The moment she mentioned the pallet knife, I had to double back. And then I had to double back twice. I thought I just spaced out, but no, she just instantly switches. She even mentions "the paints are still out" right before, which makes you think she's gonna do something with the painting and not just start... stabbing herself. The artist becomes the canvas indeed.

This series is starting off a lot harder than TMA did, the talking computer is super creepy. It's also a really creative way to get the "statements" read out for the podcast format!

Yeah, the computer reading out bits dredged up memories of HAL9000 towards the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The scene where David Bowman is ripping out his memory cores and HAL is pleading with him to stop but there's no emotion in his voice makes it all the more terrifying.

Something interesting to note is unlike in TMA, there isn't any obvious way for The Eye to pull the story out of people and make it more coherent, and yet the stories are still well articulated. Could be a creative liberty, but given the attention to detail we got from TMA I'm gonna keep an Eye out. Edit: After rewatching the last episode and this one, I did catch another detail: The Eye may not be there for the statements being taken, but it could well be watching the OIAR staff. All the audio we've been listening to MUST be getting picked up by something, like the tapes from TMA. The computers are one option despite their age since they can somehow do text to speech, but its hard to imagine they can pick up everything we've heard. My guess is its security cameras. We know from TMA that The Eye and its avatars can use them and alter them however they want and the sound that plays whenever a new piece of audio starts sounds like an electronic device switching on.

The eye is involved, but it doesn't feel like we're the eye anymore. The biggest factor being- The Eye listens but doesn't understand. Only one entity understands and that's the web. So, I'm guessing while we are the Web this time. The Web and The Eye are once again working together.

@@Coolingtulip The Medium doesn't really matter, it's about the fear it evokes and what it represents. Like bones, sometimes they are of the flesh, sometimes they are of the end. I'm basing this off of TMA: Ep 80 With that being said though, I see what you may mean, and I think that Ink5oul could surely be of the spiral, like the-worker-in-clay. The desire for self perfection on the story giver screams Flesh. Though the delusion with the acid, I think it might have been a delusion where she didn't know it was acid, screams spiral. I suspect that Smirks 14 will be much less defined in this series and that we will be seeing a lot of the bleeding-together or the fears.

As someone who watched archives, I know about the fears. So far, the fears seem…. Blended. This one seemed similar to the Flesh, but also had hints of the stranger in it. Well they were never one thing. Smirke made up the Entities out of whole cloth to invent a system of balance for Fear. It tracks that we shouldn’t really be able to clearly differentiate them, as most of the clear-cut stuff in TMA came out of factions who modeled themselves off of Smirke’s theories. If Smirke didn’t have the theories or they didn’t get as big in this timeline, then we get different power distinctions

I’ve seen this single occurrence in this one comments section already chocked up to -Flesh -Eye -Slaughter -Stranger -Spiral I would definitely agree that they’re more blended than before. Sure, TMA had plenty of statements that were a bit ambiguous too, but it feels different this time.

This episode is out here giving me so much hope that they are going to give my beloved Flesh it’s due. As a trans person we need more psychological Flesh stories.

The primary flesh avatar in TMA convinced body builders to let him experiment on them first and then during the apocalypse his body horror flesh garden included people with eating disorders and plastic surgery addicts, amongst other things.

Oh damn her story really brings back the Agnes lore. The wax for faces and melting and reshaping peoples faces...

With regards to Sam's POV, this reminds me of this old minidoc about people who are paid to moderate facebook content, which in turn leaves them with secondhand PTSD.

Theory dumping/spoilers for TMA -The TMP employees cannot quit their job, similar to how the TMA employees couldn't. -Sam will either become an Eye avatar if possible, or he will develop a connection with Jon. -Jon and Martin are the TTS voices, this is the dimension they moved to after MAG 200. They'll likely have a similar narrative function to Gerry Keay. -Gwen is related to Elias Bouchard (the original, not Jonah Magnus). -Gertrude may be alive in this timeline if the institute was successfully burned down. -The two mentions of symbols (The Red Canary thread and the Tattoo statement) likely have to do with a cult. -The third TTS voice will be Elias since the died in the panopticon.

I have to wonder if they're eventually going to introduce a taxonomy of the fear entities that *doesn't* align perfectly with Smirke's Fourteen. Even in the TMA timeline, Gerry identified that classification system by name and specifically mentioned that it was the one he preferred, which definitely implies that there *were* multiple theoretical models available.

