status. In the beginning the role of Napoleon Solo with Vaughn was much more fleshed out.As David McCallum states in one of the DVD extras, the character of Illya was a blank page and he had to slowly bring him to life. What we see as the series progresses is that Illya begins to develop into an uber cool spy and his frosty demeanor towards women was an acceptance of the dangers of spy work.Eventually both Vaughn and McCallum developed an easy working relationship that mimics Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in the Road movies. Some of the most blatantly funny scenes ever made for TV began to develop from what was originally a serious spy show. The series eventually evolved into camp theatrics and may have caused it's demise, but we as viewers still have this cult classic to enjoy.

Handsome blond David mccallum as illya will always be loved by this black Detroit 60's chick. He was so cool and I have followed and loved his movies and Tv shows .He will always be my favorite blond! As teens in the 60s l remember we all screamed when he hosted Hullabaloo and answered the shoe phone of a dancer and she was a black girl. It was like when everyone would run to see the Motown stars on Ed Sullivan!

I had the man from U.N.C.L.E. gun when I was eleven in 1966. The best Christmas present ever. We had the board game too. Too cool. I was in the man from U.N.C.L.E. club too with the badge and the card. That made me the coolest kid I could be. My sister loved Illya. I thought Napolean Solo was the best. I wanted to be him. In 1972 Robert Vaughan came to Porterville California to campaign for McGovern and he gave a speech at the community college. I had to go see him. I remember his shiny black hair. I was about 30 feet away from him, but he looked exactly the same as in the show. Rest In Peace to all the cast that have departed.

David McCallum was the first actor to base his appearance on the Mod look. He still looks timeless, five decades after the series had finished. As for Robert Vaughn, the missing between Cary Grant and Jon Hamm. Both actors were utterly unbeatable at the height of their fame. It has been forgotten just how massive this show was in the mid-1960s. Surviving memorabilia from the TV show commands a small fortune now. I wish I still had my vintage U.N.C.L.E annuals now! The early seasons were the best. Shame about the recent film which threw away a great opportunity..

Great stuff. Robert Vaughn and David McCallum were class acts. Back in the 1960s, I would watch this programme on a regular basis, as a small child. I had a lot of memorabilia such as the badges and toys, all long gone sadly. However, for an hour I could pretend to be a very cool super spy. Your observations are spot regarding the working relationships between the two men, which were closer to the excellent "Road" fllms with Hope and Crosby which I also loved. ("The Road To Utopia" remains an outright classic.) The same goes for "I Spy" with Robert Culp and Bill Cosby, before his reputation was permanently destroyed. At the height of its' powers, "The Man From UNCLE" was simply unbeatable. Only "The Avengers" with Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg came close to matching it.

Thank you for your comments Rob."Man from Uncle " did enjoy great success but it flamed out quickly in the third year. It seemed to switch from a cool persona in it's first year to the comedic slant in the 2nd and 3rd. Probably the fact that it was so popular with younger children may have made the producers try to cartoonize the violence even more. It was fun to watch and never was there any doubt that IIlya and Napoleon were in real danger. You mentioned 3 shows that I like and liked very much, The Avengers , Uncle and I Spy .

This show and I Spy were my favorites when I was a kid. I´m 46. The show ran in latinamerica during my early teen years. I was fascinated by Ilya Kuryakin. He's name alone was dazzling. It was the only TV show with a russian! That was something awesome to me. Russians were something obscure, the ever present hidden enemy of the americans. To have one on TV was something worth watching and certainly I get a lot of nostalgia watching this clip. Thanks for the upload...in full color!!

+tronyfree Here's a little background info on how the name was chosen. The correct Russian spelling of Illya's name should be "Ilya," with only one L. But series creator Sam Rolfe chose the name as an homage to Illya, the Greek character in Never on Sunday, and retained the Greek spelling. "Kuryakin" came from the Greek word for Sunday, "Kyriaki."

  • @tronyfree

+Linda S Thanks again Linda. It shows that they put some thought behind Illya's name.Rather strange,it feels like it's Russian but it actually has Greek origins.I did misspell Illya's name in the Napoleon Solo video (2 or 3 times) but I think I'll leave it.It doesn't stick out as much.Unless I get a barrage of people that pick up on it.They'll eventually work their way over to the Illya video and see that it's been corrected there. The series did have some interesting metamorpheses, going from black to color, and from serious to comic.I really liked the chat David and Robert had on the DVD extras, both self effacing, both respectful of each other, and both grateful for what the series did for them. They had good chemistry.

+AiramCarina That was abundantly clear from the series, Napoleon would be the James Bond womanizer and Illya would be the sidekick. As it progressed Illya started to develop this massive following of ...women....who liked his cool demeanor and golden locks ( I think???). The show is in constant reruns everywhere and is available on DVD.The movie wasn't half bad,I liked it.It walked that fine line between bringing in new ideas and linking to the TV show.In the last season it got a little silly with the parody, even though David McCallum and Robert Vaughn had a great chemistry and did the best they could with the material.

The movie SUCKED the Big One and you no one really wants to know what both David and Robert really think about the movie as it cannot be repeated in polite company.

Great video! Only one minor correction: The actress from "The Arabian Affair" is *Phyllis Newman*, not "Judy Carne". Otherwise, very well done!

Napoleon was suave and Illya was cool. Napoleon was flirty and easy and Illya was mysterious and crude toward women. It's not hard to see why a lot of people preferred Illya. But Robert Vaughn wasn't less of a lady-killer just because of that. They were both incredibly attractive men at their prime.

The series rode the James Bond craze for three years before it was cancelled. My feeling is that the writers managed to split the James Bond persona into two people, IIllya and Napoleon, and that way probably attracted more viewers .

I can agree with that. Illya and Napoleon do complete each other with the different looks, personalities and skill sets.

Of all the shows they're rebooting these days, WHY NOT THIS ONE?!?! I thought the recent movie did well enough to respark interest. I remember reading one of the books as a kid and wanting more. Like a PG James Bond, but better.

Hi Walt, it did very much so. You can see David McCallum shake the prop bomb as he slides off to jump. The show did veer into high camp towards the 3rd season.Maybe to deter from the fact that people were being shot at and dying. It was trying to straddle the huge following of it's young fan base and be more family oriented to it's violent roots in the spy genre. They probably shot themselves in the foot by doing that and their run ended after 3 seasons. Thanks for viewing.

Sorry Patrick, just a fan homage to the series. A quick look on KZread didn't turn up full shows either. I got mine at the local library , where they have a huge selection of old TV shows. Comments from other posters seem to indicate that this series is not aired too often, even on streaming networks.
