I'm feeling so bad for Agnes. She didn't have a choice. And it looks like she only wants to be normal, and not to hurt anyone. She saved the boy in the uphill house and only wanted to kiss her "boyfriend" before she dies :( Good chance that it was her first kiss ever (since burning people alive makes romance kind of difficult)

And at the very least her bf doesn't seem to have minded as much as he....really had a right to. Doesn't even seem to regret it. I think that is what brings a sense of cathersis to this particular tragedy. He suffered but didn't mind giving Agnes a pleasant last memory...or at least, what he hoped would be. I have a suspicion she deeply regretted taking that kiss...

I feel like "replacing" him has a different meaning. He said it like he's chosen Jon particularly to be the archivist? Like Jon was a special piece, a rare object that hard to replace. Or he's been changed and gone through some phases to provide some spesific need to him, like it would be hard to find another person and do it all over again. Am I thinking too much? I can't help but be amused by the way Jon sounds so professional in all of the main recordings but in the supplementary ones he's just like "JFC TIM I DON'T KNOW BUT YOU MIGHT BE A MURDERER!"

Such a sad tale for both Jack and Agnes - I get the feeling that whatever Agnes actually is, she really does just yearn for a normal life.

Judging by the description in the beginning, I'd say she is probably an Other (what we saw in Anglerfish, Breeckon and Hope, the circus, taxidermy, etc). Lifeless eyes, only speaks in key phrases, not really able to act natural, _not_ a person. I mean, that has Other-people written all over it if you ask me

@cak01vej I feel calling her a pyrokinetic is being generous. More like a bottle of oil. We haven't seen any members of the Lightless Flame actually exude fire in a meaningful way, they either use themselves as fuel to make a very potent fire or they bring weak flames wherever they go. Waiting until they are needed to fuel a ritual. It's unfortunate...I think she knew that destiny. And was too far in to escape it. I don't think I could even bring myself to be mad at her for trying to get a kiss before her time. Especially when he asked first....he at least doesn't seem to have minded either. I do hope she finds peace and doesn't simply burn forever. Even she doesn't deserve that.

My hot take is that Agnes is the Lightless Flame dressed up as a human, sort of like Michael the distortion. But I think she's been doing it much longer, long enough that she came to enjoy it and regretted when she could no longer play that role.

I think she is more the avatar, and was chosen as one before she even had a choice. It's why she likes the novelty of ordering coffee and having a boyfriend. And honestly, probably the reason she couldn't escape the fate she was all too aware of. She was already bound to her role....and it seems the cult around her wanted to save her. Back on hilltop though I feel like she just gave him a quick peck on the cheek, to save him. Here she put both hands on his face, pulling him into what I can imagine as a long emotional kiss (many characters with powers of some kind have their powers linked with their emotions hence her powers being stronger). She knew that she was going to die, or at least no longer exist in a way she could pretend to be human anymore, so in a way she may have been not only kissing our statement giver goodbye, but also all hopes she had for being 'normal'.

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes. Agnes is such a cool and interesting character, and the idea of her going on dates with this random human barista just because she wanted to have fun is so cute and different from most of other statements. And the guy kissing her and not regretting it even though he basically lost half of his face? What a legend

This reminded me of flame Princess and Finn's relationship from AT and i think this was cute

YES, I was thinking the same thing, this episode has to be inspired by Adventure time, it feels so similar- It could be a coincidence of course but if so then this is a big one.

NO I FEEL SO BAD. Like shit, this almost made me cry :( I remember feeling kinda happy when Agnes died earlier in the series, after I’d heard all that’d happened with the freaky tree and the construction worker. I rlly thought that the guy running the home had just genuinely been a good person and Agnes had been a curse/his downfall. The was such a bittersweet ending, I love the way this guy described Agnes and the time he spent with her. The way that they’d go on dates that she only seemed to go on to enjoy being around him and especially the part where he said he didn’t think he’d’ve done anything differently had he the chance to go back. I wish it had worked out for them, and the house on hilltop road had been left alone.

Even in the episode where Jon went into the tunnels there was evidence of the entities fighting. He was drawn down by whatever decided to use the chalk, and shoo'd away by the entity/avatar that actually lived in the labyrinth. It rather makes me happy to see honestly, to know humans aren't just swept along by an illuminati. They're actually agents that matter in the world. A bit like ours.

