The thing I love about Bondrewd is that his compassion is both real and a ruse of his experiments. He has to make the children love him for the blessings to work but he must also love the children too. This is why he knows all of their names and dreams. He also is not a petty villain. When he loses, he sends the kids off with the best of wishes, hoping their journey is full of blessings and curses. He is so messed up, but the way he acts and carries himself is so good it makes you want to like him. You know except for the child murder part. Also the blood and gore I feel is a necessary part to the show. Riko is too happy and childish and the brutality of the abyss lets the audience and the characters to remember where they are. This is no place for children to be happily walking down paths or when someone get stung by something to just walk it off.

I disagree, brutality is part of life. Works of fiction that arent afraid to show the harsh realities end up being the most profound. Shows like naruto that make child soldiers killing for the state to like a fun adventure romp just arent satisfying to me. This is a proper lovecraftian story in lovecraftian stories, knowing knowledge man "is not supposed to know" leads to insanity. Things that exist far outside our boundries and comfort zone. The solution to not liking this type of content, is to find a different series. Not to diminish the series by suggesting the author avoid it. Like how the media refuses to show images of a war because "they are disturbing", well whats occuring is disturbing, and maybe you should feel disturbed about it.

But when it comes to the brutal moments I completely agree with you in the fact that it's something real that should not be ignored.

I do not think he uses the helmet in this way. More like the symbol of "hello this is me, this body is me right now" + he has another relic in the helmet too (that beam). I think he can switch between his "selves" pretty easily if the distance or mainly force field does not prevent it or make it harder to do. From what I understood he lets lots of people form umbra hands act with their self most of the time (like Gueira or Gyarike) but some of them are on "auto bondrewd" mode (when experimenting on Reg) which are kind of slow and automatic version of Bondrewd. And regarding Bondrewd and his morality/love. There is no deception and there is no morality. He genuinely loves and admires everyone in his own twisted way... for him it is real and the great example is cartridge system. If his bond and love with those children was not real but just a deception... it would not work... it can not be one sided... His morality and humanity is so fucked up and gone thanks to Abyss and Zoaholic... + probably his original personality, that his way of loving, doing things and basically existing is so twisted and different from "normal" humans that no wonder someone would think that he is faking his feelings... he is not. That is what makes him so scary and captivating.

I actually think the opposite when it comes to showing all the stuff we normally wouldn't want to see, it adds a layer of awfulness that we get to relate and sympathize with. If the series was to exist without showing those awful experiences we wouldn't have gotten some of the impactful and most emotional scenes like Riko's arm being crushed and the Prushka backstory. I think the idea of very vividly showing us what is going on comes from the whole idea of "show don't tell" and it means more to us because we see it for ourselves. Reading the manga you get to see more blatantly disgusting things and it really gives you a more immediate perspective on how disturbing the abyss is, and you start to appreciate the risks that all the characters are willing to take to venture deeper. It makes me wish they would've made the anime a lot darker so we could really have an underatanding of how grueling the journey is going to be.

whenever I think of Bondrewd's "love", it's always not about its genuineness, but its "value''. I'd guess that to Bondrewd, ''love'' is something akin to an ''object'', which can be made through the fulfillment of a list of certain conditions. In that crafting process, even his emotions and sentimental attachments are just things to be ticked off the list. This explains to me 3 things: 1. The abyss considers his "love'' to be real since his feelings toward the children are every bit as real as they can get; 2. Bondrewd can easily give up his ''love'' since, to him, that ''object'' only worths being sacrificed for his greater purposes; 3. (this one is a little bit of a stretch) As a scientist, using something as abstract as ''love'' probably doesnt sit well with him, so considering it to be a real object would make things more "quantifiable". The 3rd point is probably also related to the "value" in the Golden village, cuz "value" is said to be something originates deeper than one's material possessions, but the ''balancing'' equates it into material things anyway. Idk, these are just my random guesses :)

