Mufasa in this clip is Samuel E. Wright, the original Mufasa for The Lion King show. He was nominated for a Best Male Actor Tony Award in 1998 for this role. Off Broadway he is probably best known for being the voice of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid.

Isn't the original Mufasa voice done by James Earl Jones? I stand to be corrected but I guess Samuel E. Wright voices Sebastian the crab in The Little Mermaid.
That’s so said. Samuel E Wright passed away today. Both Lion King stars are resting in heaven. 💛🧡💛💛
Every time I watch this video and hear Jason Raize's voice, I feel completely uplifted. His voice was magnificent.

Even in 2018, I still get chills when Jason Raize belts it out!
The one who filmed this and then kept it all those years is a true hero. This is seriously what I live on. Wish I could've seen the original cast, especially Jason. I never got to meet him, but I truly honor his work and he inspires me probably every day of my life.

Jason Raize - what a damn great voice!!! Gone too early!!!
Mr. Wright passed away in the last year; what a loss. His Mufasa was so perfect; it illuminated his beautiful heart, showcased his enormous talent and a voice that sends chills down one's spine in the most beautiful of ways. Sure, I remember Sebastian, but it's his Mufasa that still touches my soul.
There was color in his voice ! & He wont be forgotten . i still admire him Jason Raize !
Wow . i really got so touched by the way Jason really captures the essence of his character very very well. Like everyone else i wish he never took suicide in the first place. he is special in many good ways. may his soul finaly rest in peace

Samuel E. Wright has a hypnotizing and calming voice ...I Love it :)
Jason Raize leaves me speechless everytime I watch this video. It's incredible, it's absolutely amazing how he projects his voice, it's amazing indeed. R.I.P. Jason, we miss you!

We just lost a legend in Disney Rest In Peace Sam.
i love Samuel Wright(aka Sebastian from Little Mermaid)and all the women who play Rafiki can sing RIP Jason you were a great talent that died to young. God bless his family and thx to you for posting this vid.
DAAAMN......that voice tho'!!!
Rest in Peace Samuel E Wright You are always greatly missed and appreciated for everything you did. Your portrayal of King Mufasa was phenomenal. God bless you and Jason Raize
Samuel Wright's craft uplifted the hearts of both the young and old. His role in the little mermaid as sebastion remains one of my favorite voice acting performances of any performer (only second to Robin Williams). As a child I would watch the little mermaid in the same way my daughters watch frozen, completely in rapture by it and with entirely too much frequency. This is my favorite of Sam Wright's performances. May his performances and art live on for generations. Rest in Peace Samuel Wright.
I feel like Nick Afoa who I've seen play Simba in the West End takes a lot of inspiration from Jason Raize. Both incredible Simbas. So sad Jason is no longer here.

Both versions -- "They Live In You" and "He Lives In You" -- are my favorite songs from anything that's Lion King-related. They're totally spiritual.
RIP Legend 🥺💔
Oh yes, the stage setup for the "He Lives in You" scene just sends chills down your spine, especially when the ghost mask of Mufasa appears, OMG. And the part after Simba decides to return is awesome too, upbeat and uplifting. He Lives in You (reprise) is my favorite scene of the show, even more so than Circle of Life, and many other fans feel the same way. I hope you get to see the show yourself someday!

