Apple had been naming all computers using the 68030 processers with an "x", such as the IIx and IIcx. When it came time to put the 68030 processor into the SE series, they unfortunately decided that calling it the Macintosh "SEx" wasn't the best marketing idea, so they settled on "SE 30".

I miss my Quadra 840AV. That was my "go to" machine for about 5 years until I purchased my PowerMac G4 (400hz) in 2000. I loved it for Photoshop! I never did use its AV ports for video capture beyond experimentation. It was a fantastic machine and I still miss using. I am shocked at how the GUI and software seemed to be pretty snappy on it back then as compared to OSX or Win10 today. Thanks for making this video --brought back some good memories.

You should do a video on the LC 575. My mom was an elementary school teacher, and she had one of those in her classroom. During the summer, she got to bring it home...and I spent a lot of time playing with it as a teenager since we couldn't afford our own home computer at that point in time. It was a cool little machine for its day.

My experience was similar. My mom was an elementary school teacher and was allowed to bring home the school's Commodore PET on weekends. That was the first computer I ever used, and it was fascinating. I did once get an LC 575 with a burned-out monitor, but then it was completely destroyed in a basement flood. I do have the LC 520 which I may base a future video on. Thanks for the suggestion!

I owned a bunch of rescued Macs that included a Quadra 700 and an 800. I loved both, but ended up really adopting the 700, largely due to the PITA of the case, as you outline here. The 700 was maxed, with a great Radius graphics card a Sonnet QuadDoubler that took it to 50 Mhz. I loved both those old computers, but that 700 was really nicely designed.

My freshman year at the University of Texas, we had these in the computer lab, and they just flew compared to the 486 PC and dial-up modem in my dorm room, plus of course System 7 felt way more refined than Windows 3.1. The lab was half Quadra 800's and half Dell PC's, and I liked the Macs so much better, and finally got a Mac clone of my own a year and a half later (equivalent to the PowerMac 8100 but with a much more accessible case).

back when I was going to get my first computer, I almost decided on getting a Radius 81/110, but decided instead on a 7500/100. I kind of wish I went with the 81/110 because it's so much nicer looking and would have been faster, though not by much. I still turn on and use my old 7500 (now upgraded to a G4/400) from time to time, but I sometimes wonder if an 81/110 would have been better.

I started college in 1995 and we had one of these as an audio editor / DAW. It was my first experience with a DAW, and they still had a class to teach old-fashioned tape splicing at the time! I couldn't tell you about its' internals; I just know we had an external 1.2 GB SCSI hard drive, along with an external (2x?) CD Burner. I believe the software was Sound Designer II connected with a DigiDesign Audio Interface. It amazed me at the time, and I burned my first CD in 1995 (the blank cost me 14.99 at the school bookstore!!)

  • @Kennephone

That 2x CD burner must have cost the school several thousand dollars back then. It wasn't until 1995 than HP released the first burner under $1000, and they had probably gotten it a year or 2 earlier.

@@Kennephone I'm not positive it was a 2x, but I think it was. I just remember being amazed that I could create my very own CD! I also remember having to be very careful, because if there was a buffer problem (or any problem for that matter), you'd end up with a $15 coaster. (Good times though, wouldn't trade them for anything.)

I just recently discovered your videos, and have really enjoyed your videos, your unique (no, that is not code for something else) style, and all the knowledge. Having grown up on the PC side, never followed macs: so it is interesting to learn and see all I (perhaps fortunately given the company at that time) missed out on. Appreciate all the time and research you put in on the content. Along those lines, and in relation to this video, did you know the guys behind Myst got their start doing games for hypercard? Given your depth of knowledge I am guessing you do. Regardless, if you haven't seen it they did a bit on ArsTechnica's WarStories series a while back talking about it. Thought you might enjoy it if you haven't caught that one. (The one for Prince of Persia is similar in that it goes into talking about the issue designing around with those early Mac's limitations. Regardless, enjoy the content and keep up the good work. 😊

You forgot the actual step 1 for removing the logic board: pull all expansion cards. The MLB's not going noplace with cards installed. Sadly even up through the 9500 the third external drive slot in this case was basically reserved for tape since the front panel's shielding was only large enough to accept such a drive even after removing the blanking plate. Kind of dumb if you hoped to put in a second CD drive or something but you may have been able to cram a 3.5" MO or Zip in there if you were determined and didn't care about how ugly it was after the fact (or could find a custom bezel which I think I have for an 8500). The floppy bezel on these and a couple other Quadra/Centris models was specially designed to work with either the auto or manual inject drives. Note the indent at the bottom that's not present on the old auto-inject models but isn't fully developed as it is on the manual-inject types. There were a handful of Macs around this time, mostly '040 and NuBus PPCs, that could use either auto or manual inject drives where most others would only work with either/or (at least, not without cable mods), for example the Color Classic (auto only) or Performa 6400 (manual only). The lower drive bay was reserved for fixed disks and was able to accommodate either a single full-height 3.5" drive, or an optional server-focused caddy for two half-height drives. The latter was more for the 8100 and later models with their second SCSI bus but with a FWB JackHammer installed it would work just as well here.

