About Author: Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 - March 26, 1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. In 1932, at the age of forty-four, Chandler became a detective fiction writer after losing his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. His first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in 1933 in Black Mask, a popular pulp magazine. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. In addition to his short stories, Chandler published seven novels during his lifetime (an eighth, in progress at the time of his death, was completed by Robert B. Parker). All but Playback have been made into motion pictures, some more than once. In the year before his death, he was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America
About the book: The Little Sister is a 1949 novel by Raymond Chandler, his fifth featuring the private investigator Philip Marlowe. The story is set in Los Angeles in the late 1940s and follows Marlowe's investigation of a missing persons case and blackmail scheme centered around a Hollywood starlet. With several scenes involving the film industry, the novel was partly inspired by Chandler's experience working as a screenwriter in Hollywood and his low opinion of the industry and most of the people in it. The book was first published in the UK in June 1949 and was released in the United States three months later.
In "The Little Sister," Raymond Chandler's iconic detective, Philip Marlowe, finds himself entangled in a web of mystery, corruption, and Hollywood glamour. Set in the gritty underbelly of 1940s Los Angeles, Marlowe is hired by a young woman from Manhattan to locate her estranged sister, Orfamay Quest. As Marlowe delves deeper into the case, he discovers that Orfamay has disappeared without a trace, leading him down a treacherous path of deception and danger.
This novel is a classic example of Chandler's hard-boiled detective fiction, where Marlowe navigates through a labyrinthine plot involving blackmail, murder, and the dark secrets of Tinseltown. Along the way, he encounters a cast of memorable characters, each with their own hidden agendas. As Marlowe peels back the layers of deception, he must confront his own moral code and the corrupt world he inhabits.

Yes they are!
Love Marlow! Chandler was a master storyteller in this genre.
I'm obsessed with Raymond Chandler. His way with words made me smile with happiness.

Maybe you are familiar with Ross Macdonald? His style is much like that of Chandler. I like Chandler a bit more, but Macdonald is reasonably close in quality, and he wrote more books.
Thanks so much. these radio plays are great. The actor playing Marlowe has the character down to a T. the direction is perfect, too. the show really feels like the ‘30’s and ‘40’s. just one thing, with all the times he gets hit on the head, i’m amazed it stills works 😂🌴☀️
This is one hell of a story. The best so far, I think.
Toby Stephens does an amazing Marlowe! Would really enjoy seeing it on a screen!!
Thank you for putting this together from the UK 🇬🇧

I've never read any Marlow stories, just seen the movies. Some good, some less good.. This is better than most movies. Theater of the mind is always better than MGM or Warner Bros. Voices good. Acting believable. Sound effects good. Music good too. I'm surprised about the high level of production values. Thanks for the experience. I'll subscribe.

Like these radio stories better than watching the movie I can take it with me no matter where I go.
Listening again and it's still fantastic.
The story is very good, but the production even better. It has a great aura, particularly appropriate music, and is complicated enough to warrant another listen. One of the best.

Thanks for listening
Nice
My favorite novelist. Listen to the books if you can find then, sometimes you can on youtube. Most of his 6 major Marlow novels are pretty complex, except for Lady in the Lake I would say. But still I like Lady in the Lake as much as any of them. The abridged version fails though, because it minimized the role of the constable. He is one of the major shining points of that novel.
I have now listened to the high window twice in a few days. It is so clever. Ive listened to hundreds of stories over the past years. It's my favourite short story. ❤ thank you 😊

great story well acted
💖very entertaining
one of the better stories - tho all i've heard were good.
Yes. Dialogue / atmosphere and characters all excellent. Unfortunately the plot is ludicrously over complicated and the final scene is even longer than the average Poirot unmasking the murderer moment. Chandler was very critical of the English Country House style mystery but his own plots were just as implausible . !

I love private eye stories
Who is doing the marlow voice?
Chandler really pegged that self centered, virtue signaling hypocrite type 100%. Such a common character today.

Listened to the entire radio broadcast of Phillip Marlowe from the late 40s early 50s and have read the books. For some reason he seems more like an uncaring asshole in these broadcasts. Gerald Mohr had the personality perfect for Marlowe.

Not uncaring - almost godlike cynical-seen too much of the worst!

A compression of the text. Chandler's Marlowe is wise, cheeky, lonely and built to be. Educated, fond of poetry and chess. A shop-worn Galahad. Too much for a radio play.
The little sister has such a sexy voice

In that old age, when most people were too mediocre to really change their lives, people ran out into the night, cravenly made it to the corner-store, diner, pub, or similar, and then babbled wild tales about mobsters, muggers & great adventures. Quality-wise, this series' did better than all the #OTR efforts! 🤗
What a crap version chandler will be turning in his grave
