The Life Changing Benefits of Quitting Social Media For 1 Year

How quitting social media for 1 year changed my life. I think we have all found ourselves scrolling through social media endlessly and having a very difficult tie breaking free. We all create reasons on why we MUST have social media.
It was not until I had a traumatic event in my life did I realize life is short. The average human life span is 76 years. Out of that 6 years is spent on social media, while only 1 year is spent actually socializing. Quitting social media changed my life. In this video I will share the lessons I learned from cutting social media out of my life.
I learned that time is precious. A task must EARN us to spend our time on it.
I learned to love myself. We are all unique and beautiful in our own way.
I learned who cares what anyone else thinks. No ones opinions matter other than your own.
Please let me know what you have learned during your breaks from social media, or if there is something I can do to help you with your journey.

I quit social media four years ago, I feel less distracted, less worry, less fear, less doubt or insecurity, I feel more at peace. also people post about everything under the sun and that leads to information overload. I'd rather make connections and have relations in real life. Getting away from it all was the best choice of my life and still is.

I felt like social media kept me stuck in time with being connected to people from several chapters of my life. It was nice at first, but I never saw these people in person. Most were virtual. And then political opinions and arguments would poison the feed. Or negative news stories. Always something in the world to be enraged about. I heard a word recently that described it perfectly. Catastrophizing. I deleted my Facebook just about 1 year ago & and dont miss it. My current friends can text and call me, the ones I havent seen in years or decades can stay in the past.

I can heavily relate to the part about being stuck in time with people you've met but you don't really know them anymore. We meet so many people throughout our life's journey and not all of them are meant to be permanent; in fact, MOST of them are temporary. The natural ebb and flow of life is about allowing that ebb and flow to happen. Social media has essentially become an online database that consists mostly of people we've met that likely should've naturally cycled out of our lives by now... but there's the "drama" behind it that Damon mentioned in his video - the "I can't unfollow or unfriend them because then they'll think I hate them" rule which is silly. I am so glad I came across this video; this has been extremely helpful in sealing the deal for me deleting my accounts again for good.

I have been reading stuff, and watching videos since 1998. I never got this attached to anything, because they don't stay around for long. I value my time. I only get online for doing research, and educational purposes only. Anything else is not worth it. I'm a music composer, and an artist. My mind is very important to me. It wants to learn new things. Everything else is not that interesting. I'm constantly thinking of my future, and what I want to do next. It's time well spent.

