The LMP2 Class will be REMOVED from WEC

Спорт

The World Endurance Championship has REMOVED the LMP2 class from the 2024 season onward. Why did this happen? And what is the future of LMP2 racing in the WEC, will the class ever return?
These questions and so much more will be answered in this video, as I break down the collapse of the WEC LMP2 Class.

LMP2 did not collapse. It's simply too cheap, too fast, too light. It doesn't fit in WEC where big brands are coming back with their Hypercars. These teams would easily be replaced by many others, see what this ELMS season will look like with unlocked LMP2 cars.

If each track could host 50 cars, I still see possibility to retain LMP2 in WEC. 12 spots for LMP2 would still make interesting racing where Hypercar drivers need to show skill in fast overtaking of LMP2 cars not to waste time on track behind them. 2 classes for 2024 will certainly make live easier for Hypercars because of difference in speed between GT3 and Hypercars. IMHO 3 classes was and is the best option for multi-class racing. If the LMP2 would remain part of WEC I still think one could fill those 9 leaving spots with teams from ELMS and ALMS. (2nd Europol car, Cool Racing etc)

For me, this always was a matter of grid space rather than lack of entries. Guarenteed there are lots of ELMS/IMSA teams waiting to get a crack at WEC (assuming they have the budget of course). United autosport and Inter europol i think would have stayed if they kept the class for the full season, with the rest being filled up by ELMS/IMSA teams. Plenty of takers i'd imagine. If Hypercar/GTP somehow descends in a financial crisis (wich i don't see happening... Yet), i see LMP2 being reactivated to "save" the series. So no, this really isn't a downfall at all. Just less exposure.

I read something similar a while back, that LMP2 was not being axed, but carefully being revised for 2026. lmp2 never was supposed to be a spec series but certainly became that way with the Oreca chassis dominating everything, hence making it pointless for any of the other chassis providers including the 3 you mentioned to continue to sell anything, because obviously everyone would want to buy the META. I mean heck even LMP3 has like 2 two chassis to chose from.

In the one hand, it's sad that those smaller, often private teams get kicked out of the WEC, on the other, the Hypercar Class has so many spots already taken up that I'm not really surprised, especially when the upcoming GT3 gets stronger as well. To play devil's advocate here, it streamlines the WEC lineup and makes it easier for new fans with only two categories (where we also have to differentiate between LMH, LMDh, with/without hybrid) instead of the four we got used to; and it makes ELMS stronger with LMP2 only there.

It's a shame to lose the secondary class from WEC but I prefer accepting willing manufacturers to the top class, which compete for overall victory, to maintaining LMP2 in the series. If there's interest for hypercar then let them come. We will have nine makes next year. Four LMH in Toyota, Peugeot, Ferrari and Isotta Fraschini, and five LMDh in Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, Lamborghini and Alpine. The sport of top level endurance prototype racing has only once featured this many different manufacturers at the top level - and when it did, it was considered the Golden Era. And it had no secondary class - something the modern WEC does feature, again flush with 9 manufacturers. WEC is in a fantastic position and I can't wait for the 1812km of Qatar next march. Next season is going to be exciting.

And I also wonder if LMP 2 will even exist after 2025. If demand for the category is limited to the European LeMans series and other subcategories, will it make financial sense for Dallara or whoever to produce all new cars for the new specifications?

Got cancelled because their parent company nearly collapsed. They had a plan to do something like Audi did in 2012 with the R18/E-Tron. 2 908’s would have been alongside the 2 908 Hybri4. However, Peugeot lost something like $450m in that year and had to drop the program to save the Company. Toyota then stepped in a year early, and took on most of the Peugeot team, management, and drivers to prevent too many job losses.

In this context, Peugeot prefers to concentrate its 2012 resources on its commercial performance and, in particular, ensuring the successful launches of the 208, 3008 HYbrid4, 508 RXH, 508 HYbrid4 and 4008 which will take forward the Brand's strategy of moving upmarket and extending its global presence.” I have a strong suspicion too that the company decided it was not worth it to continue spending money trying to beat Audi.
