It’s cool that lee Marvin earned a gold record for “wandering star”
Never given the recognition it deserved; a phenomenal Musical!
It was a good film. Somewhat different from the stage play, but the music is and was great. Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood literally made it a success. Both were great for the role. Who cares what critics said. I don't go by critics' opinions. The only opinion that counts, is my own. The ending was both funny and great. The bull charging into everything causing buildings to collapse.
One of my favorite movies ever...every scene, every song, every gag lands solidly! In fact, watching it now made me look up some info on it!
One of the best movies of all time. Couldn’t make it today

Cost so much it lost money. Jean Seberg was so talented. Too bad she died so young - driven to suicide, alas.
This was a great movie and the critics hated it. They don't make them like this anymore, and the actor's personalities are incomparable. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has a fairly large appearance and it is a truly funny film. I saw Lee Marvin in LA once and he was incredibly handsome, was wearing a suit and walking with military bearing - the whole world stopped to stare at him.
Great movie. I find myself singing these songs to myself then laughing when I think of the movie scenes.
I was 9 when I saw this movie in "Cinerama" at the Cooper Theatre in Denver, Colorado. I will never forget it. It is still one of the best movies I have ever seen. THANK YOU, for posting this awesome piece of movie history!

I do not recall Paint Your Wagon as ever filmed in Cinerama. The only one so filmed was How the West Was Won.

Born in 1960, huh? Me too. In general I dislike musicals but this film is one of my all time favorites. Loved it as a child and still do many years later.
One if my favorite musical films. Alan Lerner is a theatrical hero if mine. His lyrics cannot be equalled. ..and as a producer he always got his way.
I served coffee to Lee Marvin in 1976 when he visited Southern Cross Hotel in Melbourne Australia. He said "Coffee" that was it no other conversation. I was 18 years old and thought he was grumpy but it was 6:30am. Love this movie yes.
In 1969 I had somehow won a sound tack LP from the movie BEFORE I ever saw the film. So I had memorized all the songs. I have seen this movie many times. It is a great movie. Marvin and Eastwood do their own singing. The movie was made when Hollywood was at the peak period of both the musical and the western. The songs and the scenery evoke the feeling and optimism of the time, and also the isolation and loneliness of being so far from home. The costumes, the horses and all the supporting cast were great.
I lived outside North Powder, a tiny town (then less than 300 people) just north of Baker (now officially Baker City) and was just a child when the movie production arrived. It was unreal and like an invasion. The park in Baker was turned into a campground of "hippies" as they were called. My eyes must have been as big as Frisbees because we had never seen anything like it. It didn't last long but it was talked about for years. Everyone had a "I saw Lee Marvin" story, etc. No one knew Clint Eastwood then as we would later.
Jean Seberg was so lovely. Such a sad, tragic end.

She died of a drug overdose. She brought it on herself.
I went to see Paint Your Wagon in 1969 on a date with my boyfriend at the time (whose name I can't remember now!). He hated it, but I thought it was wonderful and I still love it all these years later.

Same! Watching it right now and every minute of it is perfection!
One of the great movies ever!
Paint Your Wagon and Jeremiah Johnson are my two favorite movies in my 83 years. Mariah by Harve Presnell a great song as well.
I recall that the critics savaged this musical when it debuted, but it was a wild success and continues to be to this day. Meanwhile, who remembers the names of its critics?

Not only that, sailbad, but the great Lee Marvin song, Wandrin Star, bumped Let It Be out of first place in the UK. It didn't do too well on this side of the Atlantic, unfortunately.

Not sure but I’m am sure they came from No Name City🤣🤣🤣
By the way... the closest town to the filming site is Baker City, OR. I was there in 2001, and their town museum has a model of the whole town of "No Name City." They actually used "hippies" as "gold miner" extras. They had the look. The museum docent at that time remembers all the "hubbub" surrounding the filming of the movie. The filming site is way out of town in the mountains, so you'd have to ask at the National Forest HQ how to get out there, but it is accessible via forest roads.
My grandfather had this on VHS when I was a kid. I must have watched it a hundred times. I didn't know anything about it being a critical failure. I just knew that men, this vision of masculinity, was painted on the screen as being both beautiful and desperately needing women. :) I knew anything was possible, including failure, and that love was bigger than I could imagine, but maybe not as permanent as I would like.
I was a teenager and me my buddies couldn't wait to see the newest Western in town. We sat their on the edge of our seats as Clint sang 'I Talk to the Trees'. Wait a minute. That didn't happen. Ever.
This is one of my favorite movies and watch it every 2 weeks... just love Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood and Jean Seberg... Love the music!!!!! Does anyone know who the choir or singers were in this movie?? I'm guessing Nelson Riddle Orchastra's.
Most underrated movie ever.
A very memorable movie for me - was my first experience screening 70mm film, in the days when movies were movies.

