The Lost Alfa Romeo "10C" Project
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The stuff that ends on an automaker's cutting room floor makes for some truly fascinating "what if" scenarios, especially if that automaker is everyone's favorite: Alfa Romeo.
One of the most tantalizing yet lesser-known of these "might have been" stories took place in the late 1980s, when a small group of Alfa Romeo powertrain and bodywork engineers got the enviable task of studying an advanced high-performance coupé known internally as "10C."
The codename was a direct reference to its powerplant: no less than a 4067cc, naturally-aspirated, 72° V10.
The prototype engine already produced around 340 HP during its first runs on Arese's benches, a figure that could have been increased further with the necessary development.
But it was not to be.
By the decade's end, with the world's economy heading into recession and the market for high-end sports cars tanking, the Alfa Romeo "10C" project was canceled before any prototype chassis was constructed.
Because of that, precious little information exists about it, and here's its story...

A stunning looking car & any Alfisti watching this video can just imagine the glorious sound the V10 would've made
Love the detail of the shield on the nose of the white coupe design.
I can only imagine the reaction of the management at Fiat when they heard about a V10 engine 😂

Ferrari took Pino D'Agostino, the creator of the Alfa V10, to work on Schumi's F1 V10, he became Schumi's chief mechanic
Wow, this is some inner circle knowledge. Thank you for this. I'm infected by Alfa and these uncompleted projects hurt me emotionally, if that makes any sense. Just imagine in an alternate universe there are Zeta 6s, Proteos 164, Scigheras and this 10c coupe driving about.

Glad you appreciated it :) Alfa’s catalog of never made cars it is indeed fascinating, perhaps more than any other manufacturer’s.
The new Giulia Zagato seems like a modern interpretation of this one, the rear and the headlights at least to me feel very similar!

It's more like 80's version of TZ3. An Alfa romeo supercar with a V10 engine. But instead we got SZ and RZ.
Strikes me the 8C built of the Maserati chassis, was a close representation to the 10C. Beautiful car, incredible number of ideas that came from the Alfa staff.
Amazing proposal, very aggressive
Happy Holidays Alfistis! Thank-you again.
Interesting, never heard of this before. I feel Alfa Romeo should always have a few high end sports model like this that would rival the likes of Ferrari or Porsche.

Thank you, again a very interesting story.
Haha ..i didnt know there is a 10C...thnks for video Matteo
When ever I think I know a thing or two about Alfa, Matteo releases a new video... Thanks a lot for this, interesting as always. Happy New Year! Ciao

Interesting how Alfa often stopped the development of some special cars due to recession like those will be bought by normal people and working class, also Alfa's sales were always so low that it seems like the recession probably never struck them really hard like some other mass market brands. :)

i wonder the same…many say that the GT car era cane to an end because of the oil crisis in ‘73. really? the owners of a 250 GT or espada couldn’t afford the petrol bill anymore?
Wish that hadnt got away.....Could you imagine it getting refined for production?Would have surely sold out!

Fascinating. Reminds of BMW M3 Coupe - Clownshoe - only the 10C is a decade before. Thanks for a wonderful year of vids, mate. Looking forward to more of your work in 2023 🥂

Thank you!!! I’ll try to do more and better videos in 2023, rest assured
V-10 Alfa could have gone head to head with the German’s V-12 BMW and VW of the 90s. Being a creative in any field is a pain. It’s design by committee, - that includes accountants, sales representatives, lawyers, etc. I worked for Disney and Paramount eons ago uuuugh!

Oh yes, I also have that experience, having been a car designer: you put all your enthusiasm creating something, then the grind of corporate decision making kills it off…
The familiar Alfetta wedge; with upswept fixed rear window and kamm tail.
The front lived on on the 155?!
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
I think we can safely say that resemblance wasn't purely coincidental, as that 10C mock up was designed by no less than Ercole Spada, then in force at the IDEA Institute and the designer of, you guessed it, the 155 :)
Thank you for another interesting video on Alfa Romeo history.
I tend to Like your videos before I even watch them , because I know that I will. Is there a car company with a greater number of glorious 'what if?' projects than Alfa? I think not.

It's hard to wrap your head around how many projects have been shelved everywhere, the right industry veterans put aside for more financially savvy people but in Alfa Romeo's case, it's hard to justify why these projects never happened considering how much the brand meant/s to the public and being backed by the government. Perhaps this is part of the problem compounded by "businessmen" more capable of crunching numbers than gauging public interest. Almost everywhere we turn our attention to these days, glorious old companies are run by non-industry experts but number-crunchers who are more interested in pleasing Wall Street than long-term business sustainability. It's rampant. I'm going to build a 33 Stradale from scratch and another electric version, a Montreal, an AlfaSud 6C, and that V10 project... yes sirry, in my wildest dreams :)
@Matteo_Licata

Well, it happens at every automaker. Only a minor part of what's thought up ever reaches the road. And sometimes that can also be for the better...
Looks like it materialised as TZ3 Stradale.