I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie!!!! I cried 3 times while watching it--not because I felt sad, but because I felt sickened and utterly repulsed. The story is incredible, and Bondrewed...oh man. Simply watching this made me nauseated. And while I don't like gore either, I argue every single instance of it (and the sex-talk) has thematic significance; it's supposed to be there. Exclamation Point has a phenomenal video about it, but here's my own conclusion I made before that: everything in the abyss is "business-like," if you need to stuff medicine up someone's butt, and talk about it for the sake of your survival, it's gonna happen--if people get boners or throw up, that is the untamed nature of the abyss, and how people MUST bare every single part of themselves, how they must become bare anatomically, spiritually, emotionally. The Abyss does not blanket things in fluffiness, and the characters are fully aware of this--I estimate that's the cause for Riko's upbeat nature; it works as contrast, and audience anchor, and her deflection and optimism acts as a coping mechanism in-world--if ALL the characters were deadly serious, I think it'd be too much; audiences need a buoy. Anyway, that's my 2 cents, I hope it helps you and adds to your watching experience! I love this story to death. I'd LOVE to see a video on season 2; I'm currently watching it myself and absolutely, totally loving it. The worldbuilding is so insanely good and I love all the characters!!! Anyway, happy watching!!!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

i also think that riko is the ray of hope which guides nanchi, reg, prushka and now faputa in their journey. she is filled with curiosity and even bad stuffs can't stop her. it only make her curious more. definetly it make her like other white whistle delvers but that also make her true protagonistof this series and a very interesting character. it is not like she is filled with optimism like shounen protagonists which many people think, she is more like bondrewed, lyza and ozen attracted by unknown and thrilled by idea of adventure that's what inspire her and in turn others.

I was fine with pretty much everything in the movie except for the bit with Reg's bellybutton. I dunno why, that just awakened some visceral, unpleasant emotion in me. I don't necessarily think it was too much, because the Abyss is supposed to be this hellish, brutal place. Awful stuff should happen to people in it, and it makes sense that for someone to thrive in it the way Bondrewd has they should also be expected to be brutal. But dear god that was probably the most uncomfortable I've been watching something in years. Like, I watched a live action show recently where someone had to insert a needle into their own eye to take a sample of eye fluid, and that was nowhere near as difficult to watch as Reg's torture scene.

"Auto" mode is like a hivemind, with individuals exchanging info to and from the host automatically, as the result they are a bit sluggish, like it was seen in Reg lab scene. Umbra Hands are voluntiers, btw, they really like the prospect to work for Bondrewd and to have all those juicy artifacts. I also feel like the use of gore and other explicit things are unnecessary to be shown at times (and other times necessary), but I kind of accepted that that's just kind of what the author wants to be shown. Unfortunately, some people can't just turn that off and ignore it like others, and I really forget that sometimes. I had a friend once in middle school who had trouble getting through ep1 of FMA/FMAB because of the blood and dismemberment during the human transmutation scene, which I didn't think twice about. A bit late to the party, but here are my 5 cents nontheless: First of all, Bondrewd is actually BOTH, a lovingly and caring parent AND without morality. It isn't clear what exactly caused him to be like that (the longing of the abyss, the use of the many relics, especially Zoaholic, or something else entirely), but that is indeed the way he is. There are a couple of things that shows that he isn't doing it just for deceiving them: For example, he never really outright lied in the show, he keeps the act up, even if none of his victims are close by, he shows several genuine acts of kindness and most importantly: He really remembers ALL of the children. He knows all the children he worked with/on, their names, their preferences, what they were like, etc. Even after they had been packed into lunchboxes, he still remembers exactly which box is who. And he also changed his mind and roots for Nanachi's and their friend's adventure after his "loss". Someone that doesn't care about those children at all wouldn't go that far. This is also what makes him a genuinely great character. On one side, he is a lovingly father-figure that genuinely cares about "his children". But at the same time, his inhuman lack of morale and sick addiction to the mysteries of the abyss makes him one of the scariest humans. And as strange as it sounds, his behaviour makes perfect sense considering his lack of any morale or consciousness. He is a relateable, but equally alienating entity. The show also usually doesn't even display him as just a villain, but rather as a "threat". He isn't something they should be fighting against just to take him down or stop him, but only fight him for self-protection and preservation. Regarding the display of other uncomfortable themes such as gore, vomit and the likes: This is serves all the narrative and the show wouldn't be as great without it. This doesn't mean I (or anyone else for that matter) do or should like seeing that stuff, but the sole purpose of these displays is to visualize the horrors and dangers of the world they (now) live in. These things are MEANT to make you uncomfortable. They are in a world full of unfathomable dangers and threats. They are on a one-way-trip into metaphorical HELL, where Monsters can read your intentions, Birds mimic your cries of death and some bugs eat your brains.