Great movie ⭐️
Great musical arrangements from Nelson Riddle. He wrote all those fine swingers for Nat, Frank, Dean, etc., but his ballad writing and film score chops were superb as well.
The reason why Paint Your Wagon has been such a successful movie over the years,it's the great cast and the familiar songs they sing we have all grown up listening to for well over 53 years now. I know all the songs, how they are sung,by heart. It is really my favorite movie ever.
I've been to the location where "No name city" was. Nothing but grass now but very pretty spot.

Yeah, per the Park Service they had to remove the city when filming was done...what a shame, I bet it would have been a popular tourist site.
Have always loved this movie :)
One of my favs!!🎶🤗
Thank you so much for this upload. I have looked for this particular "making of" for many years. It isn't even on the Paint Your Wagon dvd.
Born and raised in Baker City, Oregon. Was a kid when they filmed this. Great memories and my favorite movie ever.

Cool. Stayed in town for a few days while with the Glenn Miller Orchestra some years ago, at the motel that housed some of the cast/crew. Beautiful area for sure.
Thank you very much for posting this incredible document !
Recently I was driving State Highway 49 along the North Fork of the Yuba river in the Tahoe National Forest and Came into the town of Sierra City, then I saw the Sierra Buttes which are directly north of the town. I thought this is it, this was the vision the producers of the film were looking for.
EXCELLENT! Thank you!
The critics missed the point big time & considered it a low-brow musical so they bagged it .. but we loved it
best film ever....
This was a massive hit in Australia. Everyone loved it. Only watched it the other day on DVD on an 8ft wide movie screen. Wish there was Blue Ray release. Interesting for this movie was what CAMELOT should have been, a lusty tale, instead CAMELOT was rather flat except for the music. Richard Harris was confined unfortunately.
I wish they would have put this little piece as an "Extra" on the DVD. That would have been wonderful. Perhaps, if this movie ever makes it to Blu Ray, (As it should, it does *NOT* deserve the reputation it has....) maybe this will be on the Blu Ray.
Lee was magnificent the part was made for him a real outback character
great post, thanks
@SacredArts1 Agreed and never trust the critics. They have their own reasons for coming to their own conclusions, and they are rarely autonomous or independent. There is a lot to like about this film from the humor to the songs to the melancholy drama of the full story arc to the great landscape setting. It gets a bit farcical at the end, but its a good tale, well told, and stands up well four decades later. A must see for any cinephile and fan of comedic western musicals~!
This is the only Musical you can like and not be gay. Not that there is anything wrong, but this movie was one of the best you can see. Tells a story about the real heart of Lee Marvin. "Wandering Star"
Great songs, great movie.

Yes it is. I am always touched by Jean Seberg - she was one of Eastwood's many affairs (during the making of this film), and it hurt her. Between her mental issues, FBI investigation and blacklisting, and abusive husband, she would only live another 10 years, committing suicide in 1979 in France... From Wikipedia: .."On September 8, nine days after her disappearance, her decomposing body was found wrapped in a blanket in the back seat of her Renault, parked close to her Paris apartment in the 16th arrondissement. Police found a bottle of barbiturates, an empty mineral water bottle and a note written in French from Seberg addressed to her son. It read, in part, "Forgive me. I can no longer live with my nerves."[44] In 1979 Seberg's death was ruled a probable suicide by Paris police[1] but the following year additional charges were filed against persons unknown for "non-assistance of a person in danger".Romain Gary, Seberg's second husband, called a press conference shortly after her death where he publicly blamed the FBI's campaign against Seberg for her deteriorating mental health. Gary claimed that Seberg "became psychotic" after the media reported a false story that the FBI planted about her becoming pregnant with a Black Panther's child in 1970. Romain Gary stated that Seberg had repeatedly attempted suicide on the anniversary of their child's death, August 25. Seberg is interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse, Paris, France." Very sad end to her life.

