Believe me when I say this was torture. I wasn’t directly affected by the jam but it was painful enough. Those few days, I was in Tianjin (neighbouring city) and was just about to head into Beijing. The traffic jam literally clogged entrance to the capital city and it became next to impossible to get in without a jam. We had to gamble which road to take to minimise the wait time and in the end our group had split up into two groups - one taking a highway into Beijing while the other taking train. I took the train as I just didn’t want to gamble my time and I had the cash to spend anyways. Upon arriving at the train station it was literally jam packed with people. The stations were busy enough now they had to handle the influx of people smart enough to take train. Extra card were sent out to meet demand but it still wasn’t enough. In the end we had to purchase tickets from a third party (at a markup that is) and boarded a high-speed railway heading for Beijing. The train took 45 minutes but just the wait time and ticket-nothing took us the entire day alone. We set off at 8 in the morning. But didn’t arrive until 2am. The other group wasn’t so lucky, despite having chosen a fairly (and I use fairly with air quotes) uncongested road, it still took them until 10 the other day to get here. The traffic jam affected more people than you’d imagine, raw materials were unable to import, drivers unable to get to where they’re going… it was a disaster for the Chinese government and really does show - no matter how good your rail network is, you can’t skimp out on roads.

What about this incident told you that the roads were the problem? If you have such a huge spike in traffic levels that means your alternate modes of transport are not keeping up with demand and people are compelled to drive. Obviously you don’t completely neglect roads but traffic just means people are struggling to get where they need to go - and motor vehicles are by far the least efficient mass mover of people.

If you look at the map of Beijing, you’ll find we have on of the most paved road cities and the most polluted (for our population). The problem isn’t with roads, we already have too much of that, it’s the city planning that needs improving.

I still believe something could be done but the root of the problem isn’t bad roads, it’s the fact that people move about too often. @@DesertStateNevada nah bro 💀💀 Reasons why adding lanes is bad: 1, discourages walking. Personally, i wouldn't like to walk nor cycle near a 5 lane road in the suburbs 2, increases traffic. Studies have shown that adding more lanes makes people start to drive when they once walked before because they think there will be more space 3, cost. Destroying houses and pavement is costly and just annoys people for a month just so that there will be more noise There's more but I honestly can't be bothered to type

FYI if you want to reduce inner city traffic, Stockholm solved that problem: inner city car travel tolls. Also, if you want public transport to be safer, maybe having an anonymous Air Marshal type roll on random buses would greatly help.
