Try Project Zomboid if you're on steam. Phenomenal indie survival game and only $20. Definitely don't judge it by the graphics, it's an artistic choice that you come to appreciate (basically Sims 1 graphics) but if you like the gameplay loop of: try to survive, make a stupid decision and learn more about the deep mechanics of the game as a result, it's a great one.

10:40 I believe it was Raphael Van Lierop himself (founder of Hinterland) who described the art style as a "watercolour that's trying to kill you."

Having pumped 400 hours into this game in just over a year I see the £17 for the DLC as more of a thank you to Hinterland than a valuation of the DLC. I still haven't even started the story mode.

After more than 1100 hours in this game I still feel the same passion that you displayed so perferctly in this review, great video!

fantastic video. only been playing this game for a little over 10h but I'm already fully immersed and want to experience all it has to offer.

I love The long dark, never heard any complaints about the art style before, even if you don’t find the art style glorious you got to admit it’s better than when “realistic” looking games getting to look bad in a few years. Art style can be timeless, feiend realism dosnt tend to be. You can’t really tell this game is about 8 years old can ya. I do recomend just getting the base game, or even the survival edition if you have no interest in the story aspect. Wait on the DLC if you aren’t hooked on the game already XD

The best way I've heard this game's art style get described was "Firewatch, but cold." Stylized enough to be realistic yet visually interesting and yet remains absolutely breathtaking and surprisingly immersive

I don't see how it's like Firewatch. Natural landscapes is about it. FW is a narrative based with minimal gameplay while TLD is a survival loop. So it's more like an endless mode for Kona.

Been playing this since 2014 or 2015. Playing with breaks, like 6 months or almost a year, but I don't have any other game that I've been coming back to for so many years. Serene violence, minimalist horror, a harsh sense of accomplishment; those things sound implausible, but they're very much in TLD.

I got this game a few weeks ago, I absolutely adore the graphics, atmosphere and music but I’ve not quite found that *draw* just yet. It’s been a while since I played it but I reckon it’s something you appreciate more the more you play

Can't see I've noticed any loading screen bugs. For me it's loading faster than ever. They also mentioned a change to loading assets in the change log Where TLD really excels is the use of color. I hope they improve some things like texture resolution/detail and draw distance, but all those modern, fancy games can't compete when it comes to sunsets, sunrises, fog and just having the environment feel actually cold.

Good video, I have 2300h in tld, but mixed feelings about the DLC. I was hoping that they would give everything, but the remaining regions will take time, and you still have to wait for many things, theoretically it is best to buy the DLC after a year when everything comes out without errors, but I'm not a patient person. And mods greatly improve the game, the developers should support them and even add a lot of solutions to the vanilla game!

Wow, this is such an awesome video! I had no clue about this game and was looking for a few pieces of information for a first overview. It's such an awesome narrative, the scenes combined, an absolutely brilliant voice for this type of video, calmness, and jet pushing forward without losing the track. This is really a great job! Love it!

It’s my favorite survival game by far and it might actually be my favorite game of all time. At least in the top five… Big plus being the community being so great. Sadly that being a rarity in most gaming communities.

Which games do you like other than The Long Dark if I may ask?

The only criticism I've had towards this game was the fact custom games don't make progress towards feats. I really like to play with stalker level animals and cold/weather challenges, but I enjoy the higher and better loot found of the lower difficulties. I think the gunplay is actually pretty good, and I think every shot should count. When I hunt it forces to stop and stalk whatever I'm going after and has also caused me to learn the bow instead of trying to always and only use the gun. I've also never seen or heard of the loading bug till today, which is pretty interesting, is it completely random or does it happen in your bases where you store stuff? I have heard of issues when large amounts of stuff gets stored on the ground and I know a lot of players prefer that over sticking it in containers.

Which mods make the game better? All the ones I’ve seen are either stupid and immersion breaking or just plain game breaking.

If you like survival, bleak hopelessness and guaranteed failure then yes, it’s one of the best games ever.

Great video, this is my favourite survival game as well.