Now that Jon knows nobody can leave, he's gonna pull that "do it or I'll quit" thing all the time, lol

The tear was so hot that it burned him even through all the burning already going on. If it had been his, it'd probably have been unnoticeable.

The more I learn about Agnus, the less I think she's actually bad. Dangerous yes. She is most definitely dangerous. But there is a difference between being dangerous and being bad. Something can be dangerous and still be good. That being said I don't know if I would exactly call Agnus good. With everything that's going on I doubt anything is really truly good here. But I think that Agnus is fighting against something that is bad. There is something wrong with the spiders. Something sinister. And I think Agnus, and whatever group she might have been a part of, are working against the spiders.

OK SO THIS EPISODE HURT MY HEART SO BAD!!!! LIKE "yeah yeah yeah poor guy his face got burned off" BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY POOR AGNES!!!! POOR BABY PROBABLY SPENT HER ENTIRE LIFE ISOLATED AND WITHOUT ANYONE WHO REALLY CARED ABOUT HER!!!! LIKE HERE'S SOME JUST OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD! 1:She literally didn't know how to smile, at least not in any natural way because she'd never had a reason to, so when she was approached by this guy who seemed to care how she was and wasn't some sleezy scumbag or part of her weird little group, she just did her best to do what she saw everyone else do when they felt good feelings. 2: she has NO IDEA how socializing really works, much less dates, so once again we see her doing what she's seen other people do and what she's heard about such as picking someone up at their home (she probably didn't realize that most people schedule these things) and taking them to a location, like a romantic walk in the park. 3: She literally goes to the cafe every morning and orders the most bland and basic drink and she gets so much satisfaction from it, she doesn't even drink it and she then just sits and does nothing but just that fragment of normalcy of ordering a basic black coffee every morning at a local cafe is so important to her. 4:She probably has trouble controlling her abilities, if she has any power over them at all. Clearly she did something with the tree and that house that held and kinda tied the affects of at least some of her fire to that place, but she still had lots of issues, like staying in one place for a long time probably would leave a heat mark of some sort (the chair she sat in and parts of her home), like if you put a hot pot on a piece of wood for a long time, if you just tap it to it then you'll see no visible damage but if you leave it there it's gonna leave a mark. (Also the cup her coffee came in probably wasn't as affected because the cups are designed to take heat). I can't think of any more off the top of my head atm but GEEZ! Poor thing!!!!

