250 horsepower from a 3.9 liter is about one horsepower per cubic inch. That is actual pretty good for when it was built.

I wouldn't say "pretty good", but more like it was "ok". Let's compare to similar displacements of that era. Toyota/Lexus original LS400 with a 4.0 liter 1uz was putting out 250 back in 1989 and 300 by 1998 when they added variable value timing. Or.... Even look at the large 6 cylinder engines of the period as well. 3.5 liter Nissan VQ's we're at 260. Honda 3.5 J series 240, etc. So.... I'd say it was just "ok". Not good, not terrible.

@@GoldenCroc agreed most youtubers dont fundamentally understand the mechanics of vehicles theyre reviewing. My comment is more that the younger guys lack perspective of the era simply bc they werent there...comparing output to todays standards is ignorant. If they took a more objective approach it wouldnt be so bad.
I had an LS. I loved it, drove fantastic on the highway and was fun to drive.

I had two of these a 2003 LS V8 Sport, and most recently a 2006 Ultimate Sport with every available option. I finally sold it after 5 years back here in April. Man that car rode and handled like nobody's business. Easily the best American sedan during its time.
I just bought a 2003 V8 Sport Premium with 45K miles. I've always loved these cars. You guys are hard on the LS 😂
There's plenty of warts with Lincoln LS, but Kase is throwing a lot of stones (@2:35) at a 250-280 hp Lincoln for someone who has a 245hp "performance car" Corvette in their glass house.
The local Lincoln dealer used to call me the LS guy. When I was a kid, I wanted one so bad, and soon as I was old enough, I got one. I ended up opening a used car dealer, and I've sold over 200 LSs. Every color of every year. The one I kept is 2002 LSE with manual transmission

I just bought one 3 days ago with almost 200k on it and it runs and rides smooth and is super clean
250 hp out of a 3.9 V8 is not that bad considering that GM sold the 4th gen Caprice with 5.7 V8 putting out 193 hp ...

Yep and it’s really just 3.9 liters of displacement we’re talking about. Even 220hp from the 3.0 V6 was good in the early 2000s.

@@EricFortuneJr. Sure, but Chrysler was getting 250hp out of a SOHC 3.5L V6 at the same time with the Chrysler 300M. More displacement, but less technology. Even the SVT Contour was making 200hp from 2.5L (and is related to the AJ V6). Honestly I'd love the 2002 V6 LSE manual just to try it. They weren't much slower than the V8, and honestly less of a dud than the similar Cadillac Catera also on the market at the time.

@@hduncan2587 Yeah, Cadillac was struggling at that time. The 1st gen CTS and 2nd gen Escalade are what helped save Cadillac. Lincoln was still doing quite good at that time until they started replacing actual names with MK this and MK that. The 300s were always somewhat hot for Chrysler. Chrysler probably could’ve gotten away with just selling the 300 and maybe the prowler and Crossfire imo. The 300 took the CTS lunch money in looks, reliability and overall value.
I loved these when they first came out. Wanted a V8 version so bad
You have to turn off the traction control and it will absolutely roast the tires. I miss mine.

I had a first Gen and a second gen, when it ran good I loved it! It was quick for the time and a Beautiful looking car!
I had a 2001 LS6 with the automatic and I LOVED IT !!! Mine was black with a light grey leather interior. Looked sharp, drove great, and had excellent steering. I really enjoyed it and wished I still had it.
I had a 2001 LS V8 in that exact color combo I bought used for really cheap. It was a fun comfortable car that did handle really well. It actually was very reliable and never left me stranded, just mainly replaced suspension parts here and there. Overall I don't regret the time I spent with it.

Great comment your comment is what most people experienced with this car V8 version .Yes these cars were very nice and is why there popular with the younger crowd now days , the look , performance (v8) and actually good reliability keep this car still today a nice car. This video was ok but they did not specify the fact that it performed bad because they said it had engine issues. It has a check engine light on , they both say the steering wheel was shaking at idle , so obviously it has multiple misfires and was running on most likely 3 or 4 cylinders. So with that they shouldn't have even did a a performance test or at least said why it performed bad. Like all cars if you get a good one and if you don't. As we know all cars have there issues no matter what brand or model you have now , owned and want.

