We danced in the night... Oh how we froliced in the cold moonlight... That was before them laws banning over 16 hour shifts at the day care center. The children were entranced with our monologues in the early hours of the second day of the shift.. I can still see their eyes, glistening, hanging on to my slurred words. After seeing this scene for the first time I wondered why dafoe reacted to winslow the way he did, after he slapped him. Then I looked more closely at pattinson's shadow. Huge, pitch black, and stretching high above both of them, to the roof. The angle of the roof makes it look like the shadows head is cocked, in either a mad or violent pose. It's like a characterization of winslow's inner rage, and his capacity to commit violence. And dafoe recognized that, perhaps in that moment he knew he would die by winslow's hand?

  • @Spongebrain97

I dont think it was really meant to symbolize anything but to look erie. I do love how atmospheric that scene is. After getting slapped Pattinson stands there silently with his fists balled up. Dafoe in order to ease tension says to make coffee because it would be a long night for them. Then cut to a wide shot in the cold and dark room. I love it.

dafoe's reaction does seem like he is fearing for his life. im not convinced it's patinsons shadow specifically, but it certainly adds atmosphere. it might just be his recognition of patinson as an adversary that will not listen to him, and what that will entail.

The most popular take is that both Thomas Wake and the lighthouse are a part of Winslows purgatory. He killed a man and therefore is in purgatory, maybe he had the ability to repent himself but ultimately he killed the seagull which proved he was not worthy and led to everything that happened right up until the ending. Winslow reaches for the light, for God if you will, but gets thrown down the staircase. All the way to hell and is left there to suffer permanently (getting his guts pecked by the gulls). Of course it's just an interpretation, but to me it's the coolest one.

Good take on the film, I think William Defoe's character is fearful of anyone killing the seabirds as he is convinced they are dead sailors reincarnated, unusual for reincarnation as a human can ever only reincarnate as another human, according to most intrepretations. This could tie into your take of him being dead and in Purgatory as well, The mermaid could also be an existent entity in the film.

After Wake slaps him, Winslow's shadow looms in a way that resembles several amazing things. The center of the shadow grows markedly darker, due to the brilliant contrast techniques they used, and the shadow suddenly resembles a massive pupil (like a giant squid or whale's) and the sight you are met with when you are underwater, at night, looking downward into deep water. If you've ever experienced either of these firsthand, as Wake likely had during some stormy journey, you might also be struck by primal, lip-quivering fear. No air to breathe. Nothing to grab on to. Nothing to feel but fear, cold, and pain. The great unknown, given shape. You open your eyes and try to discern where the surface might be, saltwater be damned, and you see nothing but pitched darkness. A flash of lightning illuminates the night sky for a brief second, and suddenly you're not alone, as an eyeball the size of your vision invites your brain to start reeling in sheer panic. "Pay me no mind..." prayed Thomas Wake, averting his eyes. When he struck Winslow, Wake slipped. He went overboard. Not just figuratively, but metaphorically. Wake went overboard, suddenly plunging into the deep end of Winslow's past. He realizes he's bitten off more than he can chew as Winslow's shadow becomes the only thing he fears, the seemingly bottomless abyss of the sea. He reflexively begins to gasp for air as his throat becomes numb, food tumbling out of his mouth like precious air bubbles would if he were drowning. "If you gaze upon the abyss, the abyss gazes upon you." ~ F. Nietzsche

Something I love about this scene after Wake slaps Thomas ,you can see Thomas's ready to slug him , Wake realises he's pushed the wrong button's and gives ah "Oh Crap" look. He's visibly terrified of this young man he initially thought was a push over . He then weakly tries to diffuse the situation by asking Thomas to make them coffee because they've got a long night ahead of them. The added touch of him trying to eat yet it sloppily dropping out of his mouth as he's clearly uneasy and panicking is a nice touch by Willem Dafoe . It's a cross between him being too scared to square up to Thomas and stick by his guns, and being too macho to apologise out loud.

Also note the reaction shot of Winslow at 3:23 and how it focuses on his shadow. If you look closely, Winslow's stance does not match up with his shadows, the latter having a much more deranged and unnatural pose with crooked shoulders and a torqued neck. This may be part of the reason that Wake becomes so intimidated.

At the same Independent Spirit Awards show that Willem Defoe got best male support, Adam Sandler summed it up best in his speech for winning best male lead: "A few weeks back when I was quote-unquote snubbed by the Academy, it reminded me when I briefly attended high school and was overlooked for the coveted yearbook superlative category 'Best Looking.' That accolade was given to a jean-jacket-wearing feathered hair douchebag by the name of Skipper Jenkins. But my classmates did honor me with the allegedly less prestigious designation of 'Best Personality.' And tonight as I look around this room I realize the Independent Spirit Awards are the best personality awards of Hollywood. So then let all those feather-haired douchebag motherfuckers get their Oscars tomorrow night. Their handsome good looks will fade in time, while our independent personalities will shine on forever!"