Man, I love the use of Nier's soundtrack. Always makes me happy hearing people pay tribute to it :) I think maybe I'm just desensitized, and I know I'm in the minority, but I actually really appreciate how much the anime, and especially the manga, aren't afraid to show. The story seems to me to be written specifically to make the audience incredibly uncomfortable, and this only grows more and more as the story goes on. It's rare seeing stuff like what the manga depicts in commercially published works, and I frankly find it actually kinda refreshing. You know how when games get localized to different regions, there's always the fear of something being censored, whether it's gore, sexual themes, off-color jokes, or whatever? Like all the games that always get banned in Australia, for example. It's nice seeing something that's not toned down for once. To me, the story is equal parts despair and hope. Things always get worse, but through that, things can also get better. There's good and bad parts to everything, and it's kinda like life. Each new day promises both potential hardships and potential joy. For me, it's a 10/10 series, would never recommend lol

I believe this series to be THE ADVENTURE anime. even the themes of the show are directly related to that aspect. and to me the gross stuff are a part that adventure spirit. it makes the show feel more grounded, and real, despite it having so many fantasy elements. also the body horror is legit horrifying and disturbing, which at least to me is a positive.

Yeah, it's ADVENTURE story all the way... the most realistic one I've seen so far I mean real adventures where you go into unknown are when doing anything wrong would bring you into state in which you would wish for death, your mindset may be devastated, the things that you become able to do to survive make you hate yourself, there's constant fight between curiosity, will of life and conscience..., even your own body become less and less valuable to the point that achieving anything is worth your life, you either die with regret that you stepped out of the house, die happy enjoying your discovery or get out as something inhumane (now that I think about it curse of abyss is kind of on point, just a little more graphic) Adventures are not exactly about fun like most adventure movies show it. To enjoy the taste of unreachable fruit you need to plunge into hell and hope that it won't be you who will end up eaten

I think all the gross stuff is necessary to drive home the fact that these kids are essentially on a one way death mission. The fact that it was an unforgiving journey was a given from episode 1. It’s not pretty to look at, but without it the show wouldn’t really be driving home a key point in its narrative

I consider Bondrewd as a somewhat justified villain. He did terrible things and definitely not sorry for them, but also he does it because the abyss, place that can take entire lives using slightly elevated slopes, demands such behavior in order to conquer it. Bondrewd is aa sick person devoured by his wish of having full knowledge of the abyss, but he is still a person, who sacrifices not only others, but his own life, who cares about people he kills and who probably doesn't even see his own actions as monstrous because of how much he experienced all this on himself

God i hate Bondrewd But, also respect his devotion to researching the Abyss for the good of all mankind. the fact that He was able to accomplish everyones desires is shocking when you think about it. 1. He never imprisoned Nanachi, She was free to leave anytime 2. Team needed a white whistle to progress, and he made it possible (with prushka ): ) 3. He never treated his "experiments" as "trash", instead remembered each of their names and dreams like writing down their names in the history books and cared for them until he "sacrificed" them to understand the abyss more. 4. He was never selfish or egotistical, didnt do things for His own personal gains. Majority of his findings are used by cave raiders 5. Prushka wanted to adventure with them, He set it up for it to happend there are more but my hands hurt