You got lucky I had a 04 it had cooling issues my brother had a 2000 and one of my close homies had a 2000 they had no issues but they got them brand new mines was used

If you had a 2005 mustang GT 5 speed and needed a family car, would this LS be a good trade?
I have a 2006 Lincoln ls and love it. Fast, sporty feel and very confortable. A car that was definitely misunderstood.
Not sure why the young guy keeps saying that most people don’t know or forgot the LS. It was never a “wanted” vehicle but most of us car guys know it very well as well as it’s history.
My mother bought one of these new in 2002 with the V8. I grew up in it. I learned to drive in it and I eventually got it for a graduation gift then crashed it. Typical teenage stuff. But I remember going to the dealer to fix stuff like the coil packs and I think a hydraulic cooling system that had failed however when it was given to me the car had over 150k miles on it. My grandfather wanted it and he’s still driving it with well over 250k miles that I know of.
I got one these for my little brother for his collage car he’s driven it from 159,000 to 247k still going strong he’s put 1800 into the car in that time and still driving it daily even was a delivery driver for a while great car safe reliable great car
I had a 2004 model and I really miss that car. By it being my 3rd Lincoln, I previously had a 1996 Continental and a 2002 Continental and by comparison the LS V8 was what Lincoln intended it to be.
Just bought a 2000 LS V8 with only 10,538 original miles and in excellent condition. It was stored in a garage year round and I don’t think anyone ever sat in the back or passenger seat! I love it!
I have an 02 Ls 3.9 and I love it if you don't take care of maintenance it can be expensive all around tho I love the car

I had an '02 on 20" rims, I didn't know how cool it was I guess! But I did trade my friend for a sick '95 Z71. I was so jealous when he fixed the coil packs on the lincoln because he spun tires everywhere lol

I got a 02 now on 20s automatic with the side shifter trying to figure out how to use it
I wanted one of these so bad when they first came out.. if only a manual transmission version in V8.
I had an 03 with the V8. Was a lot of fun to drive. It had a lot of issues with coil packs though.
I’ve owned 2 of them and put 250 thousand miles on one of them.
The vibration is just a coil pack gone bad. Very easy fix
I bought a 2000 Lincoln LS for $6500 in 2010 when I went to college. We referred to this thing as a “drift pig” all through college. When it worked it was a great car but it always seemed to need something
My 06 V-8 LS averages 27mpg on the Interstate. Its got 165,000 miles on it. I take very good care of it.
Hey actually it was to compete with the 5 series BMW and the E-Class Mercedes Benz. It was the transmission’s that were not reliable and the dreaded water filling soaking up #4 ignition coil. Other than that they were pretty cool cars. The V8 was the better option when it came to power and acceleration.
These cars deserved more investment from Ford. There should have been more generations. 1:23 - this was far bigger than the 3 Series and C Class. It was closer to 5 Series and E Class, just like the Jaguar S-Type. Had Ford given Lincoln a version of the X-Type, that would have been the 3 Series and C Class segment.

Unfortunately while size is a larger part of competition outside the Americas due to taxation of a vehicle, in the Americas it's more a cost comparison. These were closer in cost to the stated cars they were targeting. Unfortunately, it still misses the mark due to the level of reliability and poor build quality.

@@oregongaper Nobody bought the X type in Europe - and this is why they've made 350 thousand of them ? :D and only 106 thousand were exported to US Well the diesel versions were like Mondeo almost (at first X type offered only V6 4x4) -- but the V6 engines not so much liek the Mondeo, unique 2.1 V6 fwd or 4x4 2.5 and 3.0 v6 -- when Mondeo had only fwd drivetrains. It was also best selling Jaguar ever, they still lost money on it :/
1:23 it looks much bigger than a 3 series or a C Class, so i don't think it competed with those. Think 5 series, E class, Volvo S80 and if you want to go Japanese, the Lexus GS.
My friend had one of these and it sounds good handled good but he always had some kinda cooling problems. It was really comfortable too. I tried buy this car from him but he said friends don't let friends buy this Lincoln.i still think it's cool.

