Very interesting. Did some ancestry research (since we are on the Covid stay-at-home order). Found out Martha is my husbands 3rd cousin. Guess we'll need to visit Mount Vernon some day :)

wait what? doesn't that mean your husband would need to be in the same generation as martha? A third cousin is a person who's in the same generation and shares the same great-great-grandparent as you.

Really? I just found out that Martha was my 8 great Aunt, her sister Anna Moles was my 8th great grandmother

Martha Washington was never referred to as First Lady. She was called Lady Washington during George’s presidency. The first person to have been referred to as "first lady" on a regular basis during their time in the position was Harriet Lane, who was actually James Buchanan's niece.

@George Washington’s Mount Vernon I understand from my readings of Martha Washington that she was a shrewd businesswoman, more so than George, and that she objected to George wanting to free his slaves following his death and insisted that occur only following her death. While President Washington had some moral qualms re slavery, Martha had absolutely none and accepted slavery as the natural order of things. Is that accurate?

There is some thing about Martha Washington that rubs me the wrong way. Funny because I don't usually feel that way toward historical figures but she seems to me to have been less caring about the slaves than George was. I think self-centered and demanding is what I hear in the stories about her.

I think that's probably a fair assessment. But then it's also important to remember that, like George.. she was a woman of her time and class. I think she did the best she could with the information and education she was given. One can't deny her dedication to the soldiers during the revolutionary war.