Best survival game ever. Takes long time to achieve relative safety, but yet it's intriguing, calming and I recommend playing with blizzard buzzing outside, yet you're under duvet, lights dimmed and hot tea is waiting for you 🙂

I have hundreds of hours played in TLD Survival mode, mostly interloper. It is an incredible game and experience, the first days on interloper are fantastic! The rush to find matches, coal and metal and to find a forge, while avoiding the wolves and bears is awesome XD But i think the development is taking too long. I think it's time the game gets a graphic overhaul, and there are some basic survival stuff that should have been added many years ago but weren't. From what i saw online, there was talk about upgrading stuff through crafting and the cougar and advanced cooking etc dating back to 6 years ago! I think the development moves at a snails pace, which is a shame. And we STILL can't customize or even clean our house or shelter! It makes no sense. There were a ton of mods that fixed some of these issues, but mods don't work anymore because every update breaks the mods XD Anyway, great game, but still has some issues.

@@markov622 it could be even better though, more detailed textures but still with the same art style. Change isn't always bad :) Could also be a toggle in the graphics settings, that way people could continue to use the old textures if they wanted. But I doubt it's going to happen anyway.

They have just added advanced cooking recipes; many of the new recipes give bonus buffs like a boost to fatigue level or increased backpack carry weight. You can also hunt birds now using a new craftable low damage arrow! 😀

Great review! The Long Dark is hands down my favourite game, so much so that I bought the Switch version as well to play on the go. You know you have a special game when you start dreaming about it, and there's still places I have to visit in game after three hundred and fifty hours of playing - I'll get to you one day, Ash Canyon, I promise. The only thing I'd add to your review is that the difficulty modes are really well thought out. If you want a hardcore freezing-to-death challenge with barely any loot go Interloper. For savage wildlife go Stalker. For a balanced adventure Voyageur and, if you're using the beauty and immersive isolation of The Long Dark as a handy tool for beating anxiety or just want to explore a Canadian wilderness, you can go for Pilgrim where the wildlife isn't out to get you. Or you can set up a custom difficulty cherry-picking the aspects you like of all four of them. I bought the DLC as I wanted to reward Hinterland for the amount of joy I've gotten from this game, but also because I'm eagerly awaiting the safe-house customisation feature on the DLC roadmap. While other games have you build giant towers or the head of Steve Guttenberg out of logs, I think with this one you'll mainly be sweeping up, adding a few guttering candles, and doing embroidery on the cushions during the long winter nights when a blizzard is outside. Oh, and burying that body out back. But it'll feel like HOME, damnitt. And that's what counts.

I love this game and have many hours logged on PC and PS. A couple of things to add to your great review. Sorry if you covered these already. 😃 Even without fiddling in the options, the basic 'difficulty' settings allow you to enjoy a very different experience depending on your mood. The 'missions' allow another change of pace. The story is enjoyable for me. But it's best to think of it as a bonus free add-on for a survival game. That way you won't be annoyed that it's still not finished... 🙄 Despite death always being a possibility if you let your guard down, it can get a bit easy in the later game. Conversely, the survival game can be frustratingly random with survival chances massively affected by how well you know the map location you start in, or how quickly you stumble across shelter. Be prepared for a lot of very short attempts. Some things can be overly fiddley to pick up. 😃 And there are still some tiny niggles like houses being too dark during the day and cars that you can't move about in. But there is so much that is good, and so much to do, see and explore, that you probably won't care about the niggles. And there 'were' mods but I haven't tried them. - see other comments about mods being disabled by later updates.

"Despite death always being a possibility..." I think you misspelled surety with possibility. Death is how you learn the game. With the new update, I'm relearning the new wildlife spawns( which will be probably be respawned again when the new critters drop); I'm redoing the "Archivist" run, I'm passing through the Milton Basin, and color me surprised when I ran into a moose I'd never seen there before. Stomped, broken ribs, you know the drill...gotta take it easy. Get into the Muskeg, expect to see wolves by the radio tower during the aurora...nada. The game is definitely keeping me on my toes again. Oh...and the fire-lighting chance seems to have been tweaked...I've never failed four times in a row at a fire barrel.