You need to replace the entire cooling system at once with all OEM motorcraft parts. Ends up being about $900 in parts. If you do one failed piece at a time, or use autozone/advanced/etc parts store replacements, it will never be fixed. Same applies to the misfire issue. When it starts, do ALL plugs and coils at once with OEM motorcraft coils only. Anything else will leave you stranded again.
The LS ran well when it ran. But it did have a lot of issues. The Thunderbird was basically the same car with a different body. The engine was great. But the suspension was a weak point. And electrical gremlins were common. Repairs were expensive as well.
As the owner of a Wedgewood Blue 2001 Lincoln LS, I can say that it was the size of a 5-series, not a 3-series. It had 95% of the handling of a 5-series at 75% of the price. If Ford wouldn’t have neutered the 3.9L and just used the Jaguar 4.2L, right out of the gate, this would have been an even bang-for-the-buck. Plus, that chassis could handle 400hp, so it should have gotten a supercharged version. The 2003->2006 versions had a 280hp version of the 3.9L, and while better, it still wasn’t a fire breather. The THX sound system in the navigation based cars was awesome, though.

@@SunnynPhilly But only 1,5 milion E39 which was made in same timeframe as the LS - had a Touring (Station Wagon 266k made) About 40 k sales in US of BMW 5 series every year -- same rare car :D
Owned an 04 it was a nightmare to own but when it ran properly it was fun, got it up to 140 a couple of times

I hear that it's always funny how these people that do reviews for a living can't properly compare cars to ones when from they were made.
I remember reading about it back in the day. "Lincoln LS, 2000 Motor Trend car of the year".
I loved this car when I was in high school 🏫
just came in from running forscan on my 03 ls v8. trying to knock out a ton of dtc code, and electrical gremlins. was my first financed car back in 06, and still today i kept and love it, and it still gets me to and from work, but with some faulty quirks. love my ls v8, it was a head of its time imo with heated and cooled seats, thx gps, still quick if you do a few easy mods, and rides like floating on air. I love driving around because you just dont see them anymore, gives the public something to look at and wonder about.
You two bagging on 250 HP but yet you all talk up that corvette you have that has 245 HP 😂😂

I liked how the bump from the V6 220-to 250 (30hp) was nothing to them. Yet the 30 bump from 250-280 (also 30hp) was a big jump.

Car and Driver fast-tracked a long term test on one of these, they put 10,000 miles on it in 10 days. Also, I went to one of the launch events Lincoln put on in a parking lot, got to drive one with a 5-speed around a cone course, as well as competitor cars. I honestly don’t remember a single car that day other than the Lincoln.
FYI, This Lincoln LS would have been comparable to a 5 series BMW not the 3. Additionally this platform was also used on the retro T Bird from 2002 to 2005. At the time, this was a huge leap forward for Lincoln to go to a serious European styled sport sedan. Always admired these cars but never owned one. I do own the platform sister car (T Bird). I agree with your comment about it being associated with the T Bird in a more positive way. I think if you would have found a better preserved car with lower mileage you would have been pleasantly surprised. BTW, reliability on the T Bird has been exceptional with nearly 80K miles on it. Not to mention the head turning looks we get!

I used to sell Ford Lincoln Mercury from 2002-2004 , these are sooo awesome! Loved the wood steering wheel .
I remember falling love with this car when I was a used car tech. I had so much fun driving them when they got traded in. Quite quick
I had a LS, mine had the Euro spec suspension, only about 200 were sold in the states. Had cat back with resonator delete, Flowmaster F40 mufflers. cold air intake, SCT tuner. Threw some Goodyear Supercar tires on it and drove the hell out of it in the canyons.

I loved this car back when Lincoln first started making the LS. My uncle had a green one with a beige vinyl top! Best looking car I’ve ever seen in that class.
My dad had one that became mine. I threw so much money at that car trying to keep it running. It drove great but was a maintenance nightmare. It made it to almost 200k miles before engine gave out.
I have my 2006 Lincoln LS sitting peacefully in my garage until she wants to play😁 all black leather interior, wood grain, aluminum coolant reservoir tank and all kinds of work on it but she runs beautiful ❤️
I have the V6 Jaguar S-Type over here in England. The traction control can be disabled on it and there is a Sport Mode button for the transmission. The V8 was more powerful but possibly not as reliable as the V6. I wouldn't call an S-Type a 'sports car' by any definition, to my mind they were designed more like cruiser. One that's running properly should be incredibly smooth driving - like wafting down the road on a cushion of air.

