The Little Mermaid - Ursula's Death Evolution (1987 - 2023)

another evolution video, this time of the scene where ursula dies! as you can tell, this scene evolved quite a bit to get to where it is now :)

Its so cool to see how much this ending was altered before the final release. I like how the adaptations of the original film tweak it as well.

A difference in the 2023 release, the roles are reversed as Ariel somehow sacrificed spiritual needs to kill Ursula.
First storyboard is best version because everyone saved the day. Ariel was the one who knocked the trident out of Ursula's hands, Sebastian brought it to Eric, Eric tossed it.

i like that the early versions make it clear the trident backfiring is what finishes her off and disintegrates her, the 1989 versions do it more subtly

That mostly meant Ariel was almost certainly doomed to be without the human legs or Eric despite having come all this way.
0:46 That’s how she was killed in Kingdom Hearts 2 lol. If they had used that ending, it would’ve been great if Eric yelled “Here’s your triton, your Majesty!” before flinging it at her 😁
Wow the 2nd workprint is gruesome. I mean the way Ursula's death is animated.
The reason why the first two endings were changed was because Jeffrey Katzenberg had went to see Die Hard and after watching the film he returned to the studio and saw the original endings and told the producers that the ending wasn’t big enough and plus Die Hard was a huge hit at the time and after watching the film he quoted more Die Hard

I don’t think they wanted it to look too graphic, it’s still a kids movie. If a more graphic scene of her dying is what you were hoping for.
It is rather confounding how Ursula is shown with an endoskeleton at 05:16 despite her being based on a marine invertebrate, particularly the group of molluscs called cephalopods, which have a gladius.
I like both versions. But i wish they changed Ursula's death in the live action because with Ariel Killing her i would like to see a new death. Edit: The fact so many people got upset that Ariel killed Ursula even though in the Broadway version she defeated Ursula and yet NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THAT. Just shows how hypocritical they are 😂

No it wasn't. The ending was changed for not "being like die hard". In the original versions, Ariel did contribute to the fight more, but when Ursula grew giant someone had to distract her. Neither version fixes this issue because there's no way to fight giant Ursula without someone being helpless.

Well, there's one thing to note about Ursula's demise. Evil always loses.
Ok, so hopefully this isn't a stupid question but in all concepts before the 1989 and 2023 film and excluding the broadway version, was Ursula always a giant or was there some kind of magic that kept her in her regular form before she died?
@justyourvoice

in the earlier storyboards it seems she may have gotten a little bigger, but mostly stayed the same size. i dont think they decided to make her huge until the 3rd workprint in the video
The original version is awesome. It's more violent and Ariel actually tries to fight back. I do however love the one we ended up getting with the ship impaling kaiju Ursula. The live action remake is so-so, I am not a fan of Ariel killing Ursula and it makes no sense for her to be able to steer a vessel. It takes years of experience which she couldn't learn in the short time frame of being a human.

I’m still kinda confused on what happened in the Broadway version. What shell was that, was it the one around her necklace or something?
@dgaller06
15 күн бұрын
In the Broadway version, the shell is given much more significance. Instead of just being an object used to hold Ariel's voice, it is the source of Usula's magic, and her life force is also tied to it. So, when Ariel destroys the shell, it kills Ursula. In some versions of the play, Ursula reveals that she did rule over all the oceans for a time. She killed her other siblings, except for Triton, and inherited both the trident and shell from her father Poseidon. However, when Triton comes of age, he takes the trident and rule of the oceans away from her, banishing her from the kingdom, and leaving her only with the shell.

I think the 2023 version was cool, only complaints is one, the true love should’ve been the last line. Two I wish the lighting happened, it felt kinda anticlimactic without the lighting and sparks everywhere. It felt like a giant explosion.

Go, Ariel, go!
I never liked that Ariel was helpless in the original, but I don't like that Eric is helpless in the new movie. I never liked that Ursula turned giant because there's no way for two ordinary people to fight that without someone acting as a distraction. The cool thing about the storyboard fights is that everyone is throwing hands with Ursula equally. No one person contributes to beating her.

i loved how in the live action, ariel was the hero of her own story. on the 1989 film, she doesn't do anything to have her voice back, and erick killed ursula at the end. on the live action, SHE took the necklace from vanessa herself, and she killed ursula. best live action remake
RO el ca e de la empresa y Los gentiles ir el ca
My only problem with the remake is the climax and ending. It was so overly feminist that it is ridiculous. I mean seriously? A mermaid steering a ship without a single lesson? Seriously. Here’s how I would have written the climax and ending. Ariel never actually finds out that Vanessa is really Ursula and she goes to the celebration to say goodbye to Eric. As Eric sees her leave, he realizes that even though she’s not the “one” she’s his true love. So he politely rejects Vanessa and confesses that he loves Ariel. Vanessa would try to stop him from trying to kiss her but Scuttle and Max would fight her. The sun still sets before they kiss and Ariel becomes a mermaid again and is taken prisoner by Ursula. The same swap is made with Triton, Eric comes to save Ariel, Flotsam and Jetsam get killed, and like in the original, Ursula tries to blast Ariel with the trident and Eric steers the ship into her. However instead of killing her, the ship only hurts and shocks Ursula into dropping the trident which Ariel uses to deliever the final blow. All that remains of the sea witch is her necklace which breaks and frees Ariel’s voice. She and her father reconcile and later he turns her human permanently (while giving her that sparkly dress) and she rises from the water singing a reprise of “Part of your World.” Thus making Eric see that she was the “one” after all.
