The Majorca 312 Experience ! A Celebration of Cycling & Endurance !

Спорт

Today is the big one - a festival of cycling covering 312km +4500m elevation in the beautiful Island of Majorca. Most certainly an iconic event in an Island that loves cyclists ! A massive challenge for any cyclist.
We hope this video will provide a helpful insight into this incredible event and experience, with contrasting scenery and terrain, demanding different skills and fitness - including insight on what I ate and how I paced it.
Massive thanks to Moray at All Things Ride for the my invite to the 312 and accommodation. I should add that I paid for Jayne and also a supplement for a larger room.

Honestly Phill, your filming and editing of these cycling videos is bordering on Oscar territory. Absolutely superb video, gave a real feeling of the day. As for that 1st climb, talk about packed to hilt

That’s really really generous of you to say so Tony 🙏 - I’ve enjoyed the process of capturing the event, and the idea is to put the viewer into the event to provide a good feeling for the experience. That first climb was indeed proper chaos - albeit slow motion chaos if there’s such a thing ! 😅

I rode with you for a while (I was one of the guys you and the guy in the pink shirt were towing) - I tried to return the favour and tow you back to that group (I had 312 top, ride + white helmet you pass me in the video around 9 minutes) but you're already done way too much on the front. Really appreciate the tow and the video - great work.

Hi Nick - and apologies for the delay in my reply. I thought I’d already replied to you!! Indeed I did burn myself out a bit for a while working with the guy in the pink - and I do remember you trying to tow me back on on after I ebbed away - so thanks massively 🙏. I needed to reset a bit - I find it tough to stay in the pace lines for extended time on the flat - but appreciate you trying 💯 Thanks ever so much for your very kind comment -and hope to see you at La Marmotte or another Fondo in the not too distant future. Nice work on a great time time for the 312 BTW 💪✊

Thanks ever so much Scott 🙏 - that’s hugely appreciated - was indeed a massive edit 🥵 (harder than riding the event 🤣). For sure - an epic challenge - and one to prepare for. My max ride distance so far this year was 155km (and +3500) - so wasn’t sure I was ready. But the pacing and eating is what got me through 👍

Great video, I didn't spot myself ;) As you say the thing that amazed me was A) The organisation was brilliant B) The local support. I can't imagine this kind of event happening in the UK, on a Saturday, closing the roads, where the locals come out and actually encourage you by cheering you on. It was amazing!

Cheers Marco 🙏 - and for sure, it’s a really beautiful island for cycling and to explore. Riding early is best to avoid the traffic (bikes and cars). Sa Calobra and Puig Major are both excellent climbs - as is the climb out of Soller and the coastal road 🤩. All well within your tool box when back to fitness. Say hi to Inge 👍

A very honest assessment Phill, not sure after watching your video whether it makes me want to do the 312 more or less. Distance & elevation would be the challenge but the sheer amount of riders on the road & the traffic jams would put me off. Like you said it would probably help the pacing plan but all the queues at the feeding stations would be a real pain & maybe spoil the enjoyment. Chapeau for getting round.

Cheers Ian 🙏- and so pleased this was helpful to you💯. It is a slow first 60-70km but the atmosphere is incredible as is the organisation and the scenery. It’s also a massive challenge to different cyclists for different reasons - I found the flatter final 150km more of a challenge (even staying in the pace line was hard work) but the climbing half easier . But plenty of events out there, and I’ll see how busy La Marmotte is this year

Having just recently got some assiomas and translating power from training on Zwift to the outdoors, I can definitely see how effective knowing your power zones and riding to them could be on an event like this. It’s certainly transforming my outdoor riding, managing my efforts, pushing and backing off where necessary. Perfect for gauging your effort for this.

  • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy

Nice one Mat - I love the Assiomas, and to your point following the lab tests, all I did on this event (after the initial traffic jams) was ride to 200-230W and recover on the downhills. Oddly enough riding in the pacelines was the toughest - even at the back, because it was very surgy. But the power meter will make a massive difference to pacing your efforts on both the short rides and long 💯👍

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy The only difficulty I’m finding with outdoor workouts is finding the right roads to do the session. I live in the Wirral and I can manage short anaerobic or vo2 max efforts but even then I struggle for a decent stretch of 5 minute road without having to stop or slow right down for traffic lights/junctions etc. longer sweetspot/threshold intervals I’m finding I’m going into wales to find some climbs but even there is no climbs longer than 15 minutes. I think it’s going to be trial and error finding the right roads.

Oh, those surges to catch the pack...always worth it although you need to burn some matches ;) I am glad that you experience a great ride there (happy for someone who has lived there for some time haha) Hoping to go there next year for the experience! : ) PS: Stunning time, under 12h! Congrats!!

Thanks ever so much Dan - this really is extremely motivating for me, and hugely appreciated 💯 🙏 When I set off after them I thought it would be pretty quick to latch on…. But time seemed to standstill - but as you say worth it. The road gets quite grippy after the town, and the draft made a massive difference. Was an incredibly well run event, and an awesome experience - so hope you enjoy getting back out there and completing the 312 next year 👍💪

Thanks James 🙏 - that’s hugely appreciated . You’re a very strong cyclist and I can imagine very accomplished runner . I’m tempted to try a fell run or two, but the cycling is so much easier for the body to recover from (I found that as I got past 40) the aches and pains and tightness through the muscles really impeded me!

just did my first Fred at the weekend and found the beta fuel powder and chews did the trick over 8 hours, had a couple of cliff bars and a caffeine gel for taste change, but carrying 2 750ml bidons with 3 sachets worth and a spare 3 packets allowed me to consume much more than previous nutrition strategies. Rode in Majorca a decade ago but never in the 312...

Congratulations on completing the Fred, Global Nomad 💪💯. If you can do that you can do anything on a road bike event 👌. Agreed - I had 2 big bottles with the beta fuel and a spare sachet (plus electrolytes ) - and drinking your carbs is easy and makes a huge difference. I’m planning a little video on this subject

My largest ride this year was the Strade Bianche (155km and +3500 - albeit on gravel), so this was more about the pacing and the eating - and digging in the second half when it got a bit tough . Hope you remain on the road to recovery ❤️‍🩹

I’ve never seen anything like it, Chris 🥵. The tunnels to the Puig Major descent were ok - because the speed was low. Generally if you kept to the right and let the faster riders past on the left - all was ok. But there are crashes each year on the descents

i can’t see a reliant robin beating your time. in a head to head race the trotter’s van would be nowhere. two wheels good, three wheels bad (to misquote “animal farm”). have you noticed fellows like dylan johnson are using clip-on aero-bars for super long gravel events? saving 45mins+ over equivalent distance of the 312?

  • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy

    @BikeRacingWithoutMercy

I’ll keep an eye out for Del Boy and Rodney on my next event, FFF! 🤣But 2 wheels definitely best 💯 . I hadn’t realised that. But I do find it comfortable to ride a lot on the drops, so although not as aero it’s better than on the hoods. Doesn’t surprise me the time saving - the drag is such a massive factor
