It's not often you have a spider as a supporting protagonist, let alone a giant one. Also, I forgot this is Toei, not Daei; because some the effects here remind me of [original] Gamera movies.

Believe it and stand in amazement. The first ninja movie was this film. This was also the other Japanese movie to inspire George Lucas to write STAR WARS. The villain was once the student of the mountain ninja master. He betrayed and murdered the hero's father. There is a scene where the villain tells of the story's characters; I am your father... The villain has a group of bounty hunters to find the young Lord and kill him. This dialogue comes from the American International Pictures English release.

Yep, this one and The Hidden Fortress. The latter was almost referenced in A New Hope, as Darth Vader force-choked the guy during the “I find your lack of faith disturbing” scene. The Phantom Menace also featured a character of royal blood who’s hiding in plain sight (The Hidden Fortress, though Jiraiya briefly does the same thing at the beginning of his journey). Also, the main character and villain are mystical swordsmen of sorts. The villain is the right-hand servant of the ruling monarch. The hero goes on his quest after the person/people who raised him are killed by the antagonists. Even though a whole group of bandits/bounty hunters are hired by the villain to hunt down the hero, only ONE bandit/BH actually stands out to serve an integral role in the plot (Mamobi for TMS; Boba Fett for SW). The evil monarch dies shortly before the mystical villain dies. Small world.

You know, I’m fine with the cheesy kaiju effects; it’s part of the magic and what makes these movies fun to watch. What ruins it for me is the spider’s webbing looking like shaving cream when we’ve seen decent webbing effects before from Kumonga, Mothra, and even a few Ultra Kaiju.

I don’t think it was meant to be webbing, as opposed to some kind of an enzyme meant to blind the enemy, as seen in the clip. If it were webbing, I’m certain the effects team would’ve put far more effort into making the foam actually look like a spider’s web.