What an incredible channel! Almost finished watching all your Mac episodes after discovering the channel yesterday. Shared the channel with my Dad who is also watching all the episodes. I am also from southern Ontario and have been a Mac user since late 1987 (Plus and SE). Any chance you were a member of MUGLO (Macintosh User Group of London Ontario)? Used to meet at TV London office, and then Central Highschool. Cheers! Hope to see more episodes!

Thanks very much! Good to hear from someone local, who also started with Mac computers in the 80's. I was never a member of MUGLO, though I wish I had known about it, since I went to school in London from 1987-1990. I did go to a few Sarnia User Group meetings in later years. I'm glad you found and like the channel. Thanks for sharing it, too! They will appear slowly, but there will be more episodes.

Funny story - I was looking through a pile of old computer stuff near London, and they had a couple of boxes of disks that had the MUGLO logo on them. They must have been distributed at the meetings. It made me think of your comment and come back to it.

No, I was recording a friend playing Pole Position in the 80’s and the car stalled out just a couple meters from the finish line. That was his response. But it applies to so many other aspects of life.

Thanks, and you make a good point. I tried not to stray too far from the featured computer in case I got hold of a 840av down the road (yeah, right). Plus the 840av was an alternative to the 800, not a replacement for it, so that's why I only talked about the 8100 as the successor.

65scribe I get what you’re saying, but by alternative do you pretty much mean “variation” where it’s the same machine but with some slight differences?

  • @65scribe

The Quadra 840av and 660av were the new line of Macs engineered for audio-video work, so I definitely wouldn't say slight differences, but using the same cases as the Quadra 800 and 610. The 840av was the fastest 68K mac to ever be built and was still available for a few months after the Powermac 8100 came out.

Poor LC520. I'm trying to get a LC 575 myself...I bought a LC 580 off eBay but it...exploded. I'm not kidding, the upper part of the casing broke in about 20 places and the machine is now entirely worthless!

  • @65scribe

That sounds like a pretty catastrophic failure! I do still have the LC 520, but had a second one for parts that I got at a thrift shop for $4. I took a picture of the LC 520 for Wikipedia, and now it's everywhere! Even copyrighted on Chinese websites. LOL.

Yeah, it's only good for parts...the 500MB IDE drive will come in handy for my Performa 630 if it's still good, and old Mac CD drives are always handy. If I had the know-how, I'd make it into an external drive for my SE/30, SE, and soon to be acquired IIsi. Meanwhile, I search for a LC 550 or 575, hopefully one I don't have to ship!

Apple has its good and bad towers. Like any major purchase, buyers have to do their homework. My 8600 (1997), G4 (2000), and Mac Pro (2008) are all performing well. The point is that now there’s not even an option for an upgradeable Mac and Apple is leaving money on the table.

I've always liked Apple products but they were always too expensive for my budget. Today is even worse with a baseline price of a Mac Pro being $5999.99. Also, when you use today's Apple products, you are forced into their ecosystem of peripherals. Don't get me wrong, the Mac Pro is a well designed machine, but I'm not going to spend $5999.99 on a desktop given the current state of the PC market. Rather than spend $5999.99 on a Mac Pro, I could: build my own PC for a fraction of the cost of a Mac Pro, install the MacOS on it and save thousands of dollars.

  • @65scribe

Completely correct. It’s one of the reasons I still use a 2008 Mac Pro as my main machine. Admittedly, that would not work for many users needs.

@@65scribe The 2008 Mac Pro is an outstanding machine. I like the case of the 2008 Mac Pro better than today's Mac Pro. I've never seen the inside of a 2008 Mac Pro, but it seems to me that you should be able to swap out the motherboard for a newer one and replace some of the hardware. Given Apple's tendency toward propriety, this might turn out to be major surgery and you'd better off building a Hackintosh. Sorry about the rambling. :)

Moving from the G5 to Intel Xeon freed up a lot of room inside the case, but what I like is that I can still load PowerPC software as needed. That might be an idea to hack a second-hand Mac Pro to something more modern.
