The Magic Of A Midnight Launch

Фильм және анимация

Howdy Y'all!
Before the wake of widespread digital media, the practice of midnight releases were a common tradition for many gamers of the late 90's to early 2000's. With most people buying their games digitally in present day, it seems as though the tradition of a midnight launch is in imminent danger for extinction. In this video we're going to revisit some of the most hype Midnight Launch events, as well as go into detail about what most of these events would entail. So whether you've never experienced one for yourself, or are looking to reminisce on the times that you have. Please join me as we look into the magical world of Midnight Releases; As we find out how far some will go, to be the first to play.
Hope you all enjoy!

I have only attended one midnight release, to purchase Modern Warfare 2 for my underage brother. I thought it would be a drag but I had a great time despite not being into the game myself. There is something undeniably magical about that collective buzz!

I knew someone who attended a Halo 2 release with her husband, no joke - it was the day they got married. Their topper was a clear Master Chief and they cut the cake with a Convent energy sword. After that, they went right to the store and stood outside from midnight until opening 😂 Probably the most epic thing I've ever seen.

Back in the day, I worked the midnight launches of Halo 2 and GTA: San Andreas at the biggest game store in Europe. Fun times and super crazy. It was great to see so many people hyped up for them and to share in the anticipation and community. Sadly, we won't get those times back. People won't get to experience it like we did. We were fortunate and it's disheartening to see more and more physical gaming shops disappear. Thank you for the enjoyable video, Vincent, keep up the great work!

Sadly, working in gaming retail is not as glamorous as you might think. Gamers are spoilt now. And more and more physical gaming shops are dying. It's a shame. Half the fun was working the trade-in prices amongst different gaming shops to get the best money on trading in your used games or consoles to get the latest and greatest title or newest hardware. I'm not sure if you would ever do a 'my favourite gaming memories video' where you share yours with us and we can share ours with you. But one of mine is this, playing Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast online with people around the world, on a console and a dial-up 33k modem (Europe didn't get the 56k Dreamcast modem that you got in the USA) Truly revolutionary and still it's the only MMORPG I ever finished 100% Hearing this still gives me goosebumps - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqyht6uIYsyYhKw.html Thank you for replying!

The last release I remember hearing about was for Kingdom Hearts 3! I didn't go, because my dad was like??? Why would you do that? But I was able to go to midnight releases for the PS3 and PS4, and those were wild! I feel like the magic around game releases as a whole has been hindered by how much gets released in a month, on top of digital alternatives.

I was born IN 2000 and never went to a first console launch event like that, but it feels relatable in a sort of way But instead my dad woke up in 1999 and bought a PS1, right after the 1998 inflation, only afford to rent a house and there's a plethora of rep dvd disc stores or flee markets my dad used to go to. We used to go there buying rep ps1 games alongside with ps2 discs in 2008 and psp isos in 2011. GTA 1 and SA, Dewprism, Gran Turismo 1-4, Xtreme Tokyo Racer 2, you name it. It was different back in the days, now we just stick our eyes to the screen.

Great video. It's great to see these rare videos talking about the culture around the 2000s, because it was just hazy enough in my memory that I wasn't knee-deep in it, but I remember that excitement filling the air. The only midnight release I ever went to was very different from the story described here; I was 8 years old, and after years following the Brawl Dojo, I was able to convince my parents to let me get the game at midnight. My parents didn't know much about games, and I didn't have an older brother or sister to get me into it, but they were still kind enough to take a chance on this thing. Being a child, I didn't even have a pre-order, as I didn't know what that was, but just barely, they managed to find a copy for me. I can still see myself in that dark little room at home, 1am, finally seeing the opening of the Subspace Emissary for the first time.

I was in community college on 11/9/04 and skipped the hell out of that day to play Halo 2 😅. I'll forever cherish those midnight launches and it was always cool af to chat with random people at GameStop that were excited to pick up their copy of whatever huge game was releasing. And yes, I remember stores like EB World/Games, Babbages, FuncoLand, and Software, Etc.; they were more amazing than the more well known branded GameStop, but I still had amazing memories with the store and weird to say I miss GS even after all the shady stuff they've done at certain points in their business.

I’ve been to a good amount of midnight launches; mostly for Pokémon or smash bros games, but none will compare to the amazing experience that was the Mario odyssey launch in NYC. I went with one of my friends in high school and although we waited like 6 hours halfway down the block at the Nintendo NY store, it was amazing! Met some awesome people, popular Nintendo KZreadrs at the time like CND and Etika (RIP) and even Reggie Fils-Aime. There was also a live performance of Jump up superstar toward the end of the night, once they had handed out all the tickets. It was a magical night and I remember coming home at like 2 in the morning and just staying up for another hour to play.

There feels like this weird disconnect with modern video games. I'm not gonna say tripe like "da games were better back then" when we had just as many crappy games in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s. Everyone is less social these days. MMOs are on life support as a genre. Half the words in the English vocabulary are now a bannable offense in matchmaking, too many live-service multiplayer games that die within a year and are totally forgotten.

  • @Vynsent

    @Vynsent

    Ай бұрын

Without a doubt! I think there’s a major disconnect with companies and their players more than anything. The industry has gotten a bit stagnant, and the multiplayer experience is definitely suffering in most games. I really wish when MMO’s were enjoyed by most of their player base. Now it’s mostly just people complaining about the game they play 😂

Sadly this type of thing will most likely never happen again, thanks to the ease that is, the digital marketplace :/ Edit: I realise that we can still do 'launch partys' for the actual consoles, but I don't even have a local game shop in my city anymore it closed years ago, around the time that digital games began to fill everybody's hdd's...

Although I was never at a midnight launch I always wanted to attend one. Back then I was a young teenager for my parents to allow me to attend any or even buy games on release.
