What an awesome interview! Tom is one of the most sympathetic guys in the whole kite boarding game. I feel in the exact same way when he talks about being a pro in these days. Since the PKRA times were over everything changed and got unbelievably messy. Competition riding was never the same again.

That's exactly how I started- flying a 2 line flexi kite for days. I think training kites are the best way to get a kid hooked on kiting without the need to spend much money on gear or risking any injury. The best part is that kids learn so much fucking kite control that later riding or jumping comes without any effort. Sadly it's a quite forgotten practice as kite schools nowadays use training kites less in favor of horrible group lessons and short lines. In Poland most schools used to teach it in the past but there are so many of them now that there is no space on the beach to fly those small kites and everyone learns steering like a kook with some fucked up 8m bow kite on 10m lines.

Same here. Flew a 2.5m Peter Lynn kite for over a year before getting in the water. Copped backs and fronts on the beach first. Trainer kites need a resurgence.

Most brands trainer kites are so bad they aren't even worth copping though. Need a good one like a Flexifoil or Peter Lynn.

@@le_tranq I got the flexifoil one for my 13th birthday or so and was playing with it all the time with friends when it wasn't quite enough for kiting. We did all the good shit like kiteloop-skipping rope, kite passes and zero knots around the worlds, haha
