The MAM Journals- Royal Enfield Super Meteor- A step forward?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I saw the Super Meteor at the Birmingham motorcycle live show in November 2022 and have been looking forward to riding one ever since . Kings Two Wheel Centre kindly let me borrow one for a few days and 300 miles. This video explores the specification of the new model and some of the differences between it and the other 650cc engined bikes that Royal Enfield offer . How did I get on riding the bike and what were my conclusions? Is the Super Meteor a step forward and a worthy addition to the 650 twin range?

Commenting from the States. Seems like a lovely modern version of a classic motorcycle. Practical, affordable, reliable, quick enough to be fun and an absolute looker. The fact that it will appear at the same time Harley discontinues its only "affordably priced" smaller cruiser, the evo sportster, makes it even better. The North American imports should come with a more rowdy exhaust to encourage sales, though...

Always great to hear from you ! The gearbox was nice and the bike rode well particularly using the low / mid range torque of the differently tuned engine . I am sure that there will soon be a lot of aftermarket accessories available too ! Personally I think the 650 is a great base for a custom build ..

I'm a hardcore cruiser rider. I mostly use them as touring bikes. They are the most comfortable motorcycles made. I've owned more than 40 of them since 1980. I got my first brand new motorcycle in 1980, and it was a Suzuki GS450L cruiser. I've put probably close to 800,000 miles on many cruisers, big, small, and mid sized. Never dropped one. I currently own a Kawasaki Vulcan 750 and a Harley Davidson Sportster 1200. Love them both. I hope the Super Meteor 650 comes to the U.S. They have way too much black on them for me, I like bright shiny paint, and lots of Chrome and polished aluminum. But I saw a bright blue one in a video, and I think it could be made to look very nice just by painting or powder coating the wheels and engine side covers silver. I'm not a fan of bikes that use the engine as a stressed member, and I don't care for the black wrinkle finish on the frame. One type of bike I have NEVER owned is a "crotch rocket", what I call a "sport bike". They seem to be made for nothing but reckless, irresponsible, and illegal riding on the street. They are designed for the track. There is no way I can handle the super low bars and super high rearset pegs on one of those things. Just sitting on a Kawasaki Ninja 1000RR (the RR stands for "race replica) while someone else held it up almost sent me to the chiropractor. More than just painful, it was an absolute torture rack. I do have a Royal Enfield UCE Bullet B5 500 single, converted from EFI to an Amal carburetor using a kit from Hitchcocks. I really like that bike, but have to stay very close to home with it because it has tube type tires, and a flat with tube type tires means a tow truck. Tubeless tires can literally save your life. I've almost been killed a couple of times when a tube blew out at highway speeds. It's kind of ridiculous when all you have are those paper thin tubes holding the air, while with tubeless tires you've got the super thick and reinforced tread and sidewalls holding the air. Cruisers are not designed for speed, handling, or better than average braking. They are designed for comfort. I would think the suspension would be a bit mushy, rather than hard. I just turned 64, and cruisers are now about the only bikes I can get my leg over the seat on. My favorite Royal Enfield of all time remains the original iron barreled 500cc Bullet. Unfortunately I was not able to buy one before they switched to the UCE engine and EFI. At least I was able to get rid of the EFI. Those are certainly not great touring bikes, but I have other bikes for that. The character of the old Royal Enfield 500 long stroke singles is wonderful. That wonderful THUMP THUMP THUMP they make is almost hypnotizing. I have ridden mine over 200 miles in one day, by riding over roads close to home more than once. The Meteor 650 is the first Royal Enfield that I think would make a good touring bike, and that I wouldn't be afraid to ride several hundred miles from home on. If only they would make at least one model without all that black on it. Motorcycles (except crotch rockets) are supposed to look good, and all that black just doesn't cut it.