My theory from this episode and what we know so far: Agnes is part of the lightless flame, that we already knew. The war between the spiders entity and the lightless flame entity is also once again confirmed here. I find it odd that the witness didn't wonder how Agnes knew where he lived.. and also, the "web that was in the corner that morning", I think it wasn't just any web but the spiders entity trying to maybe approach the witness once they say/learned that he was going to have some kind of relationship with Agnes? And that's why the web got burned once Agnes went there, 'cause she wants to be careful and protect herself for any signs of the spiders. She definitely had made a spell or ritual connecting her to the tree and it's state, that's why she always had tied on her waist the hand. From her saying she was adopted and her talk about "destiny", I believe that the lightless flame cult took her when she was little (who knows what they actually did to her family) and trained her for her "big destiny" that was something to do with the entity they worship. Since she couldn't fully control her powers, I believe her destiny was to become a "host" of that entity? It is obvious though that she is very different from the cult members, she seems to be more like Michael from the spiral entity; human-appearing but in reality not that much human after all, though at some point both of them probably were. Her being a small child in the Hilltop house while she has been the same all those years afterwards make me thing that she originally was indeed a human, who was trained and given some powers from an early age (where she also had fun with her being given all those powers), her being let to fully grow and mature so that her body would be that of an adult (probably because that way she would be able to hold alot more power than if she was to be remained a child forever) and then done something to her body (as I said before, a ritual or spell) to make her not age from that point forward. When that woman with the tattoo came to find her in the cafe, I believe it was about the Hilltop house or even the lightless flame entity itself. Since Agnes was linked with the tree/the house and also linked with the fire entity (which is why she doesn't have full control of its powers), the "released" key-word was related to one of them. I think Agnes was tired of it all. She lived long enough to come to a realization that she is no longer that excited or eager about all that power and the responsibility that comes with it. She wanted some normality in her life, and that cafe was giving it to her. She didn't need to eat or drink, which is highly implied by her not touching any of the food or drinks given to her through out the statement, so I'm assuming that the black coffee with more for milk was something that was part of her normal life before she became something that didn't need to eat or drink; maybe what she was drinking herself before the change or something that one of her parents or a close person to her was drinking. Our witness was also someone who was giving her the sense of normality. All the walks in the park, all the dates, she wasn't doing them because she "felt" of doing them, she was doing them because that's what she thought she would feel like doing if she was a normal person. For example, it wasn't the movie itself but the act of going for a movie that she was interested in. The end of this story is a tragic one. Mostly because the witness wasn't hurt because he was punished or toyed with, he was hurt because that's what happens to anything and anyone who comes close to Agnes, even if she doesn't want to. She was given alot of power, but with that also came alot of sacrifices, one of them being the normality in her life, the other being she could no longer touch or feel the touch of another person without hurting them. I can't imagine how she might have felt when she saw how much her kiss was hurting the witness, not that much because of the witness itself being hurt but because she can't do even that without doing damage to the person she's kissing. As for the cult members, the tattoo with the man in flames, I don't believe it's just a tattoo. We've already heard about another flame tattoo that, once a spell is casted and flame gets to it, it unleashes flames that burn everything, so the tattoos are mostly something "trapped" as a tattoo and can anytime be summoned. So the man in flames, I believe, is someone who was trapped in those flames eternally with a spell so that he's trapped as a tattoo and can only be brought back if the person who has the tattoo decides to.

I think over the years she just got more powerful. She’s always been connected with fire. When she kissed the boy in Hilltop Road on the cheek, it didn’t burn him immediately, but there was a small, delayed burn. The pain from the burn snapped him out of Raymond’s spider mind-control. And she ended up setting the Hilltop Road house on fire. Her abilities just got stronger as she grew up. :)

Spoilers: Could it be that Agnes burned the spider in the corner so that she was free of the influence of the web? She was after all raised to complete the desolation ritual and the person responsible was Raymond Fielding. So maybe she burned the spider to be not under the Webs influence/observation to live the few moments as a genuine human being?

Does no one understand KNOCKING when entering a closed room? Is the institute really that lacking in manners? 😂

Possible spoilers ahead??? I haven’t actually listened past this point, but got spoiled in the replies of someone else’s comment that Jon has an ability to make people speak. I don’t wish to acquire any further knowledge on this front from ANY source other than the podcast itself, so anyone who knows what’s going on might read this and find it to be grossly inaccurate, but here goes nothing: I have a feeling that Elias’s “do you know how hard it would be to replace you?” refers to the fact that it would be hard to find someone else who can do the same thing Jon can, “making people speak”-wise. But who knows? I certainly am just navigating a sea of disconnected information and half-spoilers from the comment section, I haven’t the faintest of what’s going on, xD.

Something about Agnes is just intriguing. I don't quite know why, maybe its because of Jack's perception of her, but I picture her in a way that she is beauty. That she is lovely on her own level. I always pictured her in daylight, smiling sweetly, and sad when she went away. But sad in a way that she knew where she was going, and she isn't sad because she's going there, but sad that she never did it sooner. Because if she had, she never would have met Jack, and she'd never have to go after that. I don't think she regret leaving Jack behind. I do believe she wanted to stay.

Agnes deserved better

Because of the coffee cup burning the dude at the beginning, I'm inclined to believe that Agnes or at least this cult has something to do with the one ritual area in the forest episode. The man messed with his bottle of water that was boiling water and burned him the same way before he accidentally broke the bottle and everything he loved ended up burning up in flames. It probably has nothing to do with this specific episode, but the drink brings that back to me EDIT: finished the episode, Jon says exactly that. Nvm I'm not slick lmao

knowing what happens to agnes later in her life after this makes the whole thing so much more tragic. but despite that I still find this statement sweet. I came back to listen to it after finishing the series

so the fire guys REALLY hate the spider guys huh.
