The Lost Art
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Nobody is denying that we live in a dynamic and exhilarating world when it comes to technology, but now and then we need to step back and smell the non-digital roses.
Some trades have all but succumbed entirely to digitalization, and sign painting is one of them. You can now have any sign, any size, any typeface you want, but there is something most alluring about a sign which has been painstakingly drawn; master sign painter TJ Guzzardi knows all about this business. Working out of a funky warehouse in downtown Tullamarine, TJ is pumping out signs quicker than you can say “1956”.
As a youngster, TJ helped his dad build and restore hot rods, when he tried his hand at pin striping - an art form well entrenched in the rockabilly subculture. TJ started out striping cars and bikes and then moved into more traditional typeface fonts. Making signs for friends and family as a hobby, soon enough he found that his reputation as one of few sign painters around was spreading rapidly.
Fast forward to today, TJ is flat out painting beautiful signage for some of Australia’s favorite and iconic haunts. With clients such as Porteno in Sydney and Shawcross Pizza in Fitzroy, the day Milk Bar met TJ he was flicking his brush over the interior and exterior of what is soon to become Melbourne’s newest food van for Chingon; a stunning copper beauty to complement their Mexican cantina in Richmond.
“People have lost themselves in convenience, there aren’t too many of us in the trade anymore and I want to show people the beauty of what a true piece of craftsmanship is,” remarks TJ.
“Work is coming in steadily and I always welcome more challenging and larger jobs-give me a surface, I’ll paint it.” TJ is currently decking out The Beaufort hotel in Carlton with his beautiful craftsmanship where, if you’re quick, you may just catch him in action.

I was a sign guy for 20+ years, did alot of vinyl letters, airbrushing painted carved signs, printed truck wraps, etc...the typical quick buck hack sign shop stuff....once I was at a sign convention in Atlantic City I saw a pinstriper/letterhead guy striping an old 50s ford panel truck with both hands at the same time......he could stop mid way through pulling a line talk to you go right back and keep going, you could not tell where he stopped, the rear doors and hood had an elaborate scroll design he did symetrically with both hands at the same time......it was absolutely wild and fun to watch a real artist enjoying his craft like that.....nothing compares to a real hand lettered job especially on an old restored race car, airplane, train etc.
56 years old...... I'm just falling in love with hanfcrafted things. I started with my old motorcycle helmet two years ago. Every time i See a pinstriper in action i can't take my eyes off. Great job!! Cheers from 💚🤍❤️
As a sign artist of 20+ years who learned it from an elderly guy when I was in my 20's, it makes me happy to see it continued by the next generation. I don't get to do it very often anymore, too busy buildeing modern signage, but love my job when i get to. LOVE IT!! keep it up!
My dad was a self taught sign writer. He was the best about in many people option. Sadly he's not able to do it anymore. A dying art. Keep er lit 🇮🇪
Im 24 since i can remember i did stuff like this like this. Something about showing off your work nothing but your own true skills & years of trial & error. I tried getting into selling & doing stuff like this but seems like not many people care for this & those who do want a great job & want to pay a penny Just another weekend hobby. Congrats for making it
"Get some 'terps out... start again" I wish that worked for relationships
Nice work... takes me back to the early 1900s , not that I was around then, I’m 43 yrs. young, but that’s what beautiful art does..... takes u to that time and place.......

Great to see aussie artist from the north west suburbs of Melbourne highlighted. Great talent.

great video. one comment mentioned about this not being a lost art. I guess he didn't pick up the fact that it was sign painting. my brother in law's father was in this business. and yes there's not many sign painter's around, at least this type. many just use stencils and spray guns.

People have to convince themselves their technological laziness is evolution rather than the good old fashioned laziness it really is. You would be amazed how insecure people become anytime you mention somebody being good at something too. They think everybody should be equal, despite the hard work some of us put in to be excellent. Like musicians, they are convinced they made a deal with the devil. They can't believe somebody might have actually devoted their life to a craft, something besides their own self interest

@@LongWalkFilms a lot of the people I come across are put off by the unique or the marvelous. I see instead a sad desperate attempt to "fit in." I.e Instagram, fb, snapcbat, etc. cultures that encourage mediocrity. On the other hand, we are just around the corner from a new decade and the changes I see look good
Nice video. And I dig the music.

I see flaws, but his last comment says it ALL! Live long and be happy buddy. Not to mention his work is DAMN good. And no disrespect was intended.
Hand Lettering is not dead .Big Macks and tow trucks still use it as well as bikes and hot rods ,plus race cars. Vinyl is just a tool to manipulate 1-Shot. Vinyl is not for letters.

Yep Ill give him full credit on making a career out of our art, but Id say go learn how to do it properly, as a signwriter myself, 25yrs in, first thing I noticed is his paint is too thick on the brush, BUT its fantastic to see younger ones coming thru my trade

New Jersey is (was) one of the most respected bastions of hand lettering in the U.S.A. I traveled this nation for almost eighteen years pinstriping motorcycles ,hot rods ,and Custom cars, met many signmen across this nation ,most are still my friends to this day, and their talents are right up their with the GOAT . This and hand pinstriping are by no means dead, one of the tools that I make is a gridding tool that helps with symmetry , since 2009 I have sold 16,000 ! Doesn’t sound like it’s dyeing does it? I’ve also got brushes out that make learning fun, lettering or pinstriping doesn’t matter, I’ve changed the norm in design, and they are actually fun to work with..I will not let this art form die! It’s just too valuable, watch Davidographicsguy videos on you tube!
Used to be a sign painter when young. Really hard work little return. Bad decision.

You seem to be confusing your own limited experience with everybody else. You could have learnt from those mistakes and prevented them from happening again instead of being bitter about it, And hours for a couple of hundred? A lot of people get that for a week so grow up and get some perspective.

@@rockabillycat1954 Honestly, even here in NYC there is a TON of handpainting done on elaborate signage, building facades, menu boards, etc. I don't usually do that type of work but there's so much outdoor painting here, I was contacted & recently assisted with painting the characters in a community center mural
Please try to get the soundtrack more balanced.....

To do it correctly you need to use a maulstick. Properly used, your work will look professional instead of how it looks now. I've been in the graphic arts business for 42 years,so I know what I'm talking about!