it's one of my favorite plays. wicked is my most favorite but Lion king has the best set an music. seen it twice on tour.
I saw this show live when I was in high school! Ever since then I can't help but to compare live plays to it, this show inspired me to get into theatre and I hope to someday write, produce and direct something this memorable.
Best cast ever
over a million views & I alone probably saw this over 400,000 times & STILL over 400,000 Chills...very Inspirational! Jason Raize, I'm speaking to you directly...R.I.P. you're now singing with God's Angels... "679"
I could listen to the segment from 3:05 to 3:14 on loop forever. The power with which Jason Raize delivers is incredible. Unfortunately, I watched this on Broadway well after his passing and didn't get to experience his stage presence/talent first hand. It's a shame there was so much turmoil in his life. R.I.P.
jesus christ jason raize had an amazing voice
Glorious.
Gotta tell you, having just discovered this video, Kijani?! How have you hidden this from me for 14 years!? Love it!
Yeah, it shocked me too, that Jason was not nominated at all. He didn't just play Simba. He WAS Simba. No one can play the role like him. Such a great talent and such and incredible voice. He should have been nominated.
I saw the Lion KIng when it very first came to Broadway. There was high expectations as the "buzz" about the show was considerable. The best way I can put it...is that the show and performance of it ignited the audience. I have seen much in my day but the first time (out of 3) that I saw Lion King was almost not to be believed. Jason and Heather performed beyond by capacity to describe. I was so sorry to hear about his passing.
Love it!! The way he stood up and opened his mouth then this powerful voice just came out!! like he wasnt even trying!! love it!!
I've seen this live show 4 times...including my first show with the Original cast back in 2002.and 4 times is still not enough. I most recently took my wife this past December to San Antonio to see it, her first time, and man, it's still Hands down the best of all time. This scene in particular, chills, every time.
Saw this live.... can't express the magic you feel in this scene. The background singing makes it sound like the voices and music is literally swirling and moving across the stage. No idea how they do it, but it is stunning.
Amazing production...just awesome. There's many different versions, but this one I like the best. Vocals, acting...and the whole mood is so convincing. Kudos to the percussionists back there!
Jason WAS JUST AMAZING....r.i.p..... THERES NEVER BEEN A BETTER SIMBA SINCE!
"He lives in you and he lives in me" Ive seen this video several times and have been blown away by the amazing gift jason has to bring people to tears with his amazing voice. Now tears are there for a different reason. They say math is the universal language... i say its music. If you have seen Jason perform, he touches your soul. Like someone said in the other post.. He is singing for the angels!
Jason wished you never left life isn't the same without you 😔 but 😞 I'll enjoy it the way you should've enjoyed it to the fullest ☺
omg!! this is so sad to see Jason Raize! i miss him! the world lost such a talent. i saw this on broadway earlier this year. it was amazingg beyond words.
This is one of my favorite songs from this musical. Absolutely love it!
jason raize
This is one of the reasons I became a percussionist!!
That is the most amazing voice ive heard. soo much energy and meaning into it its unbelievable , one day i hope i'm able to see Lion king seen everyone and its still my favoirite movie after 10yeaars
I think the awesomeness of the performance literally stunned the audience for a moment at the very end.
The woman is Tsidii Le Loka, the original Rafiki for The Lion King on Broadway. She was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a musical at the 1998 Tony Awards for this role and she has her own web site too - just Google her name to find it. She really was something special, as Jason Raize and all the original cast members were.
Now it seems Samuel E. Wright now joins Jason Raize as having passed away recently. He'll always be Sebastian to me before Kevin Michael Richardson took over the role following his retirement years back.
well said. i just came upon this news four years later. what a loss.
I love how at 3:39 there's this two second pause where everyone's just blown away and then, the audience erupts into applause. So great.
This was fantastic. I cant imagine how they mustve felt after a performance, knowing they just took place in one of the best shows on broadway :) I hope I get to see this in person.
oh my gooood i´m from germany and i looove the original musical the LIon King... their voices are so.... great... i´m going to cry... I just love it!!
It has to be 1998. The show won the Tony for Best Musical that year and Rosie mentions to watch the Tonys because of the show's nominations.
I think at least 100 are from myself, i can watch this over and over and get the same shivers with every note. ~In your reflection, they live in you.
Whenever Jason was singing, he put a little piece of his soul int his voice....it couldn't last for long.... :(
omg....when simba sang i got shivers wow......they all have such beautiful voices
One of the best musical ever! The lion king was my favorite cartoon when i was a little girl but it is still touching my heart.
I've seen it 5 times in London, I went again the otehr day and it's the greatest musical of all time. Nobody can quite match the vocals of Jason Raize, but London still put on a fantastic show. Only ever buy an aisle seat down the bottom, or you'll be disappointed!
Poor guy. He should have known how many people loved his voice, and what light his voice brought so many people...
Jason played the adult Simba. The best Simba ever to hit the stage.... :( He is and will always be missed. If you're listening Jason, YOU ARE LOVED!
god jason gets me everytime i watch this. so sad...such a huge talent.
I don't know, it seems like the OBC of the LION KING has made an lasting impression on the musical 20 years later.. Amazing.
