The Long Island Serial Killer and Jack the Ripper. Part 1.

Welcome to the House of Lechmere
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, LIKE AND SHARE!
In this episode Edward Stow examines the murders attributed to what is known as the Long Island Serial Killer, otherwise known as the Gilgo Beach Beach Murders or the Craigslist Murders
In Part 2, I will be looking directly at a long list of comparisons between the Long Island case and the Jack the Ripper Murders, with particular reference to the suspect called Charles Lechmere.
If you are new to this channel then please watch the other videos to familiarise yourself with the case against Charles Lechmere, otherwise known as Charles Cross as the most likely suspect to be the man known to history as Jack the Ripper. I particularly recommend the following Playlists/Podcasts:
Jack the Ripper: The Evidence for Guilt; and
Lechmere and the Whitechapel Murders.

The commonalities I see is both were family men, both were gainfully employed, and in both cases the perpetrators were linked geographically in close proximity to were they lived. Be informative to clear this up. Or not…it’s not really our business if she believes the charges or not (even tho her hair was found on 3 of the 4 Gilgo victims).

Hey Ed, good episode! The similarities I noticed are, they both lived, worked and (allegedly) committed their crimes in the same area. They were both dismemberment, sexual serial killers that dispatched their victims via strangulation. They both dumped their victims in places they knew would eventually be found. They both had bad relationships with their fathers. and they were both had families. I look forward to part 2 and more!

One significant way in which they do differ, however, is that Charles Allen Lechmere - assuming he was Jack the Ripper - lived slightly outside the killing fields. That makes him a type of murderer called a “poacher” (structured, organised, opportunistic), doing his killing in transit through the area on his way to and from work, his mother’s, etc. Rex Heuermann, on the other hand, if he’s the guilty party, lives precisely within the geographical confines of the likely places where these women were murdered, which thus makes him more of a “marauder”. He, too, seems to be structured and organised, but unlike Jack the Ripper, not so opportunistic. As for the MO and signatures, other similarities also exist (assuming Lechmere is also the Thames torso killer), but what the respective cases show is that it is improbable - almost to the point of impossibility - for two serial killers to co-exist within the same geographical space, at the same time, using the same MO, and possessing the same distinctive signature. This is what suggests that Lechmere, if he is Jack the Ripper, is also quite probably the Thames torso killer, too. All of which is to say that Ed’s put together another excellent and thought-provoking episode, one which sheds further light on JtR (certainly the case against Lechmere, at any rate).

  • @davesmith7432

    @davesmith7432

Hey, thanks for the insightful points. We pretty much agree. I think, perhaps, you’re splitting hairs. Basically, we’re looking at 2 serial killers that operated in a comfort zone close to where they live and work. About the probability of two serial killers operating at the same time, I agree with you. And here’s something to pack it up. According to the FBI database, during the 1970s 80s and 90s in the United States there was anywhere from 50 to 100 active serial killers at any time in those decades, the heyday of those killers. So, serial killers are rare and dismemberment. Serial killers are only a fraction of that group. country of 330 million people in the 1900 census, there was only about 40 million people in all of the UK about 4 million in London and maybe 80 K in WhiteChapel. The odds that there were two killers committing those two different crime spree’s are astronomical. But one could argue, it did happen! Herbert Mullin and Ed Kemper both killed and dismembered some of their victims in Santa Cruz from 1972 -73. I don’t think it counts as the same MO. Because Kemper only dismembered his mom. Interestingly, these crimes occurred 100 years after the first Thames Torso murder. Charles Lechmere was 23 in 1872 and only 39 on august 31, 1888. Well within the ideal age range, do you have committed both series of murders. And probably more.

Hi Ed, nice job. I have been following the Gilgo Beach Case. Crossovers with Lechmere (assuming he is the Ripper): 1. somebody who targeted vulnerable (petite or drunk) prostitutes 2. a family man who didn't stick out as a crazed killer. 3. somebody who lived close to where the bodies were found (and presumably hunted in familiar territory) 4. somebody who taunted police or family members (From Hell Letter and Huermann's call to family members) 5. somebody who followed their cases closely (Lechmere in the papers/Huermann online) 6. somebody who seemingly just stopped or had a sustained cooling off period

Thanks for your research Ed, you pointed out things I didn't know. I have been reading about this case for quite a while, two of the girls victims were driven away to go somewhere, and they left their handbags and mobiles at home, they must have felt safe, but they were never seen again. Good memory Ed to remember allt hat text. Shannan Gilbert didn't want to leave the house she was in, she was afraid the persons outside were going to tke her away and murder her. I think she knew about the killer cult that was connected with these Gilgo murders. She shouted 'Ow!' as she ran away , I think somebody tried to frab her.----It was reported that in 1888 a police officer saw a message written on the wall believed to be by Jack the Ripper, it sid I will go to 15 then stop, In 1888 the murder victims were believed to be Emma Elizabeth Smith, Martha Tabram, Mary Nichols, Annie Chapman, sunday 23 September the body of a young woman on the roadside killed and sisembowelled with the MO , and believed to be by Jack the Ripper, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, possibly Catherine Harris, Mary Kelly.

Likewise unidentified possible victim known as 'Cherries' may likewise have been marked. Also Valerie Mack may have had a tattoo - as her killer amputated her foot unusually high above the ankle, it's been speculated to hide an identifying tattoo. While Jessica Taylor had a tattoo mutilated by her killer. It would be interesting to know what Taylor's tattoo was.