After this film concluded reserved seat engagements in larger markets, most of the songs were cut for the general release. The songs were restored for home video (VHS, DVD) release.
Well im going up there next summer since im only 400 miles away from site think it will be a great trip in so many ways....
The chorale arrangements are done by Roger Wagner Chorale. Before he became an actor Harve Presnell had been a lead singer in the Roger Wagner Chorale
Can't understand why the movie critics were so scathing of this movie. Loved some of the songs, especially "They Call the Wind Maria"
I have to get there!!
I was under the impression that most of the songs were removed from the movie when it went into general release. Always found that odd. Glad I was wrong about that.
I live 15 minutes away from where No Name City was originally built.
So, how did they run the horses through the river, with all of the rocks and unlevel bed, and not have them twist and ankle or break a leg? Was that paved and then the water run through so it was smooth for them? I know no one here can likely answer it, but I've always wondered if the horses were okay in that scene.
Several songs from the original stageplay were removed because of all the changes in the storyline for the screenplay, but then they also wrote several new ones to match with the new story.
My favorite musical, & probably the most realistic. None of these warbling idiots, but real people trying to sing, except Harve Presnel who is a good singer.
Was there an extra on the set of Paint Your Wagon by the name of Ray Vincent (from CA)? He told me years ago he and some friends were extras on the set....he was one of the people painting the sign (name of the town) in the film...then later as they needed miners in the background.
Love this movie 👍 🥃
Don't forget, Clint Eastwood also sang in this. Both guys not known for their singing.
Great movie 👍
@talkinbroadway I saw this film several times in it's 2nd, 3rd and 4th runs and throughout the years in revivals. I've never seen it cut. In fact, it never was cut.
Hello, This doucment is amazing, is there a longer version ? Where did you find it ? On a DVD ? Thanks !
I will never not think of "The Simpsons" parody of this movie. 😂
i grew up with seeing this film quite a few times during the 1970s no real plotline but the actors made up for it along with the photography.
I love "Hand Me Down My Can Of Beans".
In those days we thought we could still be daring and free and go to places unknown in search of happiness... Miles and miles away from the 'Nam...
Hi I bought this movie on Amazon. Don’t have it on my I pad. Do I have to rebuy it. Can someone help me.
I doubt that we'll see a remake; a Western musical set in mountainous Oregon wouldn't seem like a worthwhile commercial bet to most studio executives. Who would you want to see in the starring roles?
did you get there?
Did Lee Marvin stay in the "Long Long Trailer" (from 1954 Lucy and Desi Movie) while filming Paint Your Wagon?
what town would that location be closest to. Sparta?? Seems they would have used that town instead because of the ghost town there.
Can somebody please tell me who narrated this video ?. I wish to contact them......
4:50 - Lee is carrying a can of Olympia beer, a local brewery. I saw its horseshoe logo when he sets the can down.
The movie definitely is DUE for a remake -- even more lusty, fabulous than the first!! Great video. Thanks for posting it. Do you have any more?
Jean, how did that Black Panther thing work our for you?
Paint your wagon is one movie they should remake! having Hugh Jackman playing Lee's part and Ryan Reynolds play Clint Eastwoods maybe Katty Perry do the female lead or - Taylor Swift They could fill other parts with todays star singers Ed Sheeran for example and throw a bunch of comedians in the mix like Kevin Hart - Maybe Robert Kelly as the blacksmith Bill Burr? I think Seth Macfarlane would be good Rotten Luck willie Maybe Clint could make a cameo
Cliff Eastwood?
Was "Columbus" Michael Crawford?
4:56 I would have wanted that woman's job, the one standing behind Jean Seberg.
We were booked out of the latest action film. My boyfriend chucked a tantrum so I saw this film was available and talked the whinging bastard into going in. Pouting bottom lip! Thankfully they had a great opening in the film. I didn't look at b/f, didnt give a rats if he liked it or not (turned out later the whining b------d did) Me? I loved it. Took my dad to see it.
Jean Seaburg was so pretty
Hugh Jackman, of course, as the Clint Eastwood
shooting location looks very rugged
but does lee marvin do any marvelous splits??
I wonder how much gold they found while making the movie ?
