Too bad the game "Star Wars 1313" never saw the light of day. Literally, since sunlight was almost mythical in the lower levels of Coruscant. The idea that Coruscant, the most advanced and populous planet within the galaxy, had places on it which were not only uninhabitable, but also basically lost to legend, is intriguing. And it would be almost alienating if Coruscant didn't also have massive slums and ghettos to contrast the glittering skyscrapers on the surface. The game "The Phantom Menace" from 1999 wasn't exactly a masterpiece, but in one level you do descend down to one of the lower levels to rescue Queen Amidala as Captain Panaka. And I distinctly remember the underworld of Coruscant feeling almost crushing: Dark, dirty, cramped and dangerous as hell. The elevator trip back to the top was literally like being able to breathe again.

Maybe! I always had the impression from books and other media that the first few hundred levels are the places where you can expect any quality of life and the lower you go, the more desolate and poverty stricken it is, and the access routes up levels are usually pretty tightly controlled. The Thrawn novel (new one) had Pryce go down to level 56 I think it was for martial arts training and people there got the hell off the streets at "night" because of crime gangs that the Coruscant guard didn't have the resources to look into, so going down literally thousands of levels probably means there isn't a lot of upwards or downwards mobility and you know how third world countries in real life tend to have really poor areas getting extremely old hand-me-downs as charity or for purchase? It's probably way worse than that for levels where people will never, ever see the sky in their entire lives.

Imagine trying to conquer it militarily without simply bombing the whole city to pieces. A traditional invasion and conquest would be all but impossible if the defenders refused to surrender. It being a whole planet, let’s say it takes a year to conquer three layers with Star Wars military technology. You’re looking at literally thousands of years of fighting if they don’t surrender.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I figured the building materials had to be harvested from other bodies in the local solar system. As for the planets mass, wouldn't all those layers also increase the gravity of the planet? I am also shocked the planet hasn't imploded with all that weight pushing down on it. I had no idea the atmosphere was artificially maintained but that makes sense,

+Doctor Derpington It wouldn't have to be larger than Earth just because it's population is much higher. Most of Earths population is grouped together in small areas with much of our planet being uninhabited. Coruscant has people living over it's entire surface, many in high rise buildings. And then as this video discuses there are many layers also. It could technically be much smaller than Earth and still have the stated population. I'm not saying it is of course...

Jonathan Parker according to Wookieepedia Coruscant is 12240 kilometers in diameter, nearly twice Earth’s diameter(7917.5 km). Also, I remember reading that every inch of Coruscant was covered by city, there was not one inch of natural environment throughout the entire city/planet.

Don't be silly, silly! People don't need AIR PRESSURE in Star Wars! Just look at how they seem to survive in the vacuum of space just by putting any old helmet on! Or even that. Han and Leia survived inside the maw of a space worm while it had its mouth open directly to space. With nothing more than some breath masks. Air Pressure is meaningless. Just like having a lightsaber duel on a river of lava completely ignores how hot that proximity is, and how toxic the air is on a molten planet. These creatures that look like humans are obviously biologically superior to us and don't need petty things like Physics to tell them what to do.

If you could live without oxygen, daylight, and were immune to sickness and disease, you could live on Level 1, but still. The idea of mutated abominations dwelling at the bottom of Coruscant, roaming the ruined remains of the once proud city scapes is absolutely fascinating to me. Could such monsters live off of the garbage sent below by the upper inhabitants, possibly worshipping the deliveries as 'gifts' from the portal in the sky? Perhaps the noxious fumes generated over the millennia could be the only thing they could breathe, and taking them away from the depths could be akin to suffocating them. The lowest levels of Coruscant are locations practically begging to be written.

The Farthest down you can truly go on Coruscant is Level 0, Aka, The True Surface of Coruscant. One day, their should be a StarWars Series called “Levels of Coruscant”, and Each episode covers 5 Levels at a Time, all the way until we reach the last 7 levels, and when we reach the last 7 Levels, their is one Episode dedicated to one Level. Level 1 and Level 0 will be the last episodes, and probably the longest because both of those levels are so far down, they are so Mysterious, and they have been forgotten about. Also, the Number of levels is actually 5,127 Levels. And Level 0 is the true Ground Level.

Still.. where do they get oxygen from? what about volcanic activity.. earthquakes.. tektonic plates.. weather? .. it does not make any sense.. i know this is SF.. but this lacks logic

Everything about this planet is unnatural as the planet grew any and all material was removed and replaced by metal . The levels are held up by anti gravity devices so the extra mass of the planet is actually not a strain on the rotation or normal orbit of the planet . This may be sci fi but Lucas makes sure the nuts and bolts make sense !

It's been said that Star Wars technology is actually under-developed when you take into account how old their civilization is (I believe it's at least 200,000 years old) and has been rather stagnant (and sometimes regressed) for the last couple thousand years or so. We take for granted that technology will constantly and steadily advance, but one must wonder if we'll also hit a technological "brickwall" at some point.

If level one had no oxygen it is likely that level five had insufficient oxygen as well. Yet in the EU/Legends people lived on level one amidst everybody else's garbage. In RL, out in California the homeless live in encampments amid their own garbage and the possessions they scrounged from everybody else's garbage, and sometimes fires started in the encampments and damaged adjacent buildings. Also in RL Central, PA was abandoned because of spontaneous combustion of coal seams below the surface. So it is not inconceivable that Coruscant was utterly destroyed by a garbage fire on the lowest level.

Considering how much they can engineer, you'd think people would engineer larger and larger greenhouse like living zones at some point , level 1 being that cheap and forgotten. Maybe even movable structures , so you can keep them if the govt objects at some point.

Also now that the timeline has been fucked by disney, we lose the Yuhzan Vong War and it central characters, Anakin Solo, Mara Jade, Jacen Skywalker. Are now gone forever

"Ecoo-men-oh-palis" lol that's hilarious. It's more like "ecu-min-op-olus" but the "u" in ecu having a sound like "up" not "new". The correct way is much easier to say. I'm sure other accents have slightly different ways of saying ecumenopolis but the way it was said sounded like a fake alien word from starwars, which I imagine is the reason it was pronounced so weirdly in this video. Btw it's not a starwars term.