The kid driving looked like he wanted to make it look as bad as possible anyway. No way he wouldn't have known to turn off T/C and use sport mode. When the passenger mentioned 60% throttle to take off in first was the tip. He's supposedly trying to chirp the tires with under 50-60% throttle. If he was giving it more than that at first they wouldn't have needed the 2nd run.

I looked at buying a good inexpensive car for the rest of my driving life at 66. I sold a 1954 Ford F-100, owned since 1980, to buy a 2006 V6 S-type and the seller of the Jag sold his restored '55 F-100 to buy a brand new Ford pickup. Compared to the old pickup, the S-type is a nightmare for shade tree mechanic work but it is worth it. I've had them all, Lincolns, Mercedes, Bmws, Cadillacs and the S-type is really the first car I've felt like keeping on the road, no matter what. After a six hour drive you hop out of the thing as fresh as when you started. No auto has done that as well in my driving experience. Reliability, buy a Honda and feel good about low maintenance. But life is meant to be lived, not maintained.
Had an 02'. Put a custom cold air intake and exhaust on it, sounded sweet. Loved the car.
These actually drove really well and still look stylish.

Yes they did and do still look good , but can you believe they had one with needing a tune up bad and still did a performance test? and didn't say why it did bad , they said it had a engine light on and was shaking at idle but joked and put down the LS about the performance instead of saying why it performed bad. They were known (LS)to be fast cars when running correctly.
My grandparents bought one when they came out and my papa loved to give er the beans. Fun car.
My sister-in-law insisted on an S-class when she finished her residency (she’s a pediatrician), and claimed it as her dream car. It was the 3.0 model, and it was surprisingly reliable. She drove it for nearly 150,000 miles. As Jaguars go, this had a lot of Ford DNA, making it more reliable than most Jaguars.

Cool! 🤙 My sister in Law is a Pilot at United. She drives a Porsche Macan. For a crossover SUV it’s surprisingly scary fast when my brother drives it (he’s a Pilot at American). As Jaguars go, if I wanted an old Jag I’d get a mid 90’s XJ, if I wanted a Lincoln it would definitely be a TownCar.
I "Did" forget about these! I was looking for a new car in 2000 and drove one. I was impressed. It pushed me back into my seat. I wanted awd so I got a POS Audi A6 2.7T that blew a turbo after four years and 85,000 miles. It was a great car up until then.
talking about the 252horsepower like its slow but we got 20 year olds in 130hp 4cyl hondas thinking they are at the drag strip XD
The car is actually in nice shape 😊

A 3rd Generation LS with the Mclaren tuned performance version as a CTS V fighter would have been fantastic. Instead Lincoln shat out the Fusion based Zephyr to replace the LS.

@@maineiacmanAgreed, the Zephyr was a Cimarron-level joke of a car. The biggest problem with the LS and why Ford discontinued it was that they never made money on it. Truly a shame, because that car had a lot of potential, as you pointed out.

I remember the commercial for this car where there's a lady doing a burnout in the shape of a cup of espresso. These were cool cars at the time.
I've always loved those ls Lincoln great looking car still love them
We had one the first year they came out. Real comfortable, handled great. Was a nightmare when it came to reliability. The drivers seat broke 3 months after buying. They tried fixing but finally had to replace the whole seat. Power windows continually broke. Needless to say we got rid of it before the warranty expired.

Omg I must have replaced every window regulator twice in my 2001 ls the three years I owned it. I still loved that car though. Drove amazing.

I delivered to a doctor back in the day. He had a new LS that he sent off to get a supercharged V8 and a 6 speed manual swap. Can't remember where the engine came from, but it was healthy lol.
It wasn't a Jaguar with Lincoln badges, as these two insist on suggesting. The DEW98 platform was developed after Ford bought Jaguar, and involved engineers from Ford and Jaguar. It was then used under the LS, S-Type, and Thunderbird. The V8 was the one part of the car that actually was a Jaguar design from the get go. The V6, while a Jaguar evolution, was based on the Ford Duratec V6.

