We all have our favourite pub in the town, Its a shame our town has become a different town, It was once a catholic, cotton town, its now a foreign town, and that is alien to me !

Wouldn`t of recognised it if it wasn`t labelled, so used to walking to it from the other end past Jubilee, that photo must have been old, pre Waves. Punk rock pub as well.

there are many people from Blackburn who miss the old pubs as much as old friends, but to me l would say there are more people who really do miss their old terraced houses much more than the pubs,for me personally l would love to see a photo of our old street and if possible our old two up two down,,nice work colin,

There are some very nice pubs in Blackburn that are architecturally pleasing.

Blackburn Lad, yes me again. I just wanted to add that I"m from Massachusetts one of the states of New England and my hometown, Boston, and other towns, have the look of your Blackburn. : ) As I look at these photos, I am all, "Oh, that looks like my elementary school, or city hall, etc. even the railroad station, we had one in my city of Brockton when I was a child. I am with a mate who lives in another town, Lowell, MA and my god I fell in love with that city because it reminded me of my city, only, Lowell, I swear is definitely 85% looking like Blackburn. They have the similar brick and stone look of not only official bldgs. their houses look very much the same too. That is where my hometown differs. The collection photos are amazing and love the music you put to the videos and I'm looking over at the right side where other videos are shown and I see, your 1963 one with the song, "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying", I cry very easily and now I am off to view that video. You do not have to reply... ; )

Hi again Mary, a lot of the photos in my slideshows are well over 50 years old and to be honest, Blackburn really no longer resembles the town as portrayed in the photos. A lot of the ones I have used were taken by a guy called John Eddleston, way back in 1963 (so 57 or so years ago). He took his images just prior to the redevelopment of Blackburn town centre. Demolition began just a few weeks after his photos were taken. The town centre was transformed from its Victorian shopping streets and architecture into (what was then) a modern market and precinct (mall) built in a typical 1960's design. It has been redeveloped again in more recent times. Some of the compact residential streets, out of the town centre, remain as they were, Victorian terracing mainly, built for the operatives who toiled in the many mills and factories. Blackburn was a 'cotton town' producing textiles, but that industry declined in the 1920's / 30's. -- If you check out any more of my other slideshows, have a look at my own song (recorded in the mid 80's) 'She Used To Go Dancing'. Not too many pics of old Blackburn in it, but I appreciate hearing folks comments on it. -- When I hear the name New England, it always conjures up images of the lovely autumnal photos I have seen over the decades. Though I'm certain there's much, much more to those states than just the autumn's / fall's. Repeats of the TV show 'Cheers' are still shown here in the UK, weekday mornings on Channel 4.

Wow what a great video. Quite a few of these pubs bring back memories! Its a shame their not there any more, most of them. Although some have since shut down and re-opened again like The Jubilee. Them were the days! :)

Good one nice memories of black burns pub's Vulcan was my favourite and I got a genuine Vulcan beer garden sign hug up in my front room a bit of history there 👍

Some good old pubs there I frenquented over the years the good old barbary coast most gone now pubs closing today is really sad a sign of the times 🍻🍻👍

You missed some of my favourites: Dirty Duck,Youticks Nest, the Globe,,Top Hat......Top times top days picked up many a slapper in some of these joints !!!! thanks for the memories

Sorry to see that many of the pubs in the second half have now closed too.

Oh, I meant to say it is sad that there are those lost pubs gone, their gorgeous and quaint and yes happily it is not all doom & gloom, that there is light and hope, always, there is light and hope. : )

Funny how a lot of these pubs were thwaites houses, i am currently watching my local be knocked to the ground...The Blue Anchor, Fleetwood Road, Greenhalgh., Preston...another Thwaites establishment....Very sad to see it go.Great video,thanks for sharing!

The George hotel, on Darwen st, was the haunt of a few Rovers players, back in the day. Most notably, former Man City player, Harry McShane (father of the actor, Ian).

is it bad that I have had a drink in the vast majority of the pubs that are open?! I've always though that the Aqueduct is a beautiful building for a pub, I love the turret thing. It's so sad that so many more pubs have since closed

Royal Duke, used to reherse for Mexican Overdrive in there. Think it was the Royal going up towards Audley that i got my first pint at 14, One time the owner was passed out and the locals served us on a saturday afternoon. The George that is a Chinese now played a gig upstairs there as well.

Since this video some more pubs have gone. What a shame.

I only know about 35% of those.

The usual reasons cited Robert are the high prices the breweries charge the tenants for beer and rents, cheap alcohol in supermarkets, which means more people now drink at home and in the case of Blackburn, the change in the demographics. Blackburn has a substantial Asian population, the majority of whom are muslim and non drinkers. But that said, pubs are closing down all over the country, even in areas where there aren't large numbers of Asians / muslims.

Great memories especially the Vulcan with the footy table had a trip back to Blackburn last year after over 40 years what an eye opener used to work tom Mitchell's in king Street 1970 can't remember the name of the pub that was opposite still there but empty

Cheers. Glad you liked it. Thwaites can be sods. There's a few pubs in Blackburn that they owned and put up for sale, but they put certain restrictions on the sale, the main one being that the new owners can't carry on using it as a pub, ie it has to be used for other purposes. I don't think I know The Blue Anchor, though I've probably passed it in my car at times. At least Preston still has some decent pubs in the city centre, Blackburn hasn't. Best regards.

thanks for the memories lol i lived in Blackburn in the 90s worked in many of them pubs the ones i remember were Sam's bar, the swan, yates wine lodge, Mr Gs Manhattan heights, rovers return I think it was called the fountain at intack and the cellar bar

@nicolahalsall1 No it's not bad ;) Sadly, I'm old enough to have had a drink in most of the closed ones as well. I think there's only a handful of all the pubs on there that I haven't been in.