It’s been 2 years since I left social media. I have no regrets at all. I got sick of people gossiping, drama, negativity & people faking their lives & friendships and sharing everything that should be kept private or craving attention with provocative pictures & selfies. A number of things I realised: 1. People who added me as “Friends” didn’t really care about me. They were “So called Friends” it was just to increase their friends list. 2. When people were going through their hardest times of anxiety, trauma and upset, I went out of my way & made an effort by helping & supporting them. But when I was going through my hardest times, including anxiety, trauma and stress. The people who I helped & supported never reached out to me to help or supported me even when I struggled. Everything has become one sided. 3. Certain posts or videos get blown out of proportion or completely taken out of context even if it’s nothing negative. 4. People lie about the amount of friends they REALLY have. Who in the REAL world has 100s or 1000s of friends WHO?? 5. Communication is very one sided. The same person had to make the first move to start a conversation as the other person doesn’t make an effort themselves or just can’t be bothered. 6. People lie about their lives, they only show the positive side of theirs lives which doesn’t show the REAL truth about the person. You can’t tell and don’t see if someone is REALLY depressed, upset, isolated, lonely, feeling suicidal or what’s actually going on in their actual lives. Even if people post how they really feel, people don’t always care or not interested. 7. It makes people fake and insecure. It’s not just school kids or teenagers in schools, colleges, universities or workplaces doing it, but grown adults as well are also being fake & insecure, especially managers. 8. People compare themselves to others just to get loads of “Likes” & comments. 9. Social media has increased loneliness, isolation, anxiety and depression which can be severe. 10. Due to social media and the increase in technology, it’s causing destruction & destroying peoples lives in the sense of their is no sense of unity, community, love and nobody wants to help each other. If they see someone doing something constructive and productive and they’re doing well in a community or society, people will laugh at them in an act of ignorance, and cannot wait for them to fall down. Social media is dividing people, not bringing people together. 11. Having a proper conversation or being real is considered not normal and people think it’s creepy. People don’t like having real conversations. 12. It’s made people to be narcissists, entitlement, ignorant, prejudice and bullies. 13. People can say things or make comments that are abusive, racist, sexist, ignorant, prejudice, misogynist, homophobia, xenophobia, discrimination openly online, rather than to your face. 14. I have seen Boys & Girls take provocative, selfies / pictures just to get attention from so called friends / strangers, sometimes in a negative way, for example, woman having their boobs / chests hanging out, body image, men & women showing off muscles, six pack & more. 15. With social media & the young generation with regards to friendships, people feel that if they add someone as friend request and they accept it, or meet someone & they click with them they automatically think that’s “friends for life” people need to realise that’s not how friendship REALLY works. Friendships are & should always be a 2-way street. Real friendships would make the effort to support & be there for each other through the good times, fun times, hard times, sad times, upsetting times & more. Communication & making an effort should be equal on both sides. Not the same person who always makes first contact. The other person should also make an effort too. We need to ALL learn the skill set of when we suffer from stress, anxiety, trauma, facing problems & more, that we should reach out to our friends, family or professionals for help & support, NOT turn to social media. 16. Our young generation has grown up addicted. They have been addicted to mobile phones, alcohol, drugs, social media & more at a young age It’s very sad. We are seeing the negative impact of what social media is doing, but we are not really reacting to it. I never had TikTok, Twitter or Instagram. Glad I didn’t sign up to any of them. Facebook was the only social media platform I had and it was recommended to me back when I was in my teens. I only use KZread as I can look at interesting things like cooking recipes and motivation videos and music videos of festivals & concerts and more fun stuff. I enjoy going out in nature walks, bowling listening to music and learning new hobbies and watching movies. Since leaving it’s been the best decision of my life. I enjoy life more, I can now enjoy doing the things I do or want to try without being judged or told what to do without being made to feel guilty. I feel more happier and a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I think if social media disappeared forever, I can guarantee people will spend REAL quality time with friends and family. People will know who their REAL friends are and that they will do things together and have a good time doing it. I also feel that people will have proper conversations and listen and engage. I do feel sorry for our young generation. The young generation is lost. There is so much talent and ideas in young people and they need to show that in a positive & constructive way. We can make change for the future. The young generation needs real positive role models to look up to, for them to succeed in life & beyond.

This is a sad, harsh truth.. it's been my experience as well. When I've deleted or deactivated my accounts in the past, it'd take months for even my closest friends to realize it... and most of the time it was for silly reasons like they went to send me a funny or "cool" video (which is likely also a waste of time) or even worse - because they realized I wasn't "liking" or "commenting" on their posts and they were bothered by it... hahaha.

I wake up early now. I'm 31 and have been a social media addict since my space days . Makes me sick to think about . There was alot of FOMO the 1st week and a half then I realised my real friends text and call me the, fake friends online that I see on real life once in a while dont matter 😂 also feels good to not share my private moments online anymore. More mystery and privacy and better conversations when I see people because they havent already seen it online .

Amazing amazing video with different perspective🙌 what you said is so true especially that we don't wanna share everything with strangers and that we appreciate the journey of people when we don't see just the highlight moments of them and we embrace individualism. Also that so many dramas are prevented when not using social media... I also was on-off social media from past one year but I'd always get back because app timers and uninstalling aint affective till you have will power.. But few days ago I straight up deleted all my accounts on all social media except KZread and I feel so happy (although I'm ready to face the lonely phase that would eventually come and go). I'm literally getting 3-4 hours more in my day to do things that matter :)

I had a pretty big body of work I had built up with my socials that was also helping me make passive income but all of it came with a huge price with having borderline personality disorder. Thank you for this video and your insight. I’ve toggled back and forth with social media but at the end of the day I do admit it does little positive in my life. Instagram can track for you how many hours you spend on it and I was shocked at the time I waste. It truly becomes an addiction and a source for validation. I’m 52( F), and I’ve certainly been able to live a full life before social media existed so it makes me feel sort of weak that I rely on it and feel insecure about letting it go completely. Funny thing, I never go on KZread when I’m eating my breakfast but for some reason this morning I did. Your video came up as a suggestion on my home page. It was meant to be. Time for me to do a lot more navel gazing and focusing on what’s truly in my heart. It sounds dramatic, lol, but I’m so gripped by trauma and anxiety that I think what I need is freedom. Keep telling us about your journey and thanks again.

