If you look at the John Wick series, there are many scenes that pay homage to Korean movies. This is ‘The Villainess (2017)’, a representative example of the motorcycle scene.

The main actor Won Bin, was already popular but this movie catapulted him to #1. However, he retired right after this movie, I believe he said it kind of F'ed him up psychologically. People find it a cool story to leave at the height of your fame, but also just wished he did more work. There's a lot of new Korean cinema and series that people are very interested in, but there's a lack of attention on a lot of these classics for YT reactions. For another classic slick Korean action movie, I'd recommend The Villainess, it has the most insane motorcycle chase/fight that hasn't been topped. For a newer action flick, The Ballerina on Netflix. * the foley edit with the celery and dialog about stabbing made me lol for the first time in a while from a YT video.

After seeing you guys squirm for the brutality in this movie, not sure if I still should recommend I Saw the Devil as the level of that (brutality) is about 10x more, minimum. I don't know how but S. Korean movies are able to depict things in a VERY real way, not super stylized, perfectly choreographed, flashy depictions you see in most Hollywood or Bollywood movies so things just feel / look hypep-real...anyways, looking forward to seeing your reaction to I Saw the Devil soon-!

It’s not the brutality or the depiction of the violence per se, but more so the depiction of violence done to innocent people within a hyper-real story context as opposed to a cgi cartoon world.

@@BluntReactionsBB well, the scene i particularly had in mind was when the Thai assassin had the scythe blade in the drug lord's mouth & the scene cuts to him pulling it out so for me it isn't necessarily against the innocents (also the brutality one's likely to squirm from in I Saw the Devil will be equally against the antagonist...) anyways as for the hyper-realism, lack of CGI is apparent but for me it's more so other factors like misses in knocking someone out (not perfectly choreographed), non-extravagant weapons (no chainsaw, machete - the Jason kind, etc.,) like knives, ag tools, workout gear around the house (hope i'm not giving too much away), & also 'real' looking supporting actors, wardrobe as opposed to everyone being above average looking in sleek outfit (John Wick comes to mind) set design (even seedy locations give off being well put together in Hollywood movies), well they all add up to achieving verisimilitude which S. Korean movies seem to excel at, wish I had discovered Korean cinema earlier!

I loved this film - I'd not long given up on USA media (pretty much) and had started to collect a lot of European stuff until I found Korean cinema - never looked back since. They do seem to be aiming at a bit of a more international audience now (I HOPE they don't start getting their better actors poached for the Spandex film industry) which is a little worrying but the stuff they do seems WAY better than what I used to be stuck with, and never seems to require a part 2, 3, 4 ad nauseum. Not seen an SFX and Spandex film for a long long time :P

We are trying to let the world know that there are some (at least two anyway) Americans that are willing to question it from equal ground. I love the YT World community because it provides an avenue for learning about other cultures and exposing myself to new ideas that help me continue to look closely at those biases.