The Jubilee has reopened as a pub and there are new pubs opening across Blackburn, Darwen and Clitheroe since this vid was posted. What are closing are the leasehold brewery owned pubs.

A few of these shown are still pubs.

I was born and grew up in Blackburn although I live in Bristol now. My parents ran the Prince Arthur Hotel in Canterbury Street in the late fifties early sixties. The biggest reason for pubs closing down, down here ,is the proliferation of apartment buildings. Once the people move in they complain about the noise, even though the pub was there first, and get it closed. Read any CAMRA newsheet and they will say the same.

That may be the case in Bristol and elsewhere Steven, but I can't think of a single instance in Blackburn where that has happened. Many of the pubs that have closed here are in the town centre, nowhere near residential areas. The Prince Arthur has fewer houses (or apartment dwellings) near it now, than in your time, yet it closed and ironically, is now divided up into flats, so in essence, is an apartment building. In the early 80's, I was in a band and we rehearsed in the cellar of your old home for a while, whilst it was still an open pub. In the late 80's and into the 90's, it became a club, The Last Resort, then Flames and the finally Mojos an R & B club, with live bands.

Thanks for the comment Blackburn lad. Nice to hear what happened to the old place. In my Dads day it was the regular haunt of firemen, army lads from Canterbury street barracks and the abattoir boys. Not a particularly golden part of my youth as I ended up being sent to Accrington Road school and not Witton Park which was next to our old house on Higher Witton Road. Much to my Mothers fury! I drove down past the old pub a couple of years ago and was astounded by the changes. The whole area where my Gran lived, Taylor street, gone! I still go to see the Rovers when I can the last game being Forest in the cup. I enjoyed seeing the old pubs and especially the ones I used to get left outside with a bag of crisps! The Boars Head on Wensley Street was my parents local and I went to Wensley Fold school as a nipper. Keep up the good work.

Blackburn Lad shout out to, Moist in town, the Grapes in town, the white bull in town (a different one) and most of the others in town.

First pub i ever had a pint in was the veteran glad you got it in !!!! I'm a Times man now I don't like the postal order last orders is OK aswell but apart from that ? Oh sorry the drummers is a nice little spot

oops. The music spoilt it.

My grandparents owned a pub once, I wonder what it was though, i'll ask :)

I can remember a lot of these pubs, and it's over 50 years since I lived in Blackburn. Strange, whilst I was talking to my wife about it, she daid my accent was coming back! I used to catch the bus to St Mary's, and get off/on at the Hole I'th wall. I remember wondering what the hell it was when I was told that would be the stop I wanted! I noticed nearly all the pubs were Thwaites, glad to see the brewery is still going. I have a glass of Lancaster bomber by my side (LOL). It will be Wainwrights tomorrow! There have been questions as to why the pubs are closing. One reason is the changing demographic. With a large Muslim population, who don't drink, that won't help. That's a statement of fact, not a racialist comment, by the way. Sad to see the decline of my "home" town, reflected in the life of these pubs, though.

The Thwaites brewery you mention in your comment is there "NO MORE" it got demolished last summer (2019) all in the name of progress. I suppose nothing lasts for ever.

@@UKGX4 That's heartbreaking. A few years ago, my local brewery, Moreland, was taken over by Greene King. All they wanted was the pubs. And Old Speckled hen. They sold off the brewery for housing. A guy from GK was interviewed and asked about Hen. "We will stick to the recipe" was his mantra, even though the interviewer kept asking about the different water. GK has now introduced a line of "Hen" beers, totally ignoring the fact that the original related to an MG (Abingdon brand!) car, not a bloody farm fowl!

@@UKGX4 Sadly, most of us are responsible for the closing of pubs, we don't go as often as we used to. In my dad's day, and the earlier part of mine, pubs could survive on alcohol sales and they were mainly a man's domain. The prosperous ones now are mini restaurants. Families are needed to keep going. That said, greedy brewers and heavy tax don't help.

Absolutely right on all counts and it also doesn't help when drinking communities are replaced with non drinking communities...we could go on and on mate, bottom line IMO is what they have done to many towns and cities in this country is beyond treason

Memories! I bought my first beer in the Forrest’s Arms on Wenslyfold. It was December 1979 and I was 13. Just finished carol singing at doors to earn a few quid. Had my school uniform on under my snorkel Parka (but took my tie off). Had four halves of mild and a Hamlet cigar! Got to laugh. I was asked my age though, but landlord clearly did not care that answered 18 but clearly looked 13. Drank in many of these pubs across the years. So much nostalgia. Did not much matter that I was only allowed a bath once a week or the frost on the inside of the bedroom window, just seemed a much better time than now. Can’t accuse me of being drunk, I only drank mild.

Read the third panel at the start of the vid Rob. It was never meant to be a complete record of all of Blackburn's lost pubs, just a snapshot. There's a great book called Blackburn's Lost Inns that lists 495 pubs (most of them now 'lost'). If I had have named all those, this vid would be longer than 'Dances With Wolves' :-)

Thanks for your input. I'm well aware the Aqueduct and Albion are closed. I could add a few more that have closed in the last 2 years. I do state in the third blue panel at the start, that it is an incomplete record. We could go on forever about pubs that aren't included, some from long ago and some recent closures. My slide show is a snapshot in time and a pretty accurate depiction of how things were at the time of compiling it, that's all. It was never meant to be an up to the minute catalogue of closed Blackburn pubs.
