Why this movie is worth an Oscar: Thomas Wake: Yer fond of me lobster aint' ye? I seen it - yer fond of me lobster! Say it! Say it. Say it! Ephraim Winslow: I don't have to say nothin'. Thomas Wake: Damn ye! Let Neptune strike ye dead Winslow! HAAARK! Thomas Wake: Hark Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til' ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more - only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin' tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye - a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself - forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea! Ephraim Winslow: Alright, have it your way. I like your cookin'.

Honestly Adam Driver isn't that great of an actor. You can see his shortcomings and somewhat stiffness in Martin Scorsese's Silence. There, Andrew Garfield completely outshines Driver in every scene they're together. You can see the natural talent and charisma that Garfield brings into every scene as opposed to Driver's dullness.

@SquidBag It's a meme format, it's not that serious. I admit it gets annoying time to time, but it's a popular way to tell jokes now.
@0Fyrebrand0
4 жыл бұрын
@SquidBag Mostly because it's a popular meme format, but I have to admit it is quite versatile and effective when used properly. In OP's comment, they never state their own personal feelings or reaction to Stuckmann's video -- rather, it is implied through context clues. This makes it a much more interesting and amusing read than if they'd simply stated their excitement as a matter of fact. Another good use of the format is when you start off with the first speaker saying nothing at all, or even have that first speaker be as vague as "The Internet" or "Everyone." The speaker that follows, no matter what they say, is made to appear unjustified in their assertion, or irrationally provoked, due to the lack of any context. It's sort of a "No one asked" situation. Then there's the classic set-up where somebody says or does a thing, followed by the second speaker saying "Hold my beer." This indicates they did something more extreme than the first speaker. Whether or not that thing is good or bad, is left up to the context of the situation. I hope you enjoyed tonight's episode of _Memes and Themes._ Please join us next week, when we'll be taking a deep dive into the "Thanos Snap," and don't miss our sobering docu-drama "Keyboard Cat: The Day the Music Died."

Robert Eggers is originally from the town next to where I grew up, so seeing his influences through coastal new england and new england colonial history gives his movies so much more depth. Seeing the houses from the 17th and 18th centuries that helped him to come up with these settings and characters is really cool, and I feel extremely connected to this movie in particular. It's like a memory from when you're a little kid and maybe sometimes you dream about it, but it mainly stays in your subconscious. It hits that deep for me.
I’m glad that a film like The Lighthouse is capable of being made in 2019. Horror films that actually demand some level of thought from viewers are depressingly in short supply these days. I’m happy that this film can exist and be great.

@@richardlugali2690 The Irishman is incredible; easily an A+ film for me.
I was upset that this movie didn’t get that many Oscar nominations. Both Pattinson and Dafoe give great performances and both deserved Oscar nominations, especially Pattinson who I think gave one of the best performances of the year.
Willem Dafoe creeped me out in this role in a way that I never experienced before. He seemed otherworldly at times.
HE HAS GIVEN THE ALMIGHTY A+... How long has have we been on this rock (with no A+)? Five weeks? Two days? Help me to recollect. Ps, I agree, the movie rocks.

Hot take. Wake is Winslow. After the painting accident, i think the real Winslow died. I mean, the day after Winslow didnt have a scratch on him. I think Wake left Winslow for dead (getting picked at by seagulls in the end) and created another Winslow in his mind. After the incident Winslow started drinking. He started to rebel more, ultimately became more like Wake every day. Maybe the murder of Winslows boss, inferred to the man Wake had killed and he could finally admit it to himself. You find Winslow sleeping in Wakes bunk. And ofcourse, Winslow starts calling himself Thomas. In the end, Winslow killing Wake, was just Wake killing the last bit of his sanity. Just some food for thought.

*"Long and hard is the path that leads out of darkness and into the light"* One way this film can be seen in that Thomas is on the island to pay penance for his sins through physical and mental hard work like they did in medieval times. Wake is like a guardian angel that's there to guide him. You'll notice after lots of hard work Wake tells him that he likes him and he'll be able to work the light soon but upon Thomas asking why he hasn't worked the light yet, Wake pushed back because he's not yet ready. When Thomas moans about the lobster, Wake sees it as a sign he's not grateful for being sustained through his penance and says the curse as a way of preaching damnation of hell if he keeps on focusing on worldly desires (steak) instead of why he's there. Then comes the confessional, as a part of repenting Thomas opens up and confesses his murder, but Wake responds with "why yer spill yer beans" in the theological sense of asking him is he confessing out of attrition. We hear a spooky echo of Wake saying why yer spill yer beans almost like you'd hear a gregorian chant in a empty cathedral. If we imagine Thomas is hearing this in his head then it truly means he's wrestling with his sin, between good and evil...Am I bad person or a good person? Did I make a mistake and can move on with my life or is it in my nature to be a murderer and I'm damned? Thomas tries to flee the Island, Wake drags him back because as his guardian angel he doesn't want him to fail. He then asks Thomas to remember how many days he's been on the Island, to remember why he's there, to purge his soul of sin but Thomas demands the secret of heaven without first paying his penance in full. Thomas also wrestles with the sin of fornication, throughout the film the mermaid is the object of his sexual desires and he's scared of it, when he is playing with himself in the shed he keeps on getting flashes of Wake in his mind which shows he's struggling with lust and he knows it, theres a point where he comes out of the shed after finishing and Wake is looking down on his from the tower as a sign that he's the one next to heaven and Thomas is down in the gutters of sin. Thomas asks Wake if he feels shame when he sleeps with women, to which wake replies he feels no shame because angels of God by definition are morally perfect. Again, if wake tells stories of sleeping with women it doesn't mean he's done it, he's just guiding him through penance by focusing his mind on certain aspects of his being. Thomas also tries to kiss his angel but fights back against it with violence, this pleases Wake, there may still be hope left. Thomas finds Wakes log book in which he is faced with his sins and his shirk of penance. Instead of accepting he's on the path of falling short of god and is determined to short his life out on the island, he rebels against the angel. Towards the end of the film it comes to a climax where Wake confronts Thomas with everything that's built up and happened throughout the film about his sins and his diabolical attitude towards redeeming his souls, Thomas can not handle it and beats up his guardian angel. His final act is to kill his angel which proves he is now beyond redeeming and can not be saved, when he gets to the light he is rejected at the gates of heaven and cast down to hell where he will be tortured in hell fire, the seagulls represents demons doing the devils work and the ocean is the lava of hell. *Long and hard is the path that leads out of darkness and into the light* In my opinion the film is about falling short of God's standard and shows us that hell is waiting.