Had one of these. Loved it. Only reason I got rid of it was I was in college in Minnesota. It was not very good in the snow so sadly got rid of it. Wish I could have kept it.
I had that exact car. Same color. Good driving car. It had nice features. Traded it for a new Marauder.
The car that could have been so much! I had one back in 2010 and had for a couple months and it blew the head gasket and went downhill from there

Had an 04 LS in that same color. Loved it, but terrible in the snow. Had to trade it for an Explorer because I couldn't get me in the front and car seats in the back.
My first car was a Lincoln LSE with the aero package. The 3.9 V8 felt fast as hell after learning to drive in my moms Prius 😂

I was given a ride in a friends LS and was very impressed overall!
I currently have a 2000 Lincoln ls , 141.000 handles great in the corners. I love it but the ignition coils keep breaking down. But I love it.
Cadillac tried to same thing in the Late 90s with the Cadillac Catera AKA (THE CADDY THAT ZIGGS). Basically it was just a re-badged, and re-skinned Opel Omega B series. I had a 98 Catera. It was fun to drive, but was plagued with motor issues that footed a costly repair bill.

Yes but then came the CTS, which was essentially a better version of the catera. Also the CTS-V came the following year. That's one thing that Cadillacs does right unlike Lincoln, which hasn't made a performance luxury sedan, or vehicles for that matter.
I went from LS to S-Type R and now to its natural next step up to XFR.
I always had a soft spot for one of these cars. I had one up to a 120 felt good.
My 99 Jaguar XJ8 with the 4.0 is no Mustang GT, but it’s a enjoyable large car with that J gate transmission.

My uncle retired from Ford. He bought a new Ford or Lincoln every few years with his employee discount. He owned one of these. I liked it. He also had a brand new 1983 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe when I was a kid.
I hated these cars. I worked Lincoln/Mercury parts in the 2000's and there were more TSBs and recalls on this car than any other platform i can remember. And i worked for several different manufacturers. They were available with a manual transmission too
My dream car forever ❤❤❤❤ miss mine so much my 2000 v8 sport was all His parts was stolen from a friend house was parked AND was sold as junkyard 😢😢😢

I am suprised that GM didnt sue for using the LS V8 name. I do believe that 3.9L V8 is originally a Buick developed V8 that Land Rover and Jaguar used for over 40 years.

I’m surprised Lexus didn’t sue for using the LS name.
The Lincoln LS was built to compete with the BMW 5 series and Mercedes E-Class, not the 3-Series or C-Class. It was a higher-end midsize sedan, not a lower-end. Hence why it offered an optional V8 engine
I always thought Lincoln would have been better served if they had put the 32v 4.6 from the Mark VIII in the LS.

Definitely not. My 2002 LSE wouldn't have lasted as long as it has if they put one of those junk mod motors in em.
I have a 2005 LS V8. I really like it. Sure, there have been issues. Most involve fuel delivery, and the coils. Once I had the fuel injectors serviced, it has been running fantastically. The bottom line is the LS is a long-distance car, not really a city runabout. It's fast, smooth, and comfortable. The one in your video is the 1st generation. Stick with the 2nd generation.

what was the issue with your fuel i try to pump gas in my 2002 lincoln ls and it spits it up
On my 2nd, fun car but too many issues. Cooling, Timing, Electronics, suspension, etc. Too many plastic components.
I used to have an 03 LSE with a 5 speed. Was really cool
I had 2003 v8 I had a lot of sports cars luxury cars that ls too me was so special to me it has 50/50 weight distribution it has a beautiful V8 sound it was a sleeper but they have a transmission problem I been looking for another one

I own an '02 Thunderbird, nearly identical inside to this car. The small center storage is the exact size to hold 6 cd jewel boxes with spines facing upward, while the discs are in your 6-cd changer in the dashboard. Nobody reviewing this car seems to understand this decision!

the LS replaced The Continental Mark series after that was in production 53-61 and 1969-1998 first with the reintroduction of Mark III up To Mark VIII the best selling Gen was Mark IV with 280,000 which is similar to what the Toyota Camry sold in 1990 alone though if Lincoln bought that series back as a Hybrid starting price would be about $56,000 which is a price jump of more than 30% over a fully loaded Camry XSE V6 which is roughly $43,000 when everything is considered My uncle had a Mark VII designer series when I was a young girl loved that car Champaign Beige and cream two tone exterior with Cream interior and white partial landau roof over the back seat
If you want that car to launch, or at least something approaching a launch... you have to disable ATC and throw it in D4 NOT D5. D5 is the gearing which starts it in 2nd gear for MPG.