It would be fun if people who went through this could share their experience. And actually searching for online friends, who would also share the same idea. But it kinda makes no sense, because the whole point is about not using social media cos of how toxic/addicting and useless it is, if you use it wrong. But also it cuts the ability to search for new friends abroad. Also not an easy thing to find people who share the same idea and that actually surround you

Maverick, thank you for sharing that with me. I experienced that very same thing. For me I had a huge realization when I was at a grocery story that has a restaurant inside here in Austin Texas. I was so absent minded in my life dissociating through social media. While I was waiting for my food I looked over and saw this woman by herself no phone in sight drinking wine and smelled the flowers on the table. All the tables had flowers on them and I didn’t even notice because I was so lost in my own world. She looked so peaceful and happy. That single moment taught me that the moments in my life that have value are the small “insignificant” moments. That was over 2 years ago and I still think about it to this day. When I get lost in my own thoughts and want to lean back into social media to drown it out I remember the small moments that bring me joy that I miss if I was distracting myself. I feel for where you are currently, it’s very hard. I believe that you will strike the right balance. I know I didn’t answer your question but I hope that this example helps in some way🤍

I don't need to announce. I'm myself & I love that. I hate being basic, a part of the crowd & that is where social media was taking me. I wanted to wear what cool kids wear. I wanted to talk, walk, smile like they would. It was insane! I used to fantasise them. Now I'm like... a bunch of rats in the rat race. It opens your eyes. I wish more people would do it.

I think it was the first video that truly showed my authenticity while expressing that quitting social media is hard and it’s not a walk in the park. Always free to chat!! Having people to talk with about this is huge, I really try to soak in as much as I possibly can! Thank you for reaching out

I no longer have no adictions to any social media but KZread. Gotta figure out how to beat it, but I know its hard because honestly its so easy to spend tons of time on It. But at the same time if its used properly it can be so useful in my life

It is interesting how all other social media for me personally feels very addicting and negative in my life. I feel as I have found the right balance with KZread tho. I feel it’s very informative and I don’t fall victim to it becoming negative in my life. I am not sure what separates KZread from the other forms of media. I feel if I can discover that difference it can lead me to using all other medias with the positive aspects of it

Social media is worst. As someone who is advertising big loads of money for few companies. I can tell you. They know everything about you what you buy, when you wake up, how you feel, what you buy, what you read, who are you in love, job, income, city, zip code and much much more. if you want to leave. It will be hard. Thats why they are making billions a year!

@@DamonCassidy what's shocking that parents give cellhpones to kids. They get hooked / addicted to it when they are young. Next generations will have mayor focus and social problems. It's already happening. Schools don't teach how dangerous internet / social media is but who would teach? Most teachers don't know what's behind website. You don't see it. You see someone smoking cigratette for example and you understand its bad. But social media is different. Everyone can "smoke it" wjeb they are kids. Lets get them addicted "first hit is free" hehe here first hit is free is free registration for all the data you give them. Long story short it would be much better if we make 18+ social media sites, but then they lose billions.

The false sense of self was the part that drove me to delete it, & I couldn't focus on studying. I don't want to go back anymore because now I know it's all fake. If I want to keep in touch with someone I would want it to be more authentic & true. I don't want to misjudge or be mistaken or at best manipulated by a certain image. It is crazy the way social media bewitches you. Trash medium, literally. KZread is the least toxic social media (minus the shorts)

I fully decided to quit social media some years ago for a 90-day period, and I ended up wanting to do more things outside of my phone with my girlfriend (who also took on the challenge), with my sister, with my mom and dad and my friends, just because now I had the time to participate in life outside my mobile device. I’ve been wanting to do it again, but it’s not easy at the beginning.

The beginning is hard. I tried it multiple times before I was finally able to quit. I decided to say it will happen when it is supposed to, and that took the pressure off to make it happen. Right after I made that decision I quit social media, it was still difficult but strangely I felt more confident that time. Good luck when you take another break from it! Let me know how it goes.

My thing is. People we knew in high school if they were meant to be in our future than they wouldn’t had lost contact with us years ago. Wasn’t that the original purpose of social media reconnecting old friends, not trying to be a mini celebrity.

I agree in a way. I do find myself spending a lot of time on KZread as well, but personally never found it defeating or something I couldn’t step away from. I have found that the separation comes from the creators. The genuineness that can come through a video is hard to replicate. I search for select things that will help me grow as a person instead of consistent images or texts that really have nothing to do with me.

I've gotten rid of every social media app except KZread which I use for hours, but for me there are more pros than cons on KZread, hence you can find more valuable content imo. Still it's the most hardest to get rid of for me.
