Same here but I was 13. I still have a vivid memory of my friend coming up the stairs in my house and it was the first thing we said to each other. That Kurt was dead. A lot of my memories of that time have faded away the older I get but that one has always stuck with me.

My parents & sisters were out of town & I was home alone. My Mom kept calling me up & checking on me b/c she thought I was going to hurt myself somehow.

I was 9 and this was my mother's first discussion with me about death, as at that point I'd never attended a funeral. Even as a kid the memory is firmly locked in. Come home from school to The Charlotte Observer spread out on the kitchen table, her crying her eyes out, explaining to me that my favorite band wasn't going to be making music anymore. I was 9, so the concept didn't grab me with the same power, mostly as she was in the throws of a crying spell, but the look of defeat in her eyes is something I can still conjure up. I knew Nirvana as the cassette tapes I got every Christmas since the release of Nevermind, which ended that afternoon on April 9th (that's when the paper released the story), but her in her mid twenties knew Nirvana on a deeper level. I couldn't imagine the world's loss on that level. Staley and Cornell as well as Wieland (Weiland?) and Chester gave me shock, but I guess in this age the stories tend to fade at a higher rate. Cobain's death seems to still loom over two decades later.

Tom Petty said in an interview that Nirvana was the most significant thing to happen to music since the Beatles...so I agree with the John Lennon statement. The Beatles and Nirvana were the two musical acts that literally flipped the industry on its head and changed everything in the blink of an eye. There is a very close connection with what both bands experienced when they broke into the mainstream.

I heard about Kurt's passing in a cramped hotel room in Germany with 14 other classmates, watching MTV News - Europe, there for a 3-week trip around Germany. We were all blown away in shock. I don't think ANYONE knew the kind of pain Kurt was in (both physically with his spine troubles/drug abuse and mentally). We listened to his music on the last few bus rides we had together before heading home. Even in death, Kurt's music helped bring a group of 15 individuals together as one. Thankful for the music and the memories he left with us all. RIP Kurt.

A familiar story with me- I was in Paris for a 6 day school trip with my class. First time away from home (Ireland). It was a Friday night, Ill never forget my friend- also a huge fan- opening the door of his hotel room, and telling me in the hallway that Kurt had died. I went into my own room, switched on MTV , and there it was. Ray Cokes of MTV Europe's "Most Wanted" confirmed the news that my 14 year old self could'nt otherwise comprehend. Sure, I had loved and attached myself to music all my life, but Kurt was and still is something else. Nobody I had admired like that had died before in my lifetime at that point, and at that age,its such a weird feeling- trying to process something like that, especially when you are distracted from normal life- by being away from home and family with yer best friends on holiday like that. I remember my close friends with me in somebody elses hotel room trying to understand what had just happened, and why. I was distracted for the rest of the trip by the sights and sounds of Paris, but when I got home and for the weeks after that as more coverage, tributes and magazines printed and showed the news more and more, it really hit me. I cant believe that, near to the day (we all found out on April 8th) 25 years on, here we are now, talking about that night online like this.

@@simonspoke It was indeed at night when we got the news as it was all unfolding over in America some hours behind us. I remember Ray Cokes ending the "Most Wanted" episode with a recap on what happened, before ending the show with the Come as you Are video. The Kurt Loader US MTV news we see here was'nt playing on MTV Europe. What happened was, little segments of MTV Europe's own news was updating us on things every 15 mins or so. Lisa I' Anson (?) was reporting the still raw and happening story every now and again that nite. I was in my friends Hotel Room watching that , tryin to wonder why and what had happened. Actually mate, some of that Most Wanted episode is on YT to see. If ya key in "Mtv Most Wanted April 94", or somethin like that, it should take you to it. The news bullitins from MTV Europe are here to see aswell. 👍👍

@@simonspoke I can only imagine how it must have been hearing the horrible news when yer mind was already in a nicely Altered State like that!🤘🤘 It is amazing how, seeing footage like the Most Wanted episode, or the MTV News footage can transport you back to those memories and moments. I was on a school trip to Paris. Twas my second nite there when I learned the news. It was a bizarre mix of the shock of that, and the euphoria of being on holidays , that it didnt really settle in that he had died. A few days later when I got home again and more details had emerged, along with the MTV Coverage of the memorial tribute they had in Seattle when it really hit me.

This show as it's depicted here was a bit before my time (born in '95), but it's so fascinating to me, as a music nerd, that there used to be a music-related news show where they would actually delve into news related to the music and the artists' craft. Most shows that talk about musicians only talk about the celebrity aspect, who they're dating, what car they drive, how big their house is, etc.

I was grounded from watching MTV when this happened because I got busted cutting class and my grades were godawful. My mom knew how important this was for my generation and allowed me to binge watch MTV all weekend after learning of his death. She was right. This was a definitive moment for kids in the 90’s.

Pantera on Cobain's death in MTV interview. Phil Anselmo: What he did should not be judged by anyone on the planet. Vinnie Paul: Nobody knows what he went through and what his life was all about. Phil: It's only been 3 days now and people are saying "Oh what a selfish guy, he left behind a wife and kid." How can you say that? Nirvana put out a record that did nothing, then the next record exploded. We don't sell 1/3rd, 1/6th, 1/10th the records they sell and I don't like the pressure that I have and I know he *points to Vinnie Paul* doesn't like the pressure that he has. Think of the pressure dude had. Henry Rollins MTV interview Rollins: "I think maybe in a situation where people want a piece of you where you're being pursued by tabloid newspapers to be in these weird situations might drive one to extremes. When that around you is so excessive; the money, the attention, the hype, the hysteria all of that perhaps something in your own life might rise to the occasion. Also a lot of people are brilliant yet sensitive and perhaps they're not ready for the brutality of mass acceptance and I think that's the word that describes it best; brutal."

Both guys in the vid are super aware and intelligent bout music, rock, and Kurt.. I agree when he said This was a MAJOR MAJOR LOST , not jus some rockstar who blew his brains out becuz he couldn’t handle success. I’m Generation Z so I didn’t witness Kurt n the whole nirvana wave BUT my generation is truly affected by this. You could see it with today’s kids and the kids of my generation that something was lacking! We didn’t have a “leader” if u wanna call it that. My generation and this generation desperately needed PAC & KURT.. Two genuine people who wouldn’t sell out or sugar code anything. Two guys who meant what they said, open, honest, REAL, TRUE TO SELF. Guys you couldn’t jus throw money at and they would shut up. Both those deaths really hurt two generation of kids tbh. It’s so obvious that those two amazing artists are the missing pieces of my generation & this current generation. Tragic

The music industry in the 2000s and 2010s would of been so much better if kurt had lived and continued to make music. It was a huge loss. I didnt even know of him when he was alive i just remember knowing nirvana was a big rock band because someone had scrawled nirvana and metallica on a wall in my local hall. I was 7 when he died and the music indusry sucked in my teens and early twenties with all the sugar coated fake ass pop groups so his loss was felt in later generations also. Rock music suffered a terrible terrible loss. Its still upsetting to this day. Thank god for some good dance tracks and a few good hip hop songs.