Yeah, sort of! I wonder how Zagato managed to get permission to use the Alfa logo on that Dodge Viper-based project it did well before FCA existed
Matteo, thank you for that great Video. My first thought, as i read the title of the Video, was "OK, that means for sure the SE048SP". Failed. It´s a real pity that this Project died in that early stage. Some details of the back look a litte bit like a Nissan 300ZX, but the complete shape reminds of earlier Alfa´s, especially Zagatos with their "Kamm-" Tail. Thank you again, Matteo for that excellent Video
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! The Zagato-esque flavor may not be accidental, after all: the 10C model shown in the video was designed by Ercole Spada, the man who designed all of Zagato's 1960s icons!
Much better looking and more powerful version of SZ and RZ.
This would have been faster than any other front engine at that time. wow.
Very unfortunate that Alfa-Lancia industriale's (as the concern was called at the time) top brass did not go ahead with the project-which would have turned out to be Italy's Dodge Viper- Let me take this opportunity, dear Matteo, to wish you and your loved ones a very happy and prosperous new year 2023. By the way, Is Ing. Chirico's book available in English?
@Matteo_Licata

Kudos to you for remembering about Alfa Lancia Industriale: my videos really have the best viewers! 👍 Thank you, wish you a happy new year too. Mr. Chirico’s book was only published in Italian and by now it’s pretty much unobtanium.
Why don‘t they start initiating the design process for a halo car as soon as a recession hits? It would be ready for production by the time of the next period of economic expansion for sure!
Thanks again, Matteo. To be honest - I'm glad they didn' t realize the 10C... Why ? Because I would have done stupid things to get the money for buying one...
I remember the 164 look -a - like with the wing on the back , but the 10C , I never heard off. Looks like it would have been a high speed GT in Supercar bracket, especially with that engine.
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
Indeed. By the way, the wing on the back of the 164 Procar was all but ineffective, as it was too small. Development driver Giorgio Francia once lost it and didn’t realize it wasn’t there.
I saw a spy shot of a coupe based on the 166, back in 1997... I loved it, it was never produced.. Can you help me find it? I can't find it anywhere...
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
Apart from the Bertone Bella concept car, I personally don’t recall any coupè study based on the 166. But I’m intrigued, I’ll see if I can find anything
Was the 10C V10 all-new or were elements influenced by Alfa Romeo's other engine designs? Notably it appears only the road-going Toyota LR V10 standards out as having a similar 72-degree unless other V10s featured the same angle.
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the only info publicly available about this project are from the book I mentioned, and it’s not much. What it’s clear is that it was an all-new design that didn’t share anything with any other Alfa engine existing or in development at the time.
Does it have anything to do with Bristol Fighter? Or that Viper-derived Alfa***? They've definitely got a similar vibe going on. Beyond just being V10.
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
I think it’s just the similar package. Having a large engine placed longitudinally just creates that sort of proportions
Now that is a cool story😎 Does this mean, that this V10 was one of the last all-new Alfa Romeo engine designs ever?
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
It seems we can say that, yes. Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
A rival to the 1990 BMW M8 V12, also defeated by economics.
Somehow reminds me of the current Giulia
PS: I like the design, very ‚serious‘ looking, not just like an expensive toy. A bit of Mercedes (not literally) in the solidity of the volumes.
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
We can't really comment on the design, as the project was cancelled before proper development started, so that model was no more than a rough idea: who knows how it would have ended up looking, had it progressed further!

OMG ! .....Alfa where is this V10??
why a V10 ? Alfa ,Maserati and even Lancia (Thema) could have shared a Ferrari V8, tailored to the needs of each brand. In addition to a joint chassis and other components it could have been a viable project.But maybe this is not an Italian thing, where every brand used to jealously protects its own progress instead of a joint effort. Steve Nichols a former F1 head of engineering explained that even inside Ferrari F1 the branches for chassis,engine and testing kept information instead of sharing it. Hopefully a thing of the past in the industry.
@Matteo_Licata

I don’t know precisely why such decisions were made, but I do know from all my studying of Alfa’s history that their engineers were a very proud bunch, so only an Alfa engine could do :)
Alfa 155 front design is heavily influenced from this project ...
@Matteo_Licata
Жыл бұрын
The 155 was styled by the same man, so the similarity may not be coincidental at all :)
Sadly there has to be a balance between economics and numbers versus a Halo brand car. @ 9000 4C...500 8C ..in all reality how many 10C would have been made? 300 at most. A profit? ..I'm guessing no way. With Stellantis holding the purse strings the brands only have 8 years to become sustainable or the axe will be out...ATM, only a car that sells will be made, and we all know that is a 2 box shape.😖😕😄