Mods don't work anymore since the release of the DLC. I had tons of mods, to fix most of the game shortcomings. Like houses being super dark when it's very light outside, being able to clean the interior by removing clutter and stuff, consuming 5 cat tails at once instead of 1 at a time etc

If I hadn't already been playing this game since it's early sandbox release, I sure as heck would be buying it today after watching this video!

I haven't done the story at all and jumped straight into Survival mode on Voyager. I survived something like 88 days on my first go and had full deer skin clothes. I almost had my last bear hide cured to make a bear skin coat. I ended up dying by getting electrocuted at the dam during the aurora borealis. I was so mad and haven't played much since 🤣

It’s worth coming back and trying stalker. And then when you survive over 50 days with learning and getting comfortable on how to get the bow and arrows, you have to try interloper. That’s where the game is brilliant imo

I haven't played this game but I just downloaded it and after watching this video I have to say that anyone that's played this game and has any VR headset pretty much, has to play into the radius it's one of my favorite games of all time and looks really similar to this just in VR and all I can say is you should play it to

There's a KZreadr, whose Interloper gameplay videos I watched, who described said difficulty the best way possible: "It is for masochists, that enjoys their frigging nuts smashed in a doorframe over and over and over again with the door opening and closing repeatedly." I'd say that's pretty accurate, right?

I have a love hate relationship with this game. I bought it back when it was a kickstarter game and have played off and on over the years but there are some aspects that could be improved. The graphic styling is fine, I get what they were doing there but the animations are severely dated and needs overhauling. At least make the wildlife move more fluidly. Also there’s a lot more that can be done that are minor like more complex recipes, maybe include another bow like a compound bow since there are several gun type weapons already in use I couldn’t see how a compound bow with a sight like a 3-pin sight could hurt the game’s lore. Include more clothes like maybe a hunting jumpsuit that emphasizes camouflage to allow you to either avoid and conceal from predators or to get closer to prey. Maybe change the map cartography to represent what’s all in the characters view when drawing out the map. Change the spray paint color, allow for the arrow sign to be seen on the map. Also why is it that when you get attacked by predators you get sprains and other injuries that prevent you from either running or using a weapon but the predators aren’t affected? Wouldn’t it be nice if when you shoot a bear it limps or if you get a lung shot it effects their ability to chase you? How about a cleaver which would be a compromise between the axe and the hunting knife? I’m sure alot of players have thought about some of these things. If nothing else please update the animations, I think this is the biggest thing going against this game this many years into it. Oh and please for the love of all things immersive, since you live in a first person view why can’t the hands and forearms represent what’s being worn? If I’m wearing a fisherman’s sweater and wool mitts why are the hands gloveless with red forearms?

This game holds a dear spot in my heart

I came late to this game, only got it Christmas 2021. Together with Pentiment it is easily my game of the year 2022. Great game.

Any other survival game recommendations that have a story? I don't want to just survive

I love this game. I rarely say that about any game there have been 3 others Half Life, Skyrim, and Secret World. TLD and Secret World had some of the best story telling that I have experienced and really I find the smaller independent game shops make better stuff then the crap being put out now by the big boys. TLD has the best story, graphics style, music and immersion. I can play it for hours on stalker and I find it so relaxing.

Even though it is May, watching this made me get up and close the window. I've been keeping an eye on this game for years. Never bought it because every time I hear that the story is not finished and there is more to come.

Hours and Hours go by................Permadeath after 100's of hours hurts.......but it somehow pulls me back. Incredible work from Hinterland. Great review also....spot on.

underrated? lmao. People always abuse these words. Technically it's an overrated game.

Games pretty cool, great to just chill out with.

after 500 hours and many more (because i played pirate for the first years) this game was the ONLY game i bought at FULL PRICE. it worths it, and many more. few games have a cold atmosphere that immerses you as The Long Dark. Here, you survive, but not against zombies, vampires, monsters, you are not the savior of the world or the most powerful villain. you are a common person trying to survive what Human Species did for over centuries: cold, hunger and wild animals. your existence is always in a thread. the difference between life and death is marked by things so simple as a cup of water, a meat piece, a sweater or a good rifle aim. a false step and you are dead. no other game in existece is like that.

