The Magazine and the Miracle: Finding Father Kapaun
During the Korean War, US Army Chaplain Fr. Emil Kapaun died in a prisoner-of-war camp after valiantly ministering to his men and saving many lives. For decades, his remains were believed to be lost, until half a century later, one of the men who buried him happened upon Father’s story in Columbia Magazine. Im a 4th degree KC in Billings, MT. My daughter worked at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in Hawaii as a PHD in Forensic Anthropology. She was assigned to the Korean War team and helped identify Fr. Kapaun. She helped return many unknown remains to their families, but this was her most memorable case.
Several years ago we showed a documentary about Father Kapaun to our high school catechism class. At that time, we had no information about the search for his remains. This video brought instant chills, followed by tears of joy! Vivat Jesus!
So this is how Fr. Kapaun's remains were found. Divine Providence, indeed. Thank you for this beautiful video 🥹

There's a memorial to him here on Camp Humphreys in Korea. The Army still remembers and honors him. I see it on my way to and from work everyday.

In the book of remembrance written/edited by Fr Tonne, pastor in Pilsen in the early 50’s, text from a letter Fr Kapaun wrote to the Albert Klenda family of Pilsen shortly before the Battle of Unsan. A decade and a half after that letter was written, Lt Dean Klenda, USAF, was reported as missing when his F105 was shot down over North Vietnam. His remains have since been recovered and buried in Kansas. Two heroes. Two bereaved families separated by a small amount of time and space.i am truly thankful for their sacrifice and am thankful they are both resting in eternal peace after so many years