My Fiancée and I have been waiting for these to come out. Last week we tried the Meteor 350 and the Super Meteor 650 back-to-back. I know this sounds a ridiculous comparison, but as most of the biking we enjoy these days is at 40/50/60mph we needed to try the little Meteor as I had the suspicion that it would meet our needs completely. Stepping up to the Super Meteor 650 the "premium" feel was obvious - except for the rear suspension which was jarring at slow speed. The little Meteor felt plush by comparison. Obviously, when "pushing on" the handling of the bigger bike would be far superior. But we just don't "push on" these days. The pillion provision on the Super Meteor (Celestial) was really good vs the little bike which she said felt cramped and uncomfortable. The weight of the Super Meteor 650 was a concern when pushing it around but is not a factor once underway. So, we are torn. Next, a test ride on the Classic 350 a day or two later then really put the cat amongst the pigeons 🙀 what a fantastic little bike 😁

Nice review, very clear and well toned and considered. Interesting to hear the thoughts of someone not used to 'cruisers', though I'm coming from the other direction, somewhat. I own a Triumph Speedmaster, but tried a Super Meteor yesterday. I love the Speedmaster and was only interested because it does have shortcomings: The 1200 engine gives only a 100 mile range (wondering where your next station is only 60ish miles after filling up I find very annoying!) and can be lumpy, simply because of the power you're controlling. The front suspension is short and bottoms out pretty regularly from the many MANY potholes in our roads. There are many beautiful details (like spoked tube wheels) that are somewhat impractical. The Super Meteor will clearly have twice the range and it proves to be a smoother experiencing requiring less feathering of the throttle and less use of the clutch to have an 'easy' ride. The suspension is firm (though as you observe, may improve with time) but it handled the holes better than the very low Speedmaster. I found the Super Meteor less 'like a cruiser' and more like a 'normal' bike, though, if that makes sense? The Speedmaster isn't really *very* cruiser-like compared to a Harley or such, but the Super Meteor is even less so. The forward controls are even less forward than the not-very-forward Speedmaster controls. The bucket seat feels even less 'buckety' than the Speedmaster. The bars are less swept back. This is not a *bad* thing, though, especially for those, that just want an 'easy' ride and not necessarily a cruiser, but I find my Speedmaster a more comfortable relaxing riding position. All things considered, I'm going to stick with my Speedmaster for now and see if another season of long rides with a short range and bouncing through potholes annoys me too much to overlook. As I say, I do *love* my Speedmaster, but trying a Super Meteor has really left me with a dilemma and much to consider.

Thank you for watching and making the time to comment . Your question , “is it a cruiser?” , is fair . I am not sure I am absolutely clear but it is the furthest I have had my feet forward on a bike in a while . It does feel like a low seat , conventional bike when you put both feet on the ground . I should try more of the current Truimph range . I had a couple of the modern classics a few years ago but drifted away when they changed dealer in Oxfordshire ..need to re-establish contact ..

Hi Michael. You hit the nail on the head regarding feet forward and handlebar position. I had a Vulcan 650. Handled beautifully. But, I found I was in a open clam like position. After a while my lower back really ached. I raked the handlebars back as much as I could and so moved the pegs to their most rearward position (bike has adjustable peg positions) and made a big difference. I just couldn’t get as comfortable as for example on my Bonnie, so ended up changing it. This bike looks lovely and like you, I am impressed with RE. If I ever considered this bike, I would look at that pegs/ bars geometry carefully. Great vid as always. Regards Den

In am right in the "silver hair" category rider. My current rides are a BMW RNineT and a 2019 Royal Enfield Interceptor. I love the Beemer for its handling, power and build quality, but it can be a bit of a handful at times. The Interceptor is my weekend relaxed ride bike, a role it fits very well and I have been pretty happy with it overall. Then, Bingo! RE comes out out with what I think is the absolute perfect design for a weekend cruiser. I am in the market for the Super Meteor as soon as it hits the streets. Farewell Interceptor, hello Super Meteor.

Thanks for this Micheal. I agree your views on the advertising, however having spent a bit of time in India over the last 20 years I can see this bike selling very well there. The mag wheel is really popular in India even classic bullets including the old iron head ones are frequently fitted with mag wheels by Indians . With both the unaffordable nature of Harley to many Indian folks and the closure of some of their branches a mid size affordable cruiser will fill a glaring gap in their market. Personally given the demographics of UK bikers I’m less certain that UK sales would be as high, but it looks a great quality bike for the price and as we age and need lighter bikes I can imagine those of us with knee problems enjoying a mid size feet forward ride. I put spoked wheels are likely to become an option for those who prefer a more traditional look.