I read this in a comment section once, so I have no idea if it has any basis but it said that Nanachi was supposed to be what Prushka was in this film but the fans loved her so much the mangaka kept her as a 3rd main character. To be honest, I kinda believed it since I felt like like Prushka's role in the film would have been more impactful if it was Nanachi as she had been with Riko and Reg longer.

Bondrew reasoning regarding care and affection to some is not because he has a good side it's actually because he is this evil. He does this so that he can get the blessing of the Abyss that is given between the bond between two people. The only way to successfully get the blessing one must have a deep connection with another. The deeper the connection the greater chance of receiving the blessing. otherwise you'll get the Abyss' curse. It's true that Bondrew has a true emotional bond with his "experiments" to successfully get the blessing but remember Bondrew is an individual that is willing to go to great lengths to achieve his goals.

I didn't know I missed a movie and watched the second season before the third movie. It all made sense, Reg's wound, Reg's broken hand, the sudden appearance of a white stone, the anime starting with flashbacks while also riding a ball inside a body of water down. I love the thematic idea of the abyss and how it reflects the tone of the show, starting out so innocent and cute on the surface but as they get deeper and deeper the lid on the horror slips off more and more to reveal the true nature of the abyss. I think the gore plays into that, this series is not gonna shy away from showing the really nasty things that are happening, a child will be sick or pee herself in fear or pain because they're that scared, and they should be. The abyss is a terrifying place that can and will kill you so it kind of needs to take it's gloves off now and again to show some nastiness.

Hey!!!! I love this movie!!! it makes me cry!!!! BUT YEAH Bondrewd's love for Prushka isn't a lie! He actually loves Prushka as much as Prushka loves him, becauuuseee- if he didn't then the blessing of the abyss wouldn't have worked at all. It's implicit in the rules, that the two who are subject to the blessing and the curse must love eachother in equal way or else it won't work, so uh, no, Bondrewd did not lie to Prushka, he wanted to see the dawn with her, both became "one" in the sense that his narehate body was thanks to the father-daughter love they both share. That and Prushka withstood the full pain of the curse, praying for Bondrewd WHILE ALSO Praying for Riko so- Prushka was too powerful sobs I'm gonna cry again- So YEAH, PAIN, ABSOLUTE PAIN haha

I think the shock to the gore is because it's all so fucking cute. This anime is very beautiful, but also quite cute. Right up until it isn't. And that switch of bobbleheaded, big eyed anime to absolutely Infant Annihilator level fucked is shocking. Bondhaus is definitely an asshole, but his love I feel is sincere. Sincere in the way that you might love your work, or some tools you use to get a job done. It's love, just the sort of inhuman love someone who has definitely fucked with the sixth level too many times with their people lunchbox fueled backpack can offer.

It's interesting to see how your biggest gripe with the series is probably my favorite part about it and what makes it one of my absolute favorites There's a thin line between being too censoring and playing it safe/adding gore and disgusting scenes just because you want to please people who like that sort of thing, I think made in the abyss hits the perfect nore of just being "realistic" The abyss is a dangerous place and our story follows 2 kids that descend through this man eating hole, In order to keep the series feel natural and with no unnecessary plot-armor you have to make it look like what the premise suggests I'd be didappointed if I found out those 2 would just go through this dangerous journey unscathed Things like vomiting or cutting parts or absolute psychological trauma (the word lunchbox was never the same to me after the movie) is what makes the series feel realistic and what delievers on the theme that "hey you guys are gonna suffer down there but you still choose to do it" and giving the characters a minimal amount of plot armor that just barely gets them to the end of the series alive.
