Yes Scofield uses pentatonics a lot to create angular lines

Fantastic playing Μikko! It’s very similar to minor 6th pentatonic, in a minor key instead of the root you play major 7th and you transform major b6 pentatonic. It seems easier to me to think in that way because both pentatonics have melodic minor sound. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Okay... I'm 7 minutes into this 27 minute video and I've already hit the like button!👍 I've always found the melodic playing of Canadian guitarist Sonny Greenwich to sound very modern. This major b6 pentatonic scale brought his playing to mind right away. I'm not sure of Sonny Greenwich's approaches or concepts... but the major b6 pentatonic will surely help to get my own head around its' unique properties. Thanks for yet another fantastic lesson, Mikko! Canadian guitarists are best! 🇨🇦Lol P.S. Time to dust off my copy of Jerry Bergonzi's book on pentatonic scales and put it back into rotation. Does it ever stop?! I need a few more lifetimes to start scratching the surface. Thanks again Mikko... your lessons on youtube are helping in what has become some most difficult times for myself and many others. 🙏🌿🕊

Thanks. I have actually never really checked out Sonnys playing. He is (was) a Montreal guy, right? Did he make an album with Ed Bickert?

@@Mikkokosmos I'm not 100% sure about an album with Ed Bickert... but it seems a very likely possibility. He did release a live album with Kenny Wheeler which was quite popular. He's a Montréal area guitarist with a large discography. Unfortunately many of his albums are no longer available. He was gigging locally up to about 10 or 15 years ago. If you do look into his recordings just be aware that his son, Sonny Greenwich Jr is also a guitarist (best known for his rock outings with the band "Bootsauce").

Guitar Pro launches pretty quickly and it allows writing down guitar stuff quite fast. At least it feels much faster than Sibelius 6. I've been using Guitar Pro for a couple months now (after nearly 20 years of Sibelius), and I've started watching guitar videos with KZread and Guitar Pro open side-by-side. I press pause on the video, and write down an idea snippet in Guitar Pro. This has felt useful at least in the small level of my amateur jazzy'ish endeavors. I haven't gone back to previous notes that often, but a little bit.

Mikko which book, among these two, would you recommend for pentatonic patterns? Also I realise that in a melodic minor environment it’s better to use minor 6th pentatonic and major b6 pentatonic .In that way, you won’t sound scalar and predictable..

I definitely recommend Bergonzi's book. If nothing else so for the audio examples. Bergonzi's demonstrations of the different pentatonics are amazing

Do you also know how to play the trumpet? I tried to teach myself but I was relegated to playing long tones for the better part of a year. I guess this is what they call "paying your dues".

I used to as a kid. Thought I would pick it up again after all these years but it's sooo hard 😐 I should probably play long notes for a year at least