Another great review which rather surprised me; I was expecting a tad more criticism of it - no particular reason other than my own (perhaps incorrect) prejudices. It certainly looked a well made product and I did like the styling. My concern would possibly be the need for a tad more power after some months of ownership. Lovely bit of razor sharp cynicism riding through Witney…..delicious.

@@flesz_ My local dealer did the first service, 500KMs, for 130 euros which included oil change and valve adjustment. The warranty is for three years which is one of the best in the business. The standard tool kit comes with the special tool to turn the crank to do future valve adjustments, so owner operator service is entirely possible. It is a relatively simple and easy engine to work on. Remove the gas tank and you have easy access to all the valves. The adjustment intervals are 5000kms. It is fuel injected so no carbs to synch or clean. I expect a lot of trouble free miles, especially after the motor fully settles in. I always use synthetic on my bikes and they rarely need any adjustment at valve time.

Hi Simon . Glad you enjoyed the review and thanks for commenting . My observation on the marketing was lighthearted . As you say RE are making bikes that sell well . Last time I looked they were selling over 700,000 a year ,which is significantly more than most European brands . In most parts of the world they sell to younger riders . The average age in the UK is 10 years older than the rest of the world ( 40 v 30) and our bike buyer average age significantly higher than that ! The young affluent Indian market is probably important to them . Just looks a little odd to us here in the UK ..😊

Oxfordshire definitely seems like it's turning into the Switzerland of car-hate, not to mention the new 'traffic filters' they are now using to try to implement their 15 minute city - but those 20mph limits in the name of 'clean air' that are popping up everywhere are ridiculous. Spending 33% longer on the road at 2/3rds speed - does not bear out mathematically. Bikers have been proving this is nonsense for years. As a general comment , which may give you some comfort the 650 twins are air and oil cooled ( not liquid) and they do run hot . When running in, I think it is helpful to let them cool down after a run and I stop every hour . If the bike is getting very hot - glowing exhausts etc you need to have it professionally checked over asap . Hope this helps

I'd like your 865. No this, though. I don't like feet-forward on two-wheelers. My 'car' is a Can-Am Spyder F3-S, the sports cruiser of the F3 range. That has feet-forward, although not stretched out. I like the set-up, but I'm not balancing the 'bike'. A 0-60 MPH time of slightly less than five seconds means it's a quick machine. 1330cc inline triple. The Super Meteor looks like a quality machine. I can see cruiser fans will like it, but for me, a crusier needs a big engine. Back in Portugal, where my F3-S is, I also have a Yamaha MT-01, a 1670cc air-cooled, four-valve per head V-twin. @@robertodebeers2551 I respect that . People get a lot of pleasure out of their old “Brit” bikes . And why not !

@@michaelmam Some of my rant was tongue in cheek, of course, and I hope I'm not a racist when I distrust the materials and workmanship of bikes coming from India. The Royal Enfield Bullet was sold for many years, and it was nothing to brag on. What I serious would like to see, and might buy, is a big single, better than the 441 Victor Special I rode for years, that honestly recaptures some of the fun of a thumper, yet with some modern touches for us old farts, like electric start, good lights, electronic ignition. But let it vibrate and have that bottom-end torque we used to love.

Thanks Michael, I’m double TKR with infektion survivor. Started riding at at age 72 = RE= Meteor 350. I love long distance riding. Here’s my first long distance ride on my Indian “Thumper” 380 km from Bangkok to northern Thailand our Dacha (cottage in Russian) kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZG13j5WyiZeZf7g.html Now, long distance rides and not enuff displacement WRY NECK and numb fingers. Also in my case. The nasty vibrations! Therefore I’ve decided to get a twin 650. Or BOXER like the BMW Motorrad R nine T. pure. Too pricey, though. OK - so what’s on offer here in THAILAND? Mid size cruisers: Honda REBEL, =RE= Super Meteor and Kawasaki Vulcan. I still like my 350 cruiser. Especially, the “heel-kicker” lever makes city lane-splitting, filtering a lot easier. =RE= as you know has launched the all-new SUPER METEOR 650. Price point less than the KAWASAKI Vulcan S. The resale value of the “Kawa” better than Royal Enfield. Yes! Service Kawasaki probably better, they have super clean air conditioned service centers the call SERVICE FACTORY. Hope you find a bike that suits your knees! I suspect the most important thing is that it is comfortable . You certainly don't need me to tell you but try as many as you can!