Man, you must have made this video on the lowest setting possible (or it's been a while since I've been in storymode); I haven't seen THAT much loot in different boxes, locations, backpacks, etc, in YEARS!

To me, what you’re describing is the atmosphere of the game, because there’s still a constant danger in many forms (animals, weather, falling etc). I did my best trying to describe to the viewer, that if you’re craving more action orientated gameplay, then TLD might not be for you! Thanks for watching and getting back to me though man!

yeah it's like single player DayZ. Kind of boring. But hey if you like it a little bit, I would recommend 'Kona', it's like a smaller version of this game with a story you can finish in several hours. Same atmosphere but you can beat it instead of the game having infinite gameplay loops.

@@Respawnedgaming Thank you for your video, I like the game! I just think it's quite repetitive. Go outside get cold, go inside get warm, go outside fight wolf, go inside recover health and clothing. Rinse and repeat. I like the peacefulness of the game to an extent, but sometimes just walking in a direction sucks. The map kinda sucks too!

I'm in the middle of a stalker run for the launch of far territory, after this ends I'm not playing until the end of far territory. The things they are adding are gonna be huge like the travois and base customization. The camera and dark room. Fire hardened arrows and mountain lions . I would say if you are thinking of getting into the game WAIT. Don't burn yourself out before the really neat stuff is added.

Yo honestly I’m happy consoles drop will be later on in 2023 it keeps me from spoiling everything formyself I still haven’t watched any gameplay besides trailers when I first got this game I blind played it and it was fucking great the art the feeling that you can really die at any moment due to starving dehydration no sleep or to cold it was cool best part was discovering the coolest areas without even having knowledge of where I was going and the fact that the new dlc actually has a lot of story secrets and sht or at least that’s what’s being said by devs it seems so much more cooler to blind play it and just take it all in because they really are outdoing themselves for this game and the fact I got it so cheap during the 3rd episode and the content just doesn’t get dull it always feels different every run you never know what you’ll find or not find I love it I wish the loot spawning was more random because I hate hearing yea there’s matches that spawn here here and here when just makes ppl want to look at loot tables so they know where to find things it’s kinda annoying I’d like it to be more random and more deadly also if they could fix consoles problems it would be perfect I wish they could have added the option to play with mouse and keyboard because the controller movement is a lil stiff so aiming is kinda sht sumtimes but other than that they outdid themselves

i love survival games but i get so bored playing them by myself. i hope they come out with multiplayer

I mean I'll lay it out like this , I play ark , I played cod , not much of a Fortnite guy , I play racing games , definitely play mx vs ATV alot , I've played green hell , ark is one of the top tier survival games imo in its own kind of way. But , this game is brutal, could it use shit loads more , yes , they all could , but like I said the brutality of survival in this game is one of it's kind , and it is something you have to learn . I walked away from it due to dropping the spear I needed for the story so I should restart that episode . But bro this game , it's worth a buy , it's not over rated it's graphics are one of a kind , good . I haven't played it in a year , I'm about to play it now and give it another go . This game is a game like , use the items you need and drop the rest , don't carry around useless shit , don't get stuck in the cold and freeze to death . And , just give it a try if you want a survival game that is definitely brutal. They could have more of an open world rather than linear , big linear open maps that you walk to and from . I have not played the dlc yet but will be soon . Please z before anyone shits on this game for no reason, play it , it may be absolutely boring at times , like if you need to find a certain item .but other than that , dude when you turn around and a coyote us just staring at you you're like fuuuuuuck bro. The only game that has derailed me from TLD for more than 30 hours is RDR2. And now I’m back for the DLC, baby!

Nope….they took Sandbox and Story mode and sold separately, it was free before. After 1000 day in all save combined and Faithful Cartographer was done i start to feel regretted.