I’ve heard people say that OIAR are Web-aligned, which is reasonable, but I also feel like there’s possibly an Extinction element in there. The computers are - despite their age - digital, and the Entities very rarely interact with that. The Extinction, though, does involve stuff like outdated technologies (I know that the old computer one, Sergei Ushanka’s statement, was meant to be Spiral but that one is definitely a grey area). Plus, Jon and Jonah (he’s definitely Augustus) coming back through the text-to-speech system seems to imply some Extinction themes of what comes after The End.

You have to remember as well the web was influencing the Archivist. In his domain he could actually use modern cameras so.....

So far, I like how they’re making it more like an audio drama with a fairly big cast from the start and having them talk with each other and work together. Archives didn’t really start doing that until later; a lot of the first season was just Jon sitting by himself recording statements with someone else occasionally dropping by

I missed Flesh statements so much! The creepy obsession with perfection and self-improvement. It feels so good to have more to listen to!!

When i heard "just a quick touch up" my stomach dropped. Dear god.

For people that don’t know about the ARG, alchemy is very important. It played a large part in the ARG and is now showing up in story. The OIAR logo is an inverted philosopher’s stone, Ink5Soul’s account showed the alchemical symbol for salt that symbolizes body and perfection, and it mentions them having serpent tattoos and Mercury is symbolized by serpents and symbolizes the mind.

We all know that the series itself is incredible, but I want to say that the music for the new series is just stellar. Such a departure from the creepy atmospheric music into a big symphonic sound.

I just caught that Gwen's last name is Bouchard and oooooooooo I'm so very intrigued

Fascinating how the Fears are presenting, now. While this seems fairly primarily Flesh, it’s not as explicitly gruesome as usual, and seems almost Spiral-like as well. I wonder if Ink 5oul will be coming up again! They seem like a possible Avatar. Although it’s hard to say if they’re strictly Flesh aligned; I’m also getting elements of Slaughter (the dubstep and the torturous tattooing) and Spiral (affects the minds of their clients?). This is all assuming things can still be categorized like before. 🤔

I was thinking Beholding for Ink5oul myself, live streaming and focused on the presentation aspect. We don't know much about how the Lietners were made and the statement mentions arcane symbology research, so Ink5oul might be channeling the Flesh/Spiral/Slaughter regardless of affinity. Also the whole constantly observing something to the point it unnerves you and you need to fix it as an artist feels very close to the Eye for me but I *absolutely* agree that this reeks of the Flesh as well!

Thinking about how they are classifying the statements- they start with a main theme and then have sub-categories that are interchangeable and subjective . I feel like that’s the new focus of the fears; to personalise and run together.

God listening to these statements just makes me grieve the fact we dont get to hear Jon's posh British accent in denial and spewing paranoia onto a tape recorder anymore, but as they say- the show must go on!

I have a ridiculous theory: So, if the fears have travelled to this timeline with Norris, Chester and Augustus, and there were no fears there before, or they manifested differently (evidence: Location of the Institute, its supposed purpose to study gifted adults and children. Problem with this theory: The existence of the OIAR, the muddled fears dichotomy, especially in this ep, with the influence of both the Flesh and Stranger) I would theorize that the fears might try to establish new avatars, because before they are able to spread fear through their servants, they have to create avatars. So, what if each of the statement givers are people who the fears are trying to transform into avatars? I probably should wait a few more episodes to find more examples (or be proven wrong) but with this particular statement giver you can see how they were the one to be given the power to modify their own body, like an avatar would (though there was also Ink5oul, who definitely had something supernatural going on with the leaking tattoo, which throws a wrench in this theory-however, there was apparently a casting call for a tattoo artist character, so maybe they will return as a newly made avatar)

I really love the new intro music. It echoes the motifs of TMA's opener, but seemingly on a much grander scale. Which is fitting, considering how much the scope of the world has expanded. I was a big Magnus fan and I'm so excited to see where this goes :D

Instead of the eye spying on workers, its cameras, i think at least. So far this has been really good and im really looking forward to hearing more of it. I am finding it hard however to separate it from tma, in the way where im trying to not expect the same storyline and characters and fears. But im also looking forward to seeing how it expands from the original story.

Wait if Gwen is a Bouchard, then would she perhaps be a descendant of the original Elias Bouchard. Who went on to having a kid, in this reality where he wasn't taken over by Magnus. But the Institute burnt down in 1999, so Magnus would have already been in Elias's body, so was he in another body?