Happy to have a new video from you 😊 I'm used to watching criminology stuff, but somehow it was hard for me to listen about this long list of murdered people in that weird psycho's dumping grounds, it's like you make it sound more real somehow. About the Amittyville house... It was particularly notorious because some of its new owners made it so, probably for financial gain, but there are so many family annihilators and so many murderers in the US, it's not like a psycho is going to be at a loss for blueprints or inspiration, and I wonder how many houses there are which can still be sold full price for lack of a dark past. I mean, even if they don't turn it into a "hobby" or "lifestyle" like serial killers do, it's like in certain cultures people consider killing people as a more or less acceptable option in their lives. What is your opinion on the dismemberments? We're quite shocked in my country, Spain, at the moment, because a young man from a family of celebrities decided to kill and quarter his "sugar daddy" into 14 pieces while on holiday in Thailand. I mean, even if you consider killing as the only choice you have in a given situation (it wasn't), doesn't it take a special type of stomach to quarter your victim afterwards? Plus, it's like he's either a sadist or stupid, because there are both surveilance cameras all over the place and death penalty in Thailand... 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyway, congratulations on your work! Looking forward to the next video!

I can tell you by personal experience that people in Suffolk county tend toward superstitious more than not. In general, if you're Catholic and there's any kind of ghost legend or rumor in your area, you take it seriously - too seriously - comically and dramatically as well; crossing themselves and clutching their many crucifixes and gold Saint medallions chained around their neck . So, if this Rex guy is typical of the area, he probably was fascinated by the Amity murders and the alleged subsequent hauntings growing up. And then there's Fire Island... 😬

Okay about the belt with initials that work both ways. Isn’t there usually some wear and tear on a belt that shows which side was up? Wouldn’t that shed light on the initials? Why are there no photos of the whole belt? And why on earth use sometimes expensive belts when there’s got to be a boatload of rope available at the local store. Any store. Hmmm

There is a whole ton of evidence on the long island case, not a lot on Lechmere though the geography is very similar, as well as similarities to the Torso murders. Definitely a similar connection. There seems to be no evidence of Lechmeres character. Also the way the murders stopped is similar, fear of being caught... must've lived in a hellish nightmare

waiting for his wife to be away suggests to me that he may have wanted to keep the person or some souvenirs in that private vault under his house to play with for a while. Or in his lock-up. The other reason could be that whatever he did with them took a long time and his absence would've been noticed, hence the need for his wife to be away. So i don't imagine it was quick for them, unless he was a necrophiliac. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the vault and the lock-up. The difficulty of getting them to go into either place suggests that if he did take them there, they were either already dead or drugged upon arrival. It is unusual for there to be such a long gap between killings so probably there are others elsewhere waiting to be found. Im also wondering if he held onto the skulls and other body parts, which might go some way to explaining why it took so long for them to be found

@@thehouseoflechmere9407 As for crossovers, the obvious is geographical proximity to the murders, he's employed, and on the surface he is respectable, married, apparently stable, controlled in his methods. Both target prostitutes and i think you make an interesting comment about him killing some but not others, and i agree this could be due to either being triggered or the type of woman didnt quite fit his personal victim criteria, or things like mood, time etc. Some serial killers do get off on the idea of possibly killing the person they are with, and the person not knowing that their life is hanging in the balance throughout the meeting. It's the power over life and death that gives the thrill here. The cutting of the body which may or may not have involved releasing the torso first, but definitely scattering the body parts, and i would suggest this guy possibly held onto some body parts to delay identification so as to blur any memorable links to him. They may both also have a 'deviant complex' where in their minds they can rationalise they are doing something morally good in taking out people they see as immoral deviants. Non-crossovers would seem to be his apparent lack of the need to humiliate the body and dissect it for sexual purposes, his sexual use of both men and women, the list of kinks, which we can only guess with Lechmere. This guy seems to hate women less than Lechmere, due to him being able to switch between genders for victims, putting him in the extreme misanthrope category rather than the purely misogynistic one, though as yet we don't know the full extent of either man's murderous output. This guy may also have homosexual leanings. But another great video. Thank you

More than one with a clear political motive: ‘with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a community of people’ defined by certain characteristics such as their sex, gender, ethnicity, religious background, etc. One would do in strictly legalistic tend, but more than that is used - typically in the order of thousands, if not tens of thousands - because genocide is notoriously difficult to prove on account that those who commit it know the gravity of their crimes and go to great lengths to obscure from the world’s gaze what it is they’re doing.

First time on your channel, really good content, thank you. Have Subscribed. You are the first Brit I've heard covering this case, I'm also British. I appreciate your coverage of this complex case. Just a very little comment, the description 'prostitute" isn't used to describe these women any more, referring to them as 'sex workers' is the updated term, as prostitute has many more negative connotations to decribe this kind of work. But overall excellent coverage, thank you! Let's pray this case develops further and justice is finally served for these deserving victims. 🙏 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Both must have had a place to " operate " in safety for processing . They like to leave multiple drops rather than dropping all bits in one spot , it's more fun for extra chuckles . Amityville / tiger escape folklore . Gloating messages , a repetitive m o they're enjoying . The process is not uncontrollable rage it's controlled glee , a treat , a way of life .
