    Everyone should know the amazing story of this song - The Mamas and Papas were East coast based and packed up to come to Los Angeles. They literally wrote the song while traveling cross country in a car together. It epitomizes the dream shared by a whole generation of coming to the paradise that was California in the 60's. Too bad California will never be what it was then but this song will always remind us of the power of having positive ideals. I've always wondered who the flute player on the recording was. A marvelous contribution that forever remains anonymous.

    That's for sharing the back story. I reall enjoy the flute interlude. I bet the LP linear notes acknowledged just who was the musician. Yes. a whole lot of folks had "California Dreams" some realized them.

  • @georgeandrews6454

    @georgeandrews6454

    +creoleladee The music was performed by various members of The Wrecking Crew, a very talented group of studio musicians based in Los Angeles in the 1960's. Among the members were Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Larry Knetchel, and Leon Russell. Sadly, they seldom received official credit for the fabulous work they performed, as the record labels didn't want the general public to know that someone other than The Byrds, Sonny & Cher, or Simon & Garfunkel actually did the music for their hit songs. The record labels also did not want to pay royalties to the musicians; their only pay was union scale for the session work.

    David Kirby the only part not correct was they wrote this song while living in NY about missing LA, not while traveling. it was written in the middle of the night, john had a dream and woke up his wife in the middle of the night to help him write it. she loved visiting churches, and John hated that part of the song but left it anyway. they actually wrote the song while still part of the group the Journeymen, but never recorded it until they evolved into the Mamas and Papas with Denny and Cass. its possible they wrote some of the music or fine tuned it later while traveling, but it was at least mostly written in NY. and its nice to see someone recognize the Wrecking Crew!

    This is just a song that I would describe as sheer perfection. M&P had several hits but this has always been my favorite. It has transcended 5 generations. I had my nieces in my car (15 and 12 years old) in my car recently and this song came on and they both started yelling about how much they loved this song. Mama Cass had a beautiful voice and her life was cut short way to early.

We would rent bikes and ride up the Carmel Coast. It was beautiful. The other three times was Long field exercise in the Beautiful Mojave Desert. Unfortunately would not like to live in CALIFORNIA.

    Honestly, I love California so much even though I've never been there, meanwhile I just love the creative experiences from old guys who went to California or other places of United States: they are very my pride. "All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey..." what a sad appearance though, people still won't give up and continue going in their ways to their own dreams which are worthless, not something can be equaled to money; what a lovely moment like I'm in. My American Dream!!

    The first time I heard this song i was 12 yo in Beirut . I got goosebumps and a vision that I can't explain till today. I saw myself through the eyes of a person in a club surrounded by 3 other individuals dancing on that song. I couldn't see myself nor recognize my company as it was in a dark ambiance. When I wondered and asked myself why am i experiencing and seeing such a scene which is not a part of my memory nor past ,immediately the question was answered that It was my wish to hold to that moment forever. It keeps on leaving a pleasant feeling each time I hear the song u expectedly. Btw I Did not know at the time the song title nor the band name till California called me in 2001 Still to this day I do not have explanations to the vision or the mission of this journey . Anyway another dreamer.

    The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.
