    Flying across the North Atlantic in a piston single, in December no less, takes some serious guts. Even in one of the very best piston singles like an SR22T. I really was on pins and needles with that approach in Canada where the ceiling was down around 600 feet and you called out the MDA as being 289 feet. You can cross that one off your bucket list...

    There is an entire service industry around these kind of ferry flights for GA. It is very common to purchase an aircraft from one country and have a ferry service deliver it. The route flown here is a common ferry route from Europe. Of course not to detract anything from this video, not an easy trip.

Thanks for the participation of traveling along with you. The film taken reflects a great reason of getting the Instrument rating ALONG WITH QUALIFIED EXPERIENCE. Great shots of the weather conditions, approaches, etc. As you said in your comments, it took a lot of planning and having someone having the knowledge and experience of having done it before several times. Weather was not ideal but it does give what good weather and bad weather look like. A lot of years ago, I knew a friend who flew single engine using extended internal fuel bladders to fly to England/Ireland/Scotland area. Another one flew from Hawaii to San Franciso in single engine plan with fuel bladders, etc. Your trip really perked me up - have made 80 - and you have really peaked up my interests. Thank you Jose. We wore cold-water survival suits for the overwater flights, two life rafts, life jackets, GPS-based personal locator beacons, satellite communication through the Cirrus Global Connect in the aircraft, and of course a flight plan with reporting points. We had the Travel-John relief bottles but didn't need them. With it being a winter crossing, the 6 or so hours a day of daylight was the biggest limit on how much we could fly on a given day - we didn't want to be over water in the dark. I think about 4 1/2 hours was the longest leg and that was between Iqaluit and Kuujjuarapik in northern Canada.

    Keeping it simple, what a great video, thank you! No dramatic music, no yeehaa's, nice calm and well chosen words with the nice txt banners for info, just let the amazing footage tell the story, very, very enjoyable. As someone else mentioned, the Kulusuk app was like nothing you would ever dream of seeing, so beautiful and unreal colours! The mountains looked so sharp in the film too. Is this aircraft equipped with the BRS or have you another plan if the donk quits? Absolutely inspiring video and this is one offer that may make me happy to do another 30 odd hrs of almost straight and level! You now have those memories that I am sure will stay vivid in your mind for longer than most memories? Happy landings for the future!

Do you ever feel a bit tentative when you are over water and cannot see land for as far as the eye can see?? I'm fully aware that's the reason for the survival gear. Overwater legs this long were a first for me, but I've flown to the Bahamas from Florida several times and that also feels a bit uneasy. All I know to do is to prepare as well as possible and always be in communication with ATC. Still doesn't take away that feeling...

    Thank you Richard! You’re right…I did find flying in Europe much different than in the US. Really don’t understand why all the restrictions as none of them seemed safety related at all. The autopilot error message indicated a stuck key, but I don’t think that was really the problem. Garmin replaced the whole unit under warranty when I got back so all good now. Thank you for the kind words…come fly with us in the US if you get a chance!

    This is incredible, Rob. Like, breathtakingly incredible. I live in the New York area but I've been to Europe many times (my family is from the former Yugoslavia) and I've never seen Europe or the world like this. What a refreshing new experience! Now, I'm not a pilot. I'm an avid flight simmer and dreaming of getting my PPL one day. So bear that in mind as I ask this and pardon my ignorance here, if any. Were you largely able to stick to your initial intended flight plan or did you have to make deviations along the way, either because of departure/arrival delays, airport closures, or weather conditions? And if so, did that affect how long it took you to get home in a significant way? What were your considerations for if you could make a certain leg of the trip happen or not? Time of day? Whether you'd have to fly IFR conditions vs VFR? Basically, what I'm asking is, for the most part, what comes in to play decision making wise for a trip like this? This was a very entertaining and fascinating video, and the scenery is breathtaking! Thanks again for sharing and sorry for the million questions! Curiosity got me lol

    Hi SJ! Very glad you enjoyed it. We were able to stick to the original route with the exception of the leg between Iqaluit and Kuujjuarapik. We wanted to go all the way to Moosonee on that leg but the headwinds were too much. Other than than, the route stayed the same, but the schedule had to be flexible. There was only about 6 hours of daylight each day that far north this time of year and we didn't want to be over water in the dark. That limited us the most. Weather was a big factor - we flew in some bad but manageable conditions because there always seemed to be another front with worse weather coming. Thank you for the kind words. I posted details of each leg as well as the .kml files for Google Earth for anyone wanting to sim this flight in the description.

  • @robblack5483

    @robblack5483

    2 жыл бұрын

    100L ranged from $7 to $11/gallon, but it was the TKS that really got us - $35 - $40/gallon. Availability of 100LL was an issue in Canada south of Iqaluit - there were only a couple options at the time which drove our decision to go to CYGW. Covid testing was a real question but it turned at that the aircrew exception applied so we just had to show vax cards and recent PRC at each entry - not get tested at every stop. Customs wasn't an issue as they all seemed used to this sort of thing. US entry was also easy as we made sure the ton of import/registration/declarations, etc. were all done beforehand.
