It's an awesome movie !!! I was born in "43, during the war...I watched a lots of war movies, and realising the infinite misery, cruelty of the war, that has to withstand the population and the solders, defending the homeland so bravely.....The youth of the 21- century can't understand to be patriotic, hero for your country....Thank you.

One of the best war movies I have ever seen. The incorporation of the humanity of the average citizen with the fortitude of the soldiers struggles to defend their homeland, despite the odds of just to simply survive in their situation is remarkable. Totally a classic film.

One of the best films and stories I have ever seen. On par, if not superior to "All Quiet on the Western Front', or the American story "The Red Badge of Courage'. Of technical merit, is the ingenuity to produce the film in black and white, delivering a stunning replication of historical film footage and rivetting dialogue.

Absolutely a masterpiece…..it captures a time king forgotten

An excellent film ably performed by outstanding actors. The photography was brilliant & English subtitles very helpful.

The novel “LIVING AND THE DEAD” by Simonov from which is the original source of the movie, is even a better read. A brutally honest yet engaging view of the uncertain times that was 1941. A brilliant effort to make it into a movie and subtitle it as well by Mosfilm...

That fixation with the "party card" is a scary reminder of the awful power of bureaucracies and the absurdity of totalitarianism, where a simple, dirty piece of paper could often have more importance than deeds or human life. Reminds me of the movie Brazil. We are not safe anywhere from these traps, now they are called "digital identity", or even worse, AI.

This is an attribute of commitment. How can you encourage other people to go fight and sacrifice their lives when you are trying to save your own life at any cost? At the cost of shame? Do you remember with what contempt he himself looked at the general, who took off his general's uniform and dressed up in the overcoat of a common soldier? He himself got into a similar situation with a party card.

Outstanding! (In the last moments of the film, there is a series of tones. Does anyone know the tune? Radio Moscow used to broadcast those notes in the moments leading up to a broadcast. I remember hearing that on my shortwave radio when I was a boy.)

Beautiful camera but scenario good for sleeping. I cannot believe others say 'best movie'. It is a waste of time. 3/4 useless talk. Characters come and go. Persons don't show human contact. Storyline broken 50 pieces without glue. I'm not going to judge by the last 5 minutes. A soap opera has more content.
