The Mad Monster (1942) [Horror] [Drama]

Фильм және анимация

The Mad Monster is an American horror film released in 1942 by P.R.C. (Producers Releasing Corporation), a Poverty Row studio. The film, a B-movie shot in black and white, features a mad scientist and a werewolf as the main characters.
The plot involves a scientist who has been discredited by his peers. He attempts to kill them off after he develops a secret formula that transforms his gardener into a murderous wolf man. The story begins on a fog-bound moonlight night in a swamp; a wolf howls. The scene shifts to the nearby laboratory of Dr. Lorenzo Cameron (George Zucco), who draws blood from a caged wolf. Secured to a table is Dr. Cameron's simpleminded but strong gardener, Petro (Glenn Strange), who is to be the doctor's subject in an experiment. Dr. Cameron injects a serum made from a wolf's blood into the cooperative Petro, who loses consciousness, grows fur and fangs, and awakens after he has completely turned into a wolf man.
Dr. Cameron then turns to an empty table and visualizes his former colleagues sitting there-four professors who ridiculed his theory that transfusions of wolf blood could be used to give a human being wolf-like traits. He recalls how the scientific community, the press and the public joined in a resounding chorus of ridicule, which cost Cameron his position at the University. Addressing the spectral professors, Cameron declares, "Right now, we're at war. At war with an enemy that produces a horde that strikes with a ferocious fanaticism". Cameron proposes giving wolf man traits to the army to help with the war. When the professors scoff, Cameron says that his proposal matters no longer; he is now going to have his wolf man kill his former colleagues. Cameron then administers an antidote to Petro that transforms him back into a human; Petro remembers nothing.
The following night, Cameron turns Petro into a wolf and sends him to the swamp. Before the night is over Petro has entered a nearby home and killed a little girl. When Cameron hears of the child's fate, he knows his formula works. He turns to his real priority which is destroying the scientists who ruined his career. The rest of the film involves Cameron setting up elaborate scenarios in which Petro is alone with each scientist when he becomes a wolf. The more he does this the more Petro's transformations into a wolf man become unpredictable.
Cameron's daughter Lenora (Anne Nagel) is romantically involved with Tom Gregory (Johnny Downs), a newspaper reporter who is investigating the death of the little girl. As the professors are killed off one by one, Gregory begins to suspect that Cameron is behind the slayings. The principals are in the Cameron home when a thunderstorm begins and a bolt of lightning sets Cameron's laboratory on fire. Lenora and Tom escape from the house after encountering Petro in wolf form. Petro turns on Cameron and kills him, just before the fire brings the house down on both of them.
---
Directed by Sam Newfield, produced by Sigmund Neufeld, written by Fred Myton, starring Johnny Downs as Tom Gregory, George Zucco as Dr. Lorenzo Cameron, Anne Nagel as Lenora Cameron, Glenn Strange as Petro, Sarah Padden as Grandmother, Gordon De Main as Professor Fitzgerald, Mae Busch as Susan, Reginald Barlow as Professor Warwick, Robert Strange as Professor Blaine, Henry Hall as Country Doctor, Ed Cassidy as Father, John Elliott as Professor Hatfield, Slim Whitaker as Officer Dugan, Gil Patric as Detective Lieutenant.

I was raised on weekend black & white horror flicks. They may seem "boring" by todays CGI standards but, I just love the nostalgia they bring. This one was pretty good. Dr. Lorenzo played by George Zucco made a wonderful antagonist. Worth the watch if you enjoy old B & W horror movies.

My top favorites of all time are : 1_ IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE 1953 2_ INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS 1956 The 1st is an appeal against senseless xenophobia. The 2nd is a caution against complacency in the face of the peril of dehumanization.

I don't think such old films should be classified as horror but scary films and this should be a separate genre. Those films were not shocking, disgusting, or atrociously violent like modern horror films that seem as if these are trying to be like ISIS videos. Such old films were sometimes a bit scary and often beautiful or creative.

"I grow old, I grow old. I shall wear my trousers rolled." (T.S. Eliot.) My friend, what's truly sad is those of us who are old enough to have seen these films when they were first released won't be around for much longer. When we're gone, our favorite actors and actresses will only be remembered by those who study film. I'm sorry, but "The Blair Witch Project" can't hold a candle to Tod Brownings "Dracula" or the classic "Nosferatu."

For whatever reason, the local stations in my area didn't air the old PRC and Republic horror flicks, though they did run the Universal and American International movies faithfully. For instance, I didn't have an opportunity to see the terrific "Strangler of the Swamp" with Rosemary LaPlanche until I rented a bedraggled transfer on vhs tape back in the nineties. Man, the cage for the wolf is tiny. I'm reminded of the time I agreed to bring the housemates' cat over to the vet for a checkup and discovered they hadn't bought a new cat carrier since he was a kitten. He technically fit in the thing, but his fur was poking out the air holes once we got him in and he really couldn't move around at all. I thought the cat fanciers in the waiting room were going to kill me when I brought him in, and the vet gave me a note to bring the actual owners telling them not to use that carrier ever again. And like a dope I tried leaving him loose in the car while I was driving there and back, only for him to panic and try to jam himself under my brake pedal repeatedly. That was the last time I did that errand for them.

Even if the body of work in the horror field is small compared to the more well known actors like lugosi or price or lee, George Zooco ( and Lionel Atwill ) must be reremember and recognize also as all time great horror stars. Both are always worth watching.

I absolutely agree. I can't remember how many films I have seen with Zucco and Atwill where they just give the greatest performances and outshine the leads in the film.

@patrickoneill8707 even if the movie is weak , it doesn't matter, when those two actors are on screen, it is the highlight of those films.
